It was a hun skull. The Huns invaded europe in the 4th century. The huns were prodigiously ugly people. It's not so bizarre that they had no contact with one another and performed the same acts. Lots of communities have done similar things but no one freaks out about that - look at piercings, tattoos, music, art, pottery.
