The fact is that party leaders and senior member of Congress wield immense influence and power, and the leadership of both parties love government power. They each favor different aspects of govt power and control, but they are usually equally destructive of the rights of the individual as granted by the nature of his or her being. However, there are members of both parties who are exceptions, but they are in the minority.
But occasionally some politician recalls that he's there because people voted him in.

@ddgallion Just wondering...What happened to the "sunset clause"? It was attatched to the Patriot Act and this provision is normally not used at all. Wasn't the Act meant to help us thru the crisis and then the sunset allow it to be repealed? It should be repealed then. That would be staying true to the whole purpose and intent of it all.That is ...If they ever intended to in the first place.

Congressman Dick Armey was a primary author and advocate of these sunset provisions. The provisions were renewed in 2006 and expired in 2009 or will need to be renewed again sometime in 2010. At least that is my understanding, which is clearly incomplete.

@hoboboxerjoe, the original bill had only one opposing vote in the Senate. The continuing legislation which reauthorizes elements that were scheduled to sunset also passed both the House and Senate. This is not to say some people in both parties have not opposed the legislation, they have. But all this legislation would never have moved through Congress and been passed if it did not have support from both parties. Staunch opposition has been very limited.

In a Constitutional Republic no amount of convincing or discussion is acceptable to violate the highest law in the land. In a democracy a majority can and often does violate the minority's wishes and rights, however, the Constitution and Bill of Rights are their to protect anyone that does not agree with the majority because it has the force of Law. We were never established as a democracy and I may very well be the minority the founders had in mind that the documents protect.

The fear FAA had of the people they make rules to regulate who get on planes to travel is what allowed 911 to happen. Even if 911 was a inside job(false flag) the passengers on all those flights, could have stopped it . The pilots could have stopped it. The stewardesses or stewards could have stopped it. The copilot could have stopped it . They were all required to fly without any arms. They could not possess stun guns, knives, pistols, even pepper spray was not allowed. Resisting not allowed.

The fact is that party leaders and senior member of Congress wield immense influence and power, and the leadership of both parties love government power. They each favor different aspects of govt power and control, but they are usually equally destructive of the rights of the individual as granted by the nature of his or her being. However, there are members of both parties who are exceptions, but they are in the minority.

Wasn't the Act meant to help us thru the crisis and then the sunset allow it to be repealed? It should be repealed then. That would be staying true to the whole purpose and intent of it all.That is ...If they ever intended to in the first place.

@imaginarythings The sunset provisions of the Patriot Act only impact a few powers granted by the act, particularly those governing searches and the interception of communications. Congressman Dick Armey was a primary author and advocate of these sunset provisions. The provisions were renewed in 2006 and expired in 2009 or will need to be renewed again sometime in 2010. At least that is my understanding, which is clearly incomplete.

@hoboboxerjoe, the original bill had only one opposing vote in the Senate. The continuing legislation which reauthorizes elements that were scheduled to sunset also passed both the House and Senate. This is not to say some people in both parties have not opposed the legislation, they have. But all this legislation would never have moved through Congress and been passed if it did not have support from both parties. Staunch opposition has been very limited.
