When i get tired from the routine and from all other music this song makes relax. Epic song and that was a reason to me Newcastle! is amazing see people sing it in the stadium!
@55honor I guarentee you more many more young people will have heard of Mark Knopfler compared with Mahler. I'm 17, never heard of Mahler, heard of Mark and I know who I'd listen to more: the guy who has sold over 120 million records. P.S. "celebRity".
@55honor Basically, your a moron. If you don't like Mark Knopfler's work (which is brilliant by the way) why did you bother watching this video and posting your nasty little comment, which was probably a waste of your time considering it's "garbage" - idiot!
@55honor Knophler is one of the most Respected Guitarist ever on the planet.
You cant even compare him with some Classical music composer, If i wanna hear Classical we got Bethooven and Mozart, If i wanna hear some Real Rhythmic Blues / rock, I sure dont put on some Clasical music, You simply cant compare this.
people who enjoy Rap / hip hop music, wont get that wibe off Rock, or Clasical, Your Childish, i have been like you, but i realised it were childish
@55honor I do admire your choice in music, ( am a fan of mahler as well. however, my tastes are quite broad. everythign from classical to mark knopflers work. just depends onwhat mood i am in
@55honor "Knopfler will end up in I'm a celebrity before long" ... are you stupid? he's hardly some X Factor reject! He's a brilliant musician/composer.
@55honor Well, I respect your opinion and you certainly have the right to express it here (even though I wonder what's the point of your comment. Do you think all MK fans who come to this site read it and think "Oh yes, he's right, how could we have been so deaf and not realized this earlier..."?). Anyway, here's my opinion: "utter garbage" also seems to be a valid description of your taste in music...
@MeMyselfAndEyez - what are you puking about Tosser? Read what I wrote again!! I am not knocking his music or how good he is etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc etc i am saying HE IS A SHOWMAN and as such should face the audience - debate over! He needs to face the Audience - simple as that. I also like interaction with the band but don't spend 75% of the performance with my BACK turned to the audience.
AWESOME tune and AWESOME guitarist! I also play on stage and I play a strat as well BUT the only criticism is when i pay to see a show i want to see him face me and play - i don't pay to watch his back!! He spends half his time facing away from the audience! YOU want to watch the man play not watch him watching the band!! Otherwise GREAT music!
@falconeti69 Maybe he doesn't want to look at your ugly mug while he's bashing a tune out? Perhaps he likes interaction with the band so the music is the best it can be?
@MeMyselfAndEyez What a crazy aswer! His a human being god dammed!!! You talk like he never makes a mistake!! Hes no one gods!!! Im sure that even Mark is laughing at your aswer!!! ARE YOU 8 YEARS OLD?!
@falconeti69 Dude. I would even pay Mark Knopfler to spit on my face. Show some respect and worship your god, Mark Knopfler. He has earned the right to moon his audience if he so wishes.
MANEY YEARS AGO ,I PLAYED WITH HIM AND DAVID,CANT SAY I LIKED HI MBACK IN THE 1970 BUT I ALWAYS HAVE AND ALWAYS WILL SAY WHATS ON MY MIND,HE IS ONE OF OUR BEST GUITAREST,HE CANT SING NEVER COULD,BUT,I AM A LOW LIFE THAT PLAYS GUITAR,HE HAS THE GOOD LIFE,HE IS NOW I HOPE A GOOD MAN,
one of the best guitarists ever...such passion in music! I can never expect that from today's artists. I hope some day music like this will return and wash away the greed, ignorance and hatreds in this world. Mark, thank you for your wonderful music. You are an inspiration for me learning guitar and I hope to once make songs like yours to show people that its not all about "feelings that tonight's gonna be a good night" or "lazy songs" but about love in music we all share.
@themadaboutmusic Absolutely disagree with you. It was Mark's decision to bring them into concert and they organically incorporated in his performance like Celtic quartet as well.
@SrdjanLimich In fact, I love the way Mark incorporated the Celtic tone in various tracks of the movie, Local Hero. But this track "Going home', was meant to serve the final scene, when the young Mac was going back home in the States with a mixed feeling of relief and yearning for something back there. The original soundtrack served the scene so perfectly well that ( IMO ) no other rendition can replace it. You know what I mean, if you also watched the film.
@themadaboutmusic I respect your opinion and accept your explanation, but anyway, I think, MK knows better what he's doing during HIS performance , so let him decide. He is much greater than we to decide what he has or hasn't to do with his music. Just enjoy this and other songs and compositions. Cheers and respect from Armenia
I discover MK and Dire Straits for me in 1978 and still enjoy his creativity and talent. And I like also that "Local Hero" is an anthem for Newcastle Utd FC, city where Mark used to live and grew up. No idea what his melody could be an anthem for Glasgow, where he was born. Maybe some of his compositions with Gaelic/Celtic spirit.
God I've loved Knopfler since I was 12 and that was a long long time ago...The Strat is best for this one, but the LP is best for the brothers i arms. Anything that requires grunt, the LP, and how good is he. Subtle, Soft, Heavy, Bang on one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

Nothin else beats this at SJP when you have 45k + going off their heads with the applause as the Mags run out to it - bizarre when you reckon it was written for a movie about a Scottish village LOL. But it's amazing and apart from Abide With Me and My Way it's prob the most played piece of music at any place with an NE postcode funeral and I'd prob have it at mine if I could. Shame I'd not hear it like but still its fab!
One word. absolutely spectaculare!!!!! He is the best song writer ever. It will be a big loss to music when he is gone. It truly will be a big loss to music. his music is like smoking a cubin cigar nothing will match his class and smoothness.
I'm listening him(and Dire Straits) since 1978, and still have an unsatiable desire to listen and listen him. He is getting better with age as a vintage wine. Recently discovered his Shangri-La disc and was totally amased. He's going back to his Celtic roots, becoming more and more mature, which for me means perfect. Best wishes aye.
@mynameisluke1971 i agree. his playing draws me into it and keeps me there. which is what drew me to dire straits back when. regarding music i will keep listening to it if it can capture and hold my attention. his guitars do just that and more.
Just have a look at his face.....he knows he's doing sth unbelievable, he's doing sth great for someone else, he's just like a beautiful gift by someone really influent up there..... the same " someone " is playing that guitar through him..... god bless u MK !
@GeorgeTel100 idk why this was spammed err flagged as spam. but yeah his fans WE keep this going. well no i tkae that back mark keeps this going with hauntingly beautiful melodies such as this. but we, the fans enjoy it. i wish that theyd re-unite even for 1 show id do whatever to go wherever to see it.
In my humble opinion this is one of the most beautiful tunes ever written. When you've been a long way from home for a long time, stick this tune on in your car as you round the corner and catch the first sight of your home town... it really has that feeling that you are indeed Going Home...
In the movie, the shallow American returns to Houston, to his highrise condo as the theme plays. A lonely moment of enlightening introspection for him(Stella!), the greatest ending movie music ever, for me.
My deepest condolences to Michael Warner's family and friends. He was an remarkable person, so intelligent, so curious, so full of life. His death yesterday the most terrible contradiction. I believe he has made a reference to this song in last note.
@filipino983 well vevo and adds keep youtube free remember that . yeah i dont like em either. but it wont change. vevo and others keep it going . we as users can get these videos up. ( in the us via fair use law of 1976) but not sure of other nations. anyhoo lets at least be glad theyre still here
@yamahonkawazuki Wow man, looks like you really know whats going on, and I obviously don't know anything hehe..... I applaude you for your reply, I guess I got caught up with the rage over ads a while back:) Thanks!!!
@filipino983 trust me i share your feelings and anger/frustration lol. wholeheartedly. the damned ads show up just as a certain part you want to see is showing on whatever video youre watching. wonder if the adblocker programs would stop these. so the vevidiots can get their cut and hte rest of us can blow em off?
17 people aren't going home... they're lost... Mark Knopfler makes the guitar sing like no-one else... I seriously believe if the great composers were alive to hear his music, they would cry... he creates a purity and beauty that is disappearing from our world through greed and ignorance... I hear many young people say they were born in the wrong generation... they value this music. They will be the leaders of the future. The individuals with a conscience. Peace, Love and Real Music.
@repthesoul Such are the sentiments invoked herein this music; notes speak just as well as Cohen's poetic words. A classic to equal Bach or Beethoven or Mascagani or Pachelbel....sadly, none of us will be around to make comment.
@repthesoul amen to that Eh?, i wish mr knopflers guitar would NEVER stop talking to me. melodies like htis put me at peace. and make me forget about my health lol :/
your comments are very nice romantic piffle. There are sheep and there are shearers. I didnt make it that way, but that is the truth, and it aint pretty. This is just temporary escapism, not leader manufacturing. Sorry, Mandela exception, not rule - and forged through injustice to boot.
Peace and Love?! Sounds like Ringo Starr is back in town...more hollow sound bytes.
@repthesoul I was born in 1981. The first album I remember is Brothers in Arms. I was born just in time for Mark's magnum opus. I just wish I'd been born in mid 70's, so I could have heard all their albums on vinyl. I have seen Mark live 4 times, and loved every second. I came across the Falklands version of "Brothers In Arms" on YouTube, and the Mandela live performance, and I cried my eyes out., This music is on a level with the all time great composers, Beethoven, Elgar, et cetera.
@repthesoul - I wish I could add to what you said. I can't. The man is a legend. I would give all of my credentials, degrees, reputation and a number of bodily organs to be able to play like Mark. Hats off to you sir, for capturing everything about the genius that is Mark Knopfler. We all live in his shadow.
What a pleasure it must be to play with him. I really think the other musicians smiles are genuine, and they are all happy to be experiencing musical magic....
I saw Dire Straits @Earls Court back in 1992 or 93, can't remember the exact year (too many drugs between then and now) and they were the BEES KNEES!!
The guy must have used 8 different guitars during the set.
if anyone can help me remember the year I would appreciate it.
Heartwrenching!! A North East spiritual. I'm a Yorkshire man but my dead Grandparents came from North East England and this tune more than anything I know has the power to connect me to them. Mark I salute you!
This guy never ceases to amaze me. A lot of people can play well when the music is loud but Mark can take it from one extreme to the other and lots of times you don't even realize you are listening to a guitar. Simply, the best there has even been!
Look at the man playing the guitar behind Mark Knopler in this Local Hero - Going Home renditionNight in London UK. If I'm not mistaken it is Glen Hansard (Falling Slowly - Movie:Once) . He is the one with the beard looking like a major item on his Bucket List has just been realized. Two of my favorite artists. Introduced to me by another favorite of mine. Mary Robertson
@maryatvan I think that guitarist is Richard Bennett; He is introduced on the Night In London VHS tape and was there and introduced when I saw MK in concert is Seattle 2010
@maryatvan Guitarist is I think a guy named Richard Bennett. He is introduced in the VHS tape for this Night In London and also was the guitarist with him in Seattle concert last year
Wonderful song from a truly great movie and soundtrack, Mark "Just Too Damned Good" Knopfler and a splendid band of talented players, making for one incredible "Night In London"!!!!!! As always thanks to: Platoon99 and You Tube for the upload and for leaving the lights on the space! God Save Mark Knopfler!
This was played at my brothers funeral, only the slow version without percussion and drums and yeah it does have that funeral type song sound, very appropriate, might give " amazing grace" a run for it's money.
When i get tired from the routine and from all other music this song makes relax. Epic song and that was a reason to me Newcastle! is amazing see people sing it in the stadium!

Awesome song. Shame about the lack of Saxophone in this version however. The guitar sounds slightly thin on its own.

Remember when you could watch a video without having to sit through a commercial
Remember when music videos were uploaded by users and not VEVO
Remember when all the info was to the right of the video
Remember you could rate a video 1-5 stars
Remember the famous yellow subscribe button
Remember when the users controlled the site and now corporations?
WE MISS THE OLD YOUTUBE!
Post this in every video and lets start a revolution
Thumbs up to keep top

17 people aren't going home... they're lost... Mark Knopfler makes the guitar sing like no-one else... I seriously believe if the great composers were alive to hear his music, they would cry... he creates a purity and beauty that is disappearing from our world through greed and ignorance... I hear many young people say they were born in the wrong generation... they value this music. They will be the leaders of the future. The individuals with a conscience. Peace, Love and Real Music.
repthesoul 11 months ago 60
@repthesoul Such are the sentiments invoked herein this music; notes speak just as well as Cohen's poetic words. A classic to equal Bach or Beethoven or Mascagani or Pachelbel....sadly, none of us will be around to make comment.
bretbryan 10 months ago
@repthesoul amen to that Eh?, i wish mr knopflers guitar would NEVER stop talking to me. melodies like htis put me at peace. and make me forget about my health lol :/
yamahonkawazuki 6 months ago
@repthesoul
your comments are very nice romantic piffle.
Fizzypop1211 4 months ago
@repthesoul I was born in 1981. The first album I remember is Brothers in Arms. I was born just in time for Mark's magnum opus. I just wish I'd been born in mid 70's, so I could have heard all their albums on vinyl. I have seen Mark live 4 times, and loved every second. I came across the Falklands version of "Brothers In Arms" on YouTube, and the Mandela live performance, and I cried my eyes out., This music is on a level with the all time great composers, Beethoven, Elgar, et cetera.
SuperPrivate2011 4 months ago
@repthesoul - I wish I could add to what you said. I can't. The man is a legend. I would give all of my credentials, degrees, reputation and a number of bodily organs to be able to play like Mark. Hats off to you sir, for capturing everything about the genius that is Mark Knopfler. We all live in his shadow.

I saw Dire Straits @Earls Court back in 1992 or 93, can't remember the exact year (too many drugs between then and now) and they were the BEES KNEES!!
The guy must have used 8 different guitars during the set.
if anyone can help me remember the year I would appreciate it.
They were supported by Was not Was!!
