And you're right, there are 2 Robotniks, the nemesis from all games called Ivo and the grandfather who created Shadow, whose name is Gerald Robotnik.

Robotnik came first as the US version was released a month early, but Eggman was the Japanese name, and since Sonic's a Japanese game... well, if you're gonna label one or the other "true" - it's Eggman.

There are some parts in the Sonic franchise that are entertaining to kids or adults and that includes this game as well. I've been playing the series since I was a kid and since the Sonic franchise started and grew up playing it. I grew up knowing the villain as Robotnik, it should have remained.

@puppygal56 Try the new game that just came out. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1. This game is just like playing the very first Sonic the Hedgehog game, but with different levels and more features. It's only a $15 download for Wiiware, PS3, 360, and iPhone.
Also, if you really want a fun Sonic game, get Sonic Mega Collection for Gamecube or Sonic Mega Collection + for PS2 or XBOX. It's a collection of the classic Sonic games. If you have a PS3 or 360, try Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.
@puppygal56 This one is fun! But, get this. This one isn't the greatest though. I had quite a blast playing this game. Lots of fun! But, I was playing it so much, I got through the game way too quickly and beat it in the first two days I bought it. I recommend just renting it to see what it's like. After I beat the game, I barely ever played it again. But, maybe things will be different for you, there are a lot of other games I play more.
@puppygal56 You should also know that the Wii version is different from the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.
Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
The Wii has a steadier difficulty and more tolerable werehog stages but its short on some content and the hedgehog stages are not as fun.
The Xbox360 and PS3 versions have better hedgehog stages, better graphics, and cool little bonuses but it gets really hard really fast, you need to go medal hunting, and the werehog stages are extremely annoying.

@Justas923 Just because part of it was bad, doesn't mean it was a failure. It was a good step in the right direction. It showed Sega want the people wanted in a Sonic game, so Sonic Colors will have more of that. Its a victory, if anything else. A bittersweet one, but a victory nonetheless.
@blade10000 Good point. I never thought this game was bad even with the Werehog levels. The day time stages are amazing! And, it may come as a surprise, but when I went to Robotnik Land(Eggmanland, "sigh") I felt like as if I was playing old school Sonic. Simply the reason was had to do with the music and the difficulty of the level and the look of it and how much fun it was. Even though old school is 2D and Unleashed is 3D. The game is fun. It only lacked replay value for me.

@Shadow0X3 Okay. Yeah, he is no longer the voice actor. I agree. I like this one a lot. He was my favorite. Jason Griffith was Sonic's voice actor since 2005 I believe. Now it's someone new. I really don't think they needed to change his voice actor though. Griffith was just fine.

@puppygal56 Try the new game that just came out. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1. This game is just like playing the very first Sonic the Hedgehog game, but with different levels and more features. It's only a $15 download for Wiiware, PS3, 360, and iPhone.
Also, if you really want a fun Sonic game, get Sonic Mega Collection for Gamecube or Sonic Mega Collection + for PS2 or XBOX. It's a collection of the classic Sonic games. If you have a PS3 or 360, try Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection.

@puppygal56 This one is fun! But, get this. This one isn't the greatest though. I had quite a blast playing this game. Lots of fun! But, I was playing it so much, I got through the game way too quickly and beat it in the first two days I bought it. I recommend just renting it to see what it's like. After I beat the game, I barely ever played it again. But, maybe things will be different for you, there are a lot of other games I play more.

@puppygal56 You should also know that the Wii version is different from the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.
Both have their strengths and weaknesses.
The Wii has a steadier difficulty and more tolerable werehog stages but its short on some content and the hedgehog stages are not as fun.
The Xbox360 and PS3 versions have better hedgehog stages, better graphics, and cool little bonuses but it gets really hard really fast, you need to go medal hunting, and the werehog stages are extremely annoying.

@Roockie117 No it's not. Trust me. I know. Robotnik was his old name. That is the name he used to have in the classic Sega Genesis Sonic games. It wasn't until Sonic Adventure that they used his Japanese version name Eggman. Robotnik is his last name.
This guy is Eggman Robotnik and his grandfather is Gerald Robotnik. This guy used to go by his more cooler last name Robotnik. He did back in old Sonic games and in the cartoon shows back in the 90's.

The game was a failure. Sonics place is in 2D. But got to admit Intro is awesome. Robotnik looks awesome. Shame that there is no Death Egg. I hope in Sonic 4 there will be Death Egg

Now as for Sonic Unleashed, I thought it was a step in the right direction for the series. The day time stages are lots of fun and how a 3D Sonic game should be. Sonic Colors will incorporate that without Werehog

His name in all of those games, every single one of them is Dr. Robotnik. There was even a tetris game called Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

I'm sure that's who he meant in that series though. But, Dr. Eggman or Robotnik whichever you call it, his name is Eggman Robotnik. Pretty much they went from calling him by his last name to calling him by his first name. I'll always call him Robotnik though. That's what I grew up knowing him as and it sounds better than Eggman.

I've played Sonic since the very first game for the Sega Genesis(or Megadrive if you aren't from the US) and his name was Robotnik on there, well, except for the Japanese version where he did go by Eggman. They just brought it international now, but it's just a terrible name compared to Robotnik.

@garuga0777 According to Sega (and the general history of gaming), Eggman was his name in Japan and Robotnik was his name everywhere else. The two storylines merged in Sonic Adventure, and Eggman is now his alias with Robotnik being his last name. And the last time I checked, you usually share a last name with one of your grandfather's.

Back in 1991, the character was named Eggman in Japan, but for whatever reason they decided to give him a new name for Western audiences. Have you ever seen the logos in Wing Fortress Zone of Sonic the Hedgehog 2? It even says "Eggman" on the plane.

@Justas923 Just because part of it was bad, doesn't mean it was a failure. It was a good step in the right direction. It showed Sega want the people wanted in a Sonic game, so Sonic Colors will have more of that. Its a victory, if anything else. A bittersweet one, but a victory nonetheless.

@blade10000 Good point. I never thought this game was bad even with the Werehog levels. The day time stages are amazing! And, it may come as a surprise, but when I went to Robotnik Land(Eggmanland, "sigh") I felt like as if I was playing old school Sonic. Simply the reason was had to do with the music and the difficulty of the level and the look of it and how much fun it was. Even though old school is 2D and Unleashed is 3D. The game is fun. It only lacked replay value for me.
