I used to fly in on the sea planes in the 70's as a kid.. we used to have to pick up our feet because a river of salt water would run down the aisl.. later they discontinued thier use because they flipped over and killed people..
I flew into Catalina today, it's an awesome approach but I don't think it's actually any harder than any other airports. It's simply the fact that 22 slopes uphill so there can be a tendancy to land and slam on the brakes and burst a tyre, when there's still another 1000ft of runway available.
Just aim for the numbers and ignore the rest of the runway. Now landing on runway 4 (the opposite direction) is tricky. That one screwed me up. Had to go around twice because I had never done it. Talk about an illusion!
The thing is the runway has a hump in the middle. It's easy to misjudge how much runway you have left. There was an accident(several) but one was a Lear jet.
Many people I talk to tell me how its a tough runway to land on, I don't see what the big deal is. I think you just need to really keep in mind the runway elevation so that you do not go below it on final.
@rjrhea well,it is easy 2 land catalina ociano is a little harde cause tha e rwy shorter than catalina but,i do al ways come higher on catalina apt just in caseof down drafts!
Great video... how fast were you going when you touched down? ...and did I see sweat on our pilot's brow? Thanks for uploading

It looks like they finally repaved the runway.
It's been two years since I have landed there however I can easily say I paid for at least $1000 of that runway with my $20 landing fee's!

But the runway is sometimes bumpy.

Yeah, sometimes. You have to call ahead of time to find out if the runway will be bumpy.

there's the fact you can't see one end from the other. This has caused people to think they need to go around or take off before they should.
Downdrafts on final, so if you aim for the numbers, you are being risky.
Bumpy, so keep the yoke back. There's no services if you screw up or prop strike or something.
