Even in this apparently simple video, Bowie reveals the stages of development of time in all its truth and irony. The dark-haired queen is young and sassy, not fully refined but full of condidence and the advantage of youth. The red-haired queen is at the top of her game, poised and together. The grande dame at the end has been through it all. She designs the dresses and produces the whole show and has gained respect in her position. None would exist and survive to flourish without each's value.
Depth perception is only the illusion generated by 2 dimensional images combined in the mind by absorbing parallax and interpolation at so many frames per second. In one still photograph all the information of the remainder is included by exclusion. The hemispheres of the brain create useful data that is perception of the illusion that time is passing. But at the highest level, time stands still. What was is, and what will be, was already written. When the yin/yang of it all understands, we see.
The energy from previous space fabric is being recycled to continue the momentum, like a cosmic slinky that needs the first part of the spiral to be the last, caught up in the momentum with finite energy/matter. This causes mind to catch up with creation principles as all energies become exhausted in quantity but not intention. The jigsaw puzzle reassembles itself as a whole picture once the last piece is found.
This supports a theory I've been formulating: that Bowie's music and even videos were messages directly from future energies, that time is also catching up to their ultimate significance and cosmic meanings which weren't even fully dreamt of by the artist himself!
This indicates that the "fabric" of space is now ready to adjust and be shown adjusting; leapfrogging away from the Big Bang and catching the envelope of acceleration. The strings, or rather, scrunchies, are reaching the limit of initial energy required to accelerate the runaway universe. The energy needed to initiate the creation of our 3D illusion, relatively immense, was yet finite! Everything was imagined in 2D (still is) in the WORD. To create a holographic depth, time was the price to pay.
I've caught the universe adjusting its garments as I catch sight of it preparing itself before I look upon its illusion. Like the brunette queen's last second fix at 2:03, just before she knows she's "on". My psyche of late has been gravitated to hyper points where quantum mechanics are coyly allowing me glimpses of the backstage preparations before the performance. The cosmos only flashes a light when necessary, conserving energy only revealed when someone is then directly observing the scene.
@claudefrog Truer words were never spoken. It's like that guy in that movie...The Dead Zone. Christopher Walken. Yeah that's it. He looks like he's dead. I've said it before and I'll say it again: David Bowie is at his most appealing when he looks like the living dead! Half alive, half in the next world, beyond mortals. It relates to his whole image of male and female balance. One eye permanently dilated as in death. The other very much alive. Viewing this image, we see the entirety of humanity.
@Alilishasha Doesn't he have some kind of unibrow in Be my wife? if not, then sometime around that time he had one. Bowie is god, though. the only one who could rock a unibrow hahahhahha
So cute, my 9-year old little sister just wondered how BEAUTIFUL Bowie was still back then.. And then she said I shoul marry him. Never heard something so adorable and dreamy!
Remember those Penthouse Forums? Do they still sell those? Anyway the guy writing in would always say something like, "I was slightly larger than average". So I guessed he must have "checked out" all the other guys. Anyway, this song brings to mind the Italian guy in grade school. You never remember the guy with the littlest dick. But you always remember the guy who was hung like a horse and had hair on his balls when he was 9! But it's true, as a kid, you were always checking out the other guy.
You ever notice the authority of characterization Bowie had for the individual characters? The Brunette was definitely full of ego, but with a little money, you coud get your way. The redhead would do you in a second if you gave her the right pinch while dancing. And the old Dame, if you could chat her up, she would definitely take you to her hotel and consider you to appear in her next fashion show. Sassy Joan Crawford. Ethereal Greta Garbo. Regal Betty Davis. And of course, boyish David Bowie!
Boys keep swinging their... Anyway, it shows a lot of sense of humor for our usually very serious artist. A nice comedy routine, a total satire on sexual mores, and Bowie taking a few grins at his own reputation in the process. If only time could have stood still a little longer at this relaxed point in time. Alas, too brief, had yet to do Ashes To Ashes. But at least we have Lodger for his own guest spot, that introduced all sorts of interesting tangents. Lodger could have been called Tangents.
I wonder if those girls are somehow related to Bowie. There's a slight family resemblance. Probably nepotism, getting their foot in the door on David's coattails. I know! They could come back with a follow-up song, "Girls keep Switching"! They could cross dress as boys!
I'd do the icy, elegant redhead first. But the brunette looks kinda sassy and fun to tame. Hell, the old lady, you know she'd enjoy it; I'd take a swing at her too!
I love the old dame at the end. He looks like Bette Davis. I remember watching this with friends in grade school and they got upset seeing him in drag. What boring people they've turned out to be.
David Bowie was/is a true original. I don't think most people realize what an impression he made in the industry, and how many people have copied him, or have copied others that have copied him. His influence still has a lingering effect.
I remember seeing this on late night television as a child (Midnight Special? Don Kirschner?) and being a bit disturbed. I clearly remember him being in drag and smudging his lipstick and not really understanding what that was all about. Later I realized DB was way ahead of his time.
Watching this, I'm reminded not only of how groovy it is, but how great of an actor David is and how he is much more of a turn-on in a dress than beyonce in the vevo margin.
Love this song. I also like Bowie's suit and tie, and his movements. Who was he trying to imitate at the end? An old lady of some sort..An elderly Marlene Dietrich?
@pauline5248 I believe that was supposed to be the elderly Marlene Dietrich. Bowie had worked with her briefly in a movie around that time. The woman in the center, to me at least, is Bowie doing a trashy Shirley McLaine, and the other one, who knows? A middle aged Lauren Bacall?
@outnaway You're right about the last one. The movie with Marlene was Just a Gigolo, I think. The last one was meant to be Jerry Hall, former model. Check her out on Bryan Ferry's Let's Stick Together vid towards the end. She was with Bryan until she hooked up with someone who could buy him 20 times over: Mick Jagger.
If she'd married Bryan instead she could have been Jerry Ferry.
FFS, this guy talking about homoeroticism in the seventies... he was ages ahead of his time. I love it how he incorporates the gay/queer themes in some of his songs for what they represented and not just because of their shock value (like Gaga, Jeffree Star or pretty much everyone does these days).
@jrmetmoi Because I was pre-teen unaware of cross-dressing and you have to admit Bowie makes quite a scary woman. The shock of it opened me to understand artistic expression by daring performers and that's why I'm thankful to Bowie for opening my (and many others) eyes. Annie Lennox and Boy George were easy to accept after this.
@Pirate7X The shiny dress David wears when he plays the redhead is so hot, I swear somebody would wear it on a red carpet today! The way David acts as these three different women especially the little old lady at the end makes me regret that he didn't go hugely into acting be it in indie films or Hollywood even though his music is legendary. He would have been great as he has the instinct but he acts only once in a great while sadly.
When I played this video I got some ad with a woman singing about I whip my hair around or some crap, then Bowie comes on singing Boys keep singing. Why would I buy some stupid ass song called I whip my hair after watching bowie doing Boys keep swinging If I was her and they stuck my commercial there I'd crawl under a rock and die. what the hell happened to music. I remember when Boys keep swinging came out. I doubt anyone will remember when I whip my hair came out. Boys keep swinging baby!
I grew up listening to my older sister playing his records in the early 70s. It sounded great, but didn't realize at the time how groundbreaking it was for a performer to have a new personality with each album. He mastered the art of reinventing himself while Madonna was still in grammar school. And when conceptual music videos were making the scene, who else but Bowie had the balls to come out in drag, rip off a wig and smear lipstick, effectually saying F you to everyone!
@kurtnj63 No one, but no one can hold a candle to Bowie. The younger crowd who only knows China Girl and Let's Dance should take the time and listen to his early releases. They'll learn what real music and rebellion is really all about.
@groverjuicy I agree the Old Bowie lady is creepy. He captured that old person thing...where they just sort of stare and move their jaw about. Way before we had the LUXURY OF YOUTUBE, I saw this video in passing and said, 'what the f*ck was that' and then had to wait years before seeing it again. What fun!
so cool and weird at all angles: 1) a great, churnin' n chuggin' riff 2) cool nasally background vocals 3) what's up with Bowie's dancing, it's over-the-top Elvis the Pelvis 4) the absurd lyrics "when you're a boy you get to wear a uniform...you drive a car and everything...wtf, I love these dumb lyrics! 5) the Three Bowettes and each has her own style and demeanour 6) love the noise rock guitar solo 7) love the wig getting ripped off and lipstick shmeared
Bowie got this idea from Trassexual, Berlin Night Club owner, Romy Haag, whom he dated and , and watched her performances, and at the end of Her songs she sould smear Her Lipstick, in a symbolic gesture...Thats where he got it !
This video, or rather this song, explained to me what I always knew, but was too afraid to admit. I loved Queen and Freddie and all that, but Bowie made it oh so clear that i wasn't like the other boys, and after watching this for the first time (on Saturday Night Special or whatever), I knew that I was gay and, frankly, rather proud of it.
This dude got balls the size of bowling balls. If he came out today and was 23 and put out this video it would freak people out even more than Marilyn Manson, and he did this 30 years ago!!
Bowie was such a tour de force in the 70's and then he bursts into the 80's with this truely awesome song. The gutar riff at the end of the song is truely inspiring. I still listen to this song every so often and it's a classic.
@madwhinney No, they all changed instruments, probably provoked at least in part by Brian Eno (at least, it sounds like a typically oblique strategy).
I'm looking forward to the Duran Duran cover for the David Bowie tribute. They already covered Fame in 1981, which was a great cover. Hope Andy Taylor will participate.
They used to play this video and "DJ" on ROCKWORLD - a late night new-wave/rock/punk music video show years before MTV, ,like '79/80....blew my mind back then, still does now.
Isnt it wonderful .. I've been a fan of his for at least, what? 34 years.. ahem I never liked this song but - thanks to i-Pod I had it on shuffle and this came on Mwaah mwaah Mr. Bowie heaven and I luv yah.
Brilliant! Massively underrated as a performer. He is 62, but he seems to have been around for ever!
Believe it or not - his real name is David Jones, but he changed his stage name to Bowie (after Jim Bowie - knife - look it up!) because of a certain david jones in the music scene at the time! Who became more famous???
This was the first song I ever heard on CD (back in 1988). My friend Paul ran and turned it down on the guitar solo - one of the first big hints I had that I was not as other boys(musically) was that I wanted it LOUDER. :)
i remeber watching this vid on Mtv and my dad walked in just as Bowie smears his lipstick...boy was he pissed...almost yanked the cable out...back then pop music scared alot of parents...iggy, Lou Reed shooting up on stage, even Elton was a rebel back then
Hey Butthead get a load of those nads on those chicks. Beavis, chicks don't have nads. WOH, those are dudes. No Butthead those are chicks with nads. Oh, right Beavis.
You are bang on about the intellectual atmosphere of the 70's. This was the decade that gave us the vicious, fearless, take no prisoners National Lampoon-the publication that, after Mad Magazine, most influenced my world view and sense of humour. Unfortunately it was also the decade that produced everything else that most people associate with the 70's.
the way he dance is out of normal dancers, and his voice!! the way he change en every song, listening is not enough for me, i need to see him singing.

I grew up listening to my older sister playing his records in the early 70s. It sounded great, but didn't realize at the time how groundbreaking it was for a performer to have a new personality with each album. He mastered the art of reinventing himself while Madonna was still in grammar school. And when conceptual music videos were making the scene, who else but Bowie had the balls to come out in drag, rip off a wig and smear lipstick, effectually saying F you to everyone!
kurtnj63 1 year ago 5
@kurtnj63 No one, but no one can hold a candle to Bowie. The younger crowd who only knows China Girl and Let's Dance should take the time and listen to his early releases. They'll learn what real music and rebellion is really all about.

I love this song but the Bowie in old lady clothes (right at the end) reminds me of my friend's aunt. Creepy...
groverjuicy 1 year ago
@groverjuicy Personally, he reminds me of Frances La Tour from "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" and "Alice in Wonderland" dressed like that...
LaDracul 1 year ago

5) the Three Bowettes and each has her own style and demeanour 6) love the noise rock guitar solo 7) love the wig getting ripped off and lipstick shmeared
totally ahead of our own time!

Bowie got this idea from Trassexual, Berlin Night Club owner, Romy Haag, whom he dated and , and watched her performances, and at the end of Her songs she sould smear Her Lipstick, in a symbolic gesture...Thats where he got it !

When I first watched this video I didn't realize that the "chicks" doing backup were Bowie until the very end. lol

Oh and Adrian delivers what may be my favorite guitar solo of all time. I've spent a lifetime to be able to play like that, and now I can.

This video, or rather this song, explained to me what I always knew, but was too afraid to admit. I loved Queen and Freddie and all that, but Bowie made it oh so clear that i wasn't like the other boys, and after watching this for the first time (on Saturday Night Special or whatever), I knew that I was gay and, frankly, rather proud of it.

lol i was wondering why those women sounded like men and then I realised they were all him XD the last bits funny <3

Volgan16666 1 year ago
Tremendous Bowie song-guitar work way ahead of its time. Also wonder if they did all change instruments or was Bowie just being frivilous.!
madwhinney 1 year ago
@madwhinney No, they all changed instruments, probably provoked at least in part by Brian Eno (at least, it sounds like a typically oblique strategy).

I'm looking forward to the Duran Duran cover for the David Bowie tribute. They already covered Fame in 1981, which was a great cover. Hope Andy Taylor will participate.
