  • great engine sound. super vıdeo

  • nice to see a tonka in amongst all the F4s

  • 21 people are deaf

  • things huge

  • They were still in service when I was in the USAF from 81-84, but the F-15 was already our front-line fighter. If I'm not mistaken, a few were used during the first Gulf War, perhaps the RF4-C? It's sad to see the remaining ones used as target drones, but at least they go out in a blaze of glory instead of Rusting In Peace at Davis-Monthan.

  • That is the only aircraft to ever scare me. My first day aboard USS Forrestal CV-59 we were launching aircraft between cats 1 and 2. An F-4 was recovering and caught the #3 wire as the right main mount hit the deck and the aircraft turned towards me. The wire yanked it down and straight but by that time I had ran and jumped in the catwalk.

  • @hangfire04252 Do they have good laundry service on the Flat tops? :)

  • @tubefluid Laundry service??? I guess so. They got the skid marks out of my skivvies after that incident. Why do you ask?

  • That IS music, Mark.

  • That IS music, Mark.

  • Heard this sound for 3 years as crew chief in Bitburg Gemany.

Love the Colman towing one on the flitline.

    Good times!!

  • For the person who asked who still flew the F-4, the IRIAF(Iranians), the Japanese, Turks, Germans, quite possibly still the Greeks and Isrealis still use variants with only theTurks, Japanese and Iranians using them in any great numbers, mainly QRF or ADF but some CAS. Most others are in training units or used for wpns developement and/or target aircraft(US). Think the Aussies had some but not sure of disposition. None known in S. America.

  • Booo get the tornado out of the picture. it's making the Phantom look ugly

  • mmmm i love it when the j 79 starts to roar

  • @driftkingz109 A boring clip of the appalling F4 Phantom...Then a real Jet came into view...TORNADO...:)

  • @EnglishTurbines yup, you're welcome by the way. If it wasnt for the USA you would be watching german planes flying over.

you're welcome and your apology is accepted.

  • @beergut111 Oh, ya think? Well, as i recall we denied the Germans our airspace long before you lot showed up. This allowed your bombers to land in the UK if memory serves..Do you have History lessons in the USA?

  • @EnglishTurbines you wouldnt even have planes to gaurd your airspace if it wasnt for us.

    you're welcome.

  • @beergut111 Ah, yes, the P51D...Useless until fitted with our V12 RR Powerplant....your turn gutty.....:)

  • @EnglishTurbines you have a very poor attitude. you need to understand that everything dont revolve around england anymore.

  • @beergut111 Only giving you some facts my friend, ..I know you dont get out much...btw..I never implied everything still revolved around England anymore. Even if a lot of the more important technological advances still do...nothing changes eh?

  • Not much changes, like England buying P-51's, F-4's, and now F-35's. I don't understand how people can be so biased. The era of nationalism has past, there is no reason to go back.

  • @EnglishTurbines

Let's not have any of that nationalist crap on this site, now. This also goes for that beergut fellow...

  • @EnglishTurbines The F-4 Phantom was proof that with enough engine power, even a brick could fly supersonic. Even so, very few aircraft today matched its eventual versatility. That coupled with its longevity of service, is why it is regarded as one of the greatest fighters of all time. The Tornado still has some rather large boot to fill.

  • @deltadart10... Well ok, I just dont like the F4. It looks so ugly and cumbersome. Comparing it to the Tornado is also a useless debate as their roles are so different would you agree?

  • @EnglishTurbines Not at all. The Tornado like the Phantom is a multi-role aircraft. The Phantom developed from a fighter/interceptor while the tornado was born with many hats. Both aircraft have the same jobs but the Tornado does them more efficiently as a plane half the the Phantoms age should.

  • @deltadart10 Well, I wont deny the F4s performance, I believe we put RR Speys in ours, which gave them even better TWR figures...The Tornado though is famous for its grond attack role. Going in below Radar with itsnap of the earth capability, something which it is VERY good at. It also has exceptional speed and handling at very low level. In this respect the 2 aircraft are very different.

  • @EnglishTurbines RR makes a damn good engine and it made the Phantom even better. Its the swing wing that really sets the Tornado apart and grants the aircraft superb low lvl flying capabilities. I don't remember if it has the advanced terrain following system like the B-1, But it can get down and dirty like a fast mover can.

Only advanced pilots can handle a phantom that low with any accuracy.

  • @deltadart10 Yeah, I could not agree more with you. The F4 is bit tricky at low level by comparison, even at high speeds At lower speeds its a bit of a nightmare despite the saw tooth LEs.. The Tornado is a dream at low level and high speed, a very stable platform. Quite different, but I agree about the F4s performance re 1969 technology...:)

  • @EnglishTurbines Still pissed off the FAA needed F4 Phantoms in order to have modern fighter in 1960,s and 70,s, just like they needed US F4F, F6F, F4U and Avengers in WW2 to have modern aircraft US aircraft saved the FAA. Greatest fighter ever undefeated in dog fighting the F15 greatest bomber nothing else is even close the B52, greatest transport t DC 3 first flew in 1935 almost 1000 still flying today. C130 in production 50+ years .

  • Diesen Sound kann man in einem Video nicht vemitteln. Villeicht von einem "luft mofa"(alpha jet) villeicht....

    justus vom AG52 leck

  • Great video!! Is this in Germany? It looks like Wittmund or Jever airbase. Jagdgeschwader 71 (JG71) Richthofen.

    Cheers

  • yes its in germany ... rostock-laage airbase

  • who is the pilot?

  • Not quite as exciting as watching a WWII piston fighter start. Like a modern fuel injected Corvette compared to a 1967 427tri-power. The new one is faster but doesn't have that visceral ground pounding sound to it.

  • Well, the camera is a long ways away.

Those engines each make ten times the power of a Merlin or an R2800, and I have stood behind one at startup, full power and in afterburner.

Different kind of sound, but they definitely shake the ground and everything else.

  • I hope you weren't TOO close behind the engine on afterburner...that could be interesting. Certainly YouTube worthy, at least. I dunno; this video doesn't do much for me; it should be called "Phantom Warm-Up". I think jets vs piston engines is like steam vs diesel locomotives. They are both impressive ground shaking machines, but the steam loco is a fire-breathing monster. A diesel can pull more stuff faster than a steam loco, but the older stuff will always be best. Jets rock, but V-12 Rules!

  • I like anything that makes power, and I love the WWII piston aircraft engines.

    No sound like it.

I love trains whether diesel or steam.

Today I was standing behind an industrial version of a Phantom engine: The LM1500.

I was 25 yards back and off to the side a bit.

The sound shook my body so hard I couldn't hold the camera still.

You should see the afterburner J79 vids.

And I hope I am lucky enough to see a Merlin start someday.

  • I've heard these are one of the loudest jets out there. Since you've been behind one on takeoff, you think so?

  • Well, there's loud, there's really loud, and then there's beyond one's ability to really tell anymore... sensor overload.

All the jet engines I've been near have their own distinct character when starting and idling, but when at full power they are all right off the scale.

One jet might be "louder" than the other to someone standing 100 yards away.

Up close they all seem the same: your ears are completely overwhelmed, and your body is vibrating.

  • There is nothing good in the word killing.

On the other hand every country needs an army to defend itself.

Not only in the USA also in Germany, where I`m honored to be a Typhoon pilot, or in all the other countrys of the world.

If anybodey calls us nazis for our troups today, I just can give a big fart.

I am in the german air force. I am german moroccan, I love my country like anybody else in another country, and I also defending other countrys under the order of the UN and the NATO.

  • Very nicely put :)

  • We used a "Palouste Unit" that provided electricity and ground air to start the engines in the USAF. You could also use start cartridges but I never used them in the 5 years I flew this airplane. Most of the start cartridges were old (Vietnam vintage) and would hangfire a lot. The F-4 still was an awesome airplane. I got my Mach 2 pin from McDonnell-Douglas doing a Mach Run during a Functional Check Flight in an F-4.

  • well nikolaus and phonix032 if u dont like americans i guess u a hypocrit as you mre than likely using a american brand or part brand computer and american software so go fuck yaselves you two faced uneducated moronic excuses for human beings

  • How many engines does it have? I'm guessing two?

  • 2× General Electric J79-GE-17A

  • A Tornado comes in at 2:46 cool.

  • Comment removed

  • Did you really just ask that?

  • what a machine the f-4 is....ground breaking for its time..total speed machine

  • F4's can start their engine with GPU and with a cartridge, but cartridge start can damage the turbines

  • That is a GPU (ground power unit)

  • It's not an APU. It's an external air cart that provides the air needed to start the engines. An APU is an internal device that does the same thing, along with supply electrical power.

  • We called them "huffers"

  • Is a APU always needed to start a F-4?

  • You comment is very offensive. We freedom loving Citizen-Americans love helping every nation around the world as best we can, considering that we currently have a corrupt government.

I am saddened that you think this of us.

  • kinkygirl2008

don't you have other stuff to do you old albanian bitch?

  • que?

  • your being too polite to the ffer..... to all that hate america an americans FUCK OFF

  • Er.. the people that tell us to fuck off, can FUCK OFF themselves.

  • damn straight

    HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!!

  • He was loved not only by the germans, dude.

  • Nazi is Past leave it there. BTW they have the best beer in the world there and some are good people. Thats a pretty nice F4!

  • Why should pmberlin speak English when this is a German video??? At the begining the words are in German! So let him speak German if he wants to! And by the way, not all Germans ware and are nazis! And why should we, who we are paying back for the faults our ancestors 've made, not have the right to defend our own country? And if you would be clever you would be happy that we are buying planes and don't built them by ourselves, because so you know our weak points in airdefend...

  • Your right BeerBender. Everyone should speak the language they know. If they want to know what others are saying then they should look it up or get a translation software. ^_^

  • @pmberlin: english please!...

  • Well ...... how many ppl have Usa killed the last years ??????????

Usa should be armed with tootsticks.

  • USA has killed no more than any one country killing each other. there is no hope for any species that kills it's self for moral value alone

  • to chargerman770. Killing is just a part of our human nature/instinct. I prefer not to unless I have absolute no choice do you not agree? There is no moral in killing another creature. Just ignorant pride. ignorance=death And maybe a full stomach.

  • To torvequtt We're not the only one's. Every country kills. But at least were not massacring our own people for bogus beliefs or some other B.S. And it's toothpicks. N.Korea vids of people dead in streets, Saddam massacaring infants & people. We don't fight for fun we usually are asked to help countries If I remember right. OR If they bomb us we have to defend ourselves A basic right. Sure our leader is dumb as hell but not everyone is born smart. And to top it off they say Sht behind R backs.

  • what a great aircraft, it will be sadly missed when decomissioned.

the only one i've seen in the uk is at raf leeming in yorkshire, it's lying behind a hanger i assume for restoration or scrapping.

  • Irgendetwas hat die alte Phantom, jedenfalls zählt sie zu meinen heimlichen Lieblingsjets.

  • someones always bringing the nazi argument, now you did ;)

  • was ist das denn für ein Idiot ??

  • ...dumme Amis und andere , die außer ihrem Ghetto scheinbar nichts anderes kennen..

  • Well ...... how many ppl have Usa killed the last years ??????????

Usa should be armed with tootsticks.

  • At last an aircraft video without music..

  • I agree with you totally, i appreciate folks who want to practice their audio mixing techniques but sometimes actual engine sounds are better.

  • @mark56122 especially without topgun music , that really grates on my nerves

  • @mark56122 You mean you DON'T want to hear Surfing with the alien again?

  • @mark56122 Fuckin A !

  • @mark56122 damn i was hoping for some 009 soundsystem [/sarcasm] lol. anyways yeah am glad this isnt a startup video. but hte only thing you can hear is music

  • What role does Germany operate the F4 in?

  • QRA, Quick reaction alert. Also Airdefensie.

  • Good old Lady!!

  • What the hell was that??

  • are u sure its an engine start up? the sound is constantly the same and why wud there be men walking round it if its starting up?

  • I love the Phantom.

  • What country still flies the F4 Phontom? Or are they still being flown for national defense anywhere?

  • US still fly the phantom but for training only. Mostly just to get shot at.

  • Germany

  • Turkey has a few hundred.

  • thank you!

  • South korea~

  • KC-130J is where it's at. You fast moving bubbas don't know jack shit! HAHA!

  • Saw the Phantom from the roof of the tower at Ørland MAS today. What an amazing sound! Sounded like the sky was bursting. Beats the hell out of F16, JAS39 and Tornado sound wise, anyway ;)

  • Thanks for posting this!

I grew up close to an RAF base and seeing Phantoms screaming overhead was a common sight. They have an unmistakable sound and their silhoutte in the sky was just as unique.Great to see and hear one again!

  • considering the 45+ year gap between the raptor and phantom, i hope so

  • F-22 Raptor is better

  • Not many people know this but the reason its called an F4 phantom is because it can fly super sonic and you will not be able to see it. phantom=Ghost. The F4 phantom was the only fighter and the first fighter to shoot down a UFO in the late 60's

  • I could really see a tin plane with fireworks shooting down an FTL capable UFO.

  • Love those Phantoms. Sounds the same a when I would start them as a Plane Captain in the Navy.

  • Hey Humpday

I think this was one of our best F/B of that era. You were lucky enough to tool around with them. Good for you
