Thank you for putting this together, chrono cross is a game I shall forever cherish. For the life lessons, music, characters. The whole thing is just too damn beautiful! Lol
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as Chrono Cross. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
The quality of the music in this game was mind blowing. the first time I turned it on, I just sat looking at the main title screen stupified. I don't remember how many times I would get to a new area and put the controller down to listen to the music.
Just like music / pop artists these days video games no longer have that emotional charm that they usta have very few games these days actually make me cry, laugh, and shock me.
This is the single best videogame series on youtube!, & thats coming from a longtime 27yold gamer who has played every game on your list & then some. Keep It up man.
Why can't game developers just take a few steps back and reinvent the traditional rpg when it pushed itself to be a work of art. Nowadays the video game industry has come to be so productively mass in media and popularity that no longer are creators with great imaginations making games, but big business corporations only wanting to shell out the next call of duty, the next hollywood-esque action packed game, or that flare but no heart. These may not have pushed the polygons but they had heart.
This game seriously had it all; Beautiful artwork, incredible music, a huge and diverse character cast, and a very deep story that just captivates you no matter what. It's truly amazing what they were able to accomplish with this game considering the legacy technology they were using back then.
It's just a shame that some fans look past this game simply because it has limited connectivity to Chrono Trigger. Regardless, it's still arguably a masterpiece, even today.
@AlfredoAVA It's not that it had limited connectivity to Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross was so vastly different and tried to do so many things (some well) that the flaws were pretty much glossed over in people's minds. Yes, there's a huge cast, but the majority of them have no meaning to the story. The soundtrack is probably the most amazing one ever, but it hardly makes a connection with Cross' story.
Cross is an amazing game, but with those flaws, it just doesn't hold up as well over time.
Wow this brings back so many memories. I remember playing this game in my early teen years. I never got to finish it either because I lost the second disc! I remember how much I wanted to live in that little tropical town in the beginning of the game. It's sad that they don't make games like these anymore.
If i recal... One gaming magazine review once said... Game of The year... Worst sequel of the year... This game was magical and brought back alot of feelings of chrono trigger and reinvented the combat to the point where it was completely different but you could still see the similarities.
Thank you for making this stream of videos. They are very lovely. Volume 1 and volume 2 helped me to recall the old games I used to play. Volume 3 onward brought me beautiful music. You must have spent a lot of time for this. Just to let you know that it is meaningful. You really did a good job.
Just amazing! Next to Chrono Trigger (also by Mitsuda), the best OST for a game I've ever heard. It really fits the colourful and rich textures the game offers on a visual level and ofc. the great story.. What made these soundtracks stand out for me is the fact that they're really part of the story, part of that world...
I played most of the Final Fantasy series growing up and their games have the best soundtracks out there, but if I had to pick the best game soundtrack of all time it would have to be Chrono Cross.
The best soundtracks out there have 2-5 tracks that are magnificent and you'll remember them forever. This game has closer to a dozen.
I agree! I love the FF soundtracks and all, but there's something in my heart that will always make me choose Chrono Cross over FF. Cross' music is more memorable to me for some reason =]
I can reasonably say I've never completrely understood the story of this game. Never. Not that it's a bad game, though. Not as great as Trigger--and quite frankly, I think it was horrible as a sequel--but I still enjoyed it.
@FinalFantasyXIILover the character devolopment was pretty bad but the story, music, enviroments and everything else is way better than chrono trigger
Geez man, half of the genuis behind this game is how smoothly and subtly it ties in to the original game. That's the thing. Most people who didn't like Cross didn't pick up on just how marvelously it takes the story of Trigger and expands upon it - granted, in ways that are hard to understand unless you SERIOUSLY pay attention.
Making a TON of references to Trigger does not make it a good story nor a good sequel, which is really all the game did in terms of being a sequel. Meh. Like I said--horrible sequel, but enjoyable none the less.
You can't win against Fargo at first. You have to go to Sneff and get turned into a cat so you can go behind the counter in the inn and up the ladder there.
yeah, I know, thanks. It's just that at first, I didn't really want to go through the trouble of finding, downloading and configuring a suitable emulator and rom for it. But now I keep wanting it more and more so I probably will look into it.
Chrono Cross brought us some of the most obscure yet most memorable music in the Square video game line. I always enjoy hearing these wonderful sequences.
That confuses me too. It wasn't as good as Trigger overall, but few things are.
It was a weaker story and the obsession with giving people crazy accents was a little goofy. The system was interesting, though, since it forced people away from the lather-rinse-repeat strategies. Having the fights, particularly the boss fights, be a little longer would have helped that.
This vid is about the music, though, and my favorite tune was the Miguel fight and I'm sad it wasn't included here.
Oh man, last year I walked into a building on campus and a group of about 30 hot Asian chicks were dancing to the first song played in this video. I almost thought I was imagining it because I'd never seen anyone play this music in public before.
My favorite soundtrack of all time, beats any movie soundtrack as well, in my opinion. I'm actually grateful that this game is such a hidden gem. A lot of beautiful things are found in things few people can truly see :P haha...
@garudoh Thank you for making this stream of videos. They are very lovely. Volume 1 and volume 2 helped me to recall the old games I used to play. Volume 3 onward brought me beautiful music. This game has by far the best music I have ever heard in a video game, beating out even Final Fantasy 7 and 8 (which songs are also made up of pure masterpieces).
Great game to boot, I beat it 3 times when I was younger. =)
Oh nooo, the ending cut off right before the really gentle part. :( Oh well, this OST is definitely one of the best ever composed. I'm glad I own it haha. If you don't, get it fast!
Although I had a number of gripes with this game, it undeniably did have one of the best game soundtracks ever. Everything a sequel to Trigger should have been.
I think your right. I was able to squeeze out 10 minutes and 33 seconds on a video. I removed it though and made it smaller since it didnt render in HQ.
I thought YT stopped taking Director applications, but I haven't really looked into it. I'm kind of good with the whole 10 minute limit thing, it's part of what separates me from numerous other VGM channels out there.
Man, I can never get enough of this music. Chrono Cross had one of the best soundtracks ever made.
Only one criticism: where the heck is People Seized with Life!? ;) I would consider that one of the greatest musical compositions ever; it's so incredibly haunting and sad.
Holy shit, it's Gabu. Haven't heard from you since the Gamespot days. You're technically my oldest subscriber, and probably one of the few that knows where this whole channel spawned from.
Anywho, as for any track omissions, well, it ain't easy picking only 10 minutes. I consider my videos like samplers to whet your appetite.
What`s the song at 7:55? I can`t find the name for it. It`s melody is so similar to the vocal melody of `Hiru no Tsuki` in the Outlaw Star OST, just the chime bit.
Take your own advice. This says 414. You have 414 music entries. I'm going to assume someone has taken over your account, because I find it too hard to believe you suffer from alzheimer's.
Anyways, I subscribe to you for a reason. It's not a negative reason. Don't throw a fit over one little comment.
Assumption seems to be one of your strong points. Had you checked out the series a bit more like I suggested, you would've realized that I hadn't featured any 32-bit games before entry #401. So yes, it did take me 14 videos.
Sure, discredit the basis on which I started this series months ago, just because you think a certain game should've been featured right away.
Maybe there's a reason why I made the videos in such a way, but you couldn't consider why that's the case, because for some reason you're trying to prove an empty point.
Just so you know, it'll probably take me 800 videos before I get to one of your PS2 favorites. Will you be compelled to post a comment about my ordering at that point as well?
Maybe it's me, but it came across as a bit backhanded. I'm glad you get some enjoyment out of my stuff, but that doesn't necessarily equate to me catering to your expectations. I'm hoping that you can understand that.
In any case, bogus YouTube confrontation is lame, so let's toss this aside. You strike me as someone who can generate more gamer-centric conversation anyway.
On the PS2 tip, I'm sure I'll rustle up a fair amount, although SOTC will be among the first. That much we can agree on.
One of The best RPGs of all time or maybe one of the best games ever. This game is such special because i remeber playing 8 years ago. is not the first Rpg(chrono trigger that has a very similar soundtrack)Iplayed But the first PSX game i played with such a biutiful soundtrack.
Best video game OST out there. I always try to avoid 'best ever' claims, but it is that good. The entire soundtrack is consistently amazing.

This is your best work yet garudoh, because this is my favorite RPG; might even be my favorite game.

And the #1 game in need of a sequel is???

Day of the Tentacle?
Oh, you meant this game. Yeah, sure, I'd go for that.

What`s the song at 7:55? I can`t find the name for it. It`s melody is so similar to the vocal melody of `Hiru no Tsuki` in the Outlaw Star OST, just the chime bit.

It took 400 something entries before you landed on one of the top 5 game OSTs of all time?
Mozgus 3 years ago
No, it took me 14. I think you should better familiarize yourself with my channel before posting comments like this one.

Mozgus 3 years ago
Assumption seems to be one of your strong points. Had you checked out the series a bit more like I suggested, you would've realized that I hadn't featured any 32-bit games before entry #401. So yes, it did take me 14 videos.

I really don't care what your generational offerings are. My original post still holds true.
Mozgus 3 years ago
Sure, discredit the basis on which I started this series months ago, just because you think a certain game should've been featured right away.
Maybe there's a reason why I made the videos in such a way, but you couldn't consider why that's the case, because for some reason you're trying to prove an empty point.
Just so you know, it'll probably take me 800 videos before I get to one of your PS2 favorites. Will you be compelled to post a comment about my ordering at that point as well?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Outside of Shadow of the Colossus, PS2's most well received titles were incredibly lacking in the music department.
What the hell are we even fighting about again? Just take a compliment. Jesus.

Chrono Trigger is still better than Chrono Cross in my opinion, but it doesn't mean that Chrono Cross's a bad game, you should still try it~ :D

I really don't like this game, but at least some of the music, ESPECIALLY the opening, is pretty darn good.

This music is kickass!

Such a beautiful soundtrack, thanks for sharing the video with us.

BESTBESTBEST!
Thanks for putting this video together.
Even if you leave out some great pieces (subjective), this should motivate anyone enough to get the whole OST.

ah the legendary chrono cross
one the best music ever made for VG
untill this day theres very few newer games (ps3 generation) that can rival those in that golden era... imho

Thanks. Hopefully I'm getting better at making these vids with time, although I'm sure I'll still forget some standouts here and there.
