I hear ya man .... and thanks for the support ... i appreciate that from an "original junglist " 92-98 ... you witnessed some amazing stuff then my friend ... I got into it around 96 ...
anyways ... not sure if you read any of my posts below but yeah it isn't a flawless mix ...it was actually not meant for the competition and wasn't rehearsed.. we also were loaded and hadn't slept yet lol .. we saw no one else was entering a DNB vid so we entered this not expecting anything and we one ..
i did, and.. "i could actively beatmatch and do seamless mixes". of course the mixing wouldn't be great, but that's something that just takes a little time to get a handle on it. spinning records is easy i haven't trainwrecked any genre i've tried in years and i pick up the tables once or twice a month maximum.
and when i say "any genre" i literally mean every practical genre that can be mashed with turntables.
i know exactly what i'm talking about, it's you who doesn't understand what you're saying.
"there's no dynamics to the set"
dynamics means pattern, gradation and variation of music and that set has variances and layers in spades.
stop telling people what to do. i'm sick of self important dj's trying to critique other people's shit and make what others' do seem like lesser accomplishments.
You wrote "Trying to put 'A' definition to a set". I said try to add more definition to what your doing within the set.
I spoke of dynamics in both the musical form and non-musical. What i reffered to means least of all 'patterns' and 'gradation'. And is not reffering to simply chopping and changing constantly.
As i write this im hearing clanging snares and about 3 tracks being played at once, which might seem wonderful to bedroom Dj's but musically and sonically it sounds like mud.
Plus theres no dynamics to the set. Its just a constant mixm with no breakdowns or build ups and ..oops another clang..
Im not trying to be disrespectful, just maybe trying to point some younger Dj's in the right direction, since i've got 16 years of experience. By the way i started out in Hardcore/Drum&Bass in 1992 !
and I agree clashing snares to me is the worst sound ever.... me (the guy farthest away) had little to no monitoring and we i couldn't hear what SEEK was playing in my headphones as we were using 2 mixers and didn't hook them up the best way ... this month we''l re-do one and make it to the best of our abilities .... And Donjuan does make a good point and I second it .. cause learning how to dj doesn't need to take very long ... and things not to do are key to pointing out ... big ups donjuan
Totally understandable. And i must say that being able to beatmatch perfectly all the time really isn't that important. I'll always remember Dj's like Grooverider were pretty poor at it to start with, but they made their name on track selecting alone !
But um think about your sets, because i like what you guys do, but try to ween off the idea that having a number of tracks going at the same time in a constant mix is a good thing.
Carl cox use to mix Drum and Bass with 4 decks but it didn't mean
He had them going constantly, it just meant he could make swifter transitions, and use different elements of different tracks.
Im just trying to give suggestions and concepts that may help to advance and polish the artform. It may not be applicable to modern drum+bass, but as a dj who is looking for crowd response, try to define intro's, breakdowns, build-ups, watch other big dj's from other genre's and see what the crowd responds to. Its usually the basic elements !
boys congrats on 1st place, in my ipoinion dj ravine and cotts should have been 1st closely followed by ourselves the bangbrothers, this may come accross as arrogant but thats my opinion
according to what was being judged we did it best. Our set always had at least 3 tracks playing at a time and at one point 5 ... every other entry had at least one point where one dj wasn't mixing. for eg. one guy mixing and the other only using a scratch record cutting.
And i think the fact that ours was off the cuff with no previous planning or practice .. compared others that did obvious multiple take's mix ... and we did ours at 8am on no sleep feeling pretty wobbly .. I think we did pretty good
noisia123 **sorry i hit remove instead of reply by accident
Well the guy on the cd decks is doing most of the work. The guy using vynl is doing very little ,and cant beat match well which really ruined the mix at points. The mix was pretty good but keeping those beats matched is essential, and guy in the back NEVER SLOW OR SPEED A RECORD WITHOUT HEADPHONES ON!! always keep an ear on and you can tell the second it starts to get loose
I would say the same thing for the entries playing house music :) but if you watch the mixer that is facing you the two channel in the middle are for the two silver cd spinners and channel 1 is for the black cd spinner his 3 deck ... what i'm playing is coming through the AUX on the vary far left ... which he adjusts throughout.......
So ... since this was completely off the cuff and our very first try spinning together we'll post another birds eye view in a different set up
also if you were more familiar with DNB you would know that it would not be possible for either myself or Seek to pull that mix with only one of us actually spinning due to the number of tracks playing at once.... Plus I think he would just record a solo mix and enter it in the single competition (which has a better prizes) rather than create an elaborate B2B Illusion with me only bobbing my head in the background.
Yea if you pay attention to who does what on the mixer you can tell both are plugged in. I saw when the guy in the front hands were off the mixer and the dude in the back faded from one turntable to another, great work btw.
i think good effort from both of u, if there were any small flaws it doesnt matter. just enjoy and keep playing!!!!

I like how, instead of a mix, it's like an ever-changing mosaic of music. Neat.

So i've got full support for you guys. Drum and Bass is the hardest thing to beatmatch well and fast.
PLus im from East London and have been part of the scene from '92 to '98, so im always happy to hear it going strong.
Just some things to think about in your sets.

@DonJuanDeMarco2
i disagree, drum and bass i found exceedingly easy to spin. probably the easiest for me at least.
everything depends on whether or not you have a musical background.
that's just how it is, period.
i know this because i could actively beatmatch and do seamless mixes in my first week of mixing.
i don't even listen to dnb, i spin techno ffs.
also, trying to put a definition to a set is just stupid, it's freedom of expression not an equation.
i bet your sets are boring as hell.
buckyisdan 1 year ago
You found breakbeats easier to mix than 4 to the floor beats ? Good for you.
I wonder how great they sounded in 'your first week of mixing'.
"trying to put a definition to a set is just stupid"
You misunderstood. What im talking about is the complete opposite of 'boring'.
Definition and dynamics, that is what music is about or it would be boring.
When you dj you have freedom of expression whether you like it or not.
Please think about what you are saying.

This is cool and all, but because of the genre it's hard for me to tell who's doing what.
For all I know, dude in the back could be unplugged and just bobbing his head up and down.

yeah XONE 92... it is SEEK's mixer.... nice but I think the Pioneer DJM800 is the best mixer out there hands down.....
ALLEN AND HEATH's have a lot of weird little quirky features unlike any other mixers that just don't make sense
