Sabayon Linux, IBM Thinkpad R40 1.3Ghz, 768Mb RAM, 80Gb hd, with this machine and an amazing setting on my init's and a kernel compiled from the source (not generic or binary), I achieved 23 sec of boot time... I will make a video of this achievement and post it here.
My HP530 boots Ubuntu 9.04 (mind you, Gnome) in 30 seconds, if you boot Debian with LXDE in 37 seconds then there's something wrong with your configuration.
Ubuntu 9.04 boot faster than the older version. My 6 years old laptop with PM 1.2GHz 1GB ram laptop, 80GB 5400rpm HDD can boot from put the button to full GUI in about 17 to 20 sec. with xubuntu. so...
My debian is booting faster on virtualbox machine :D

I boot my debian in 10 seconds, with samba, cups, gdm3, networking, alsa, ip forwarding + iptables rules, and uvesa, that console is nasty.
Ubuntu is for kids.
Nuff said.
