  • Commodore 64 fanboys - they just didn't get it, did they?!

It was the fact that the Spectrum's hardware WAS so limited that meant coders had to work harder to make a great game, often finding clever ways around the machine's flaws. It made them better coders.

C64 coders had everything on a plate - hardware sprite handling, a superb sound chip, etc. This often made them complacent and lazy to the extent that, proportionally, there were probably more poor games on the C64 than on the Speccy.

  • Thanks for uploading this game. What an absolute classic, really showed off what the Speccy could do and the 128k version was fantastic. Many fond memories playing this back in the day.

  • I can't belive people who says that Spectrum 48k (or higher) had better games than Commodore 64. Heck, they suck. Colors changing on character as it moves, sometimes it can not be seen due to blend inns with background. No sprites. Bad sound. Few colors. What is there to like about it? If this is the best game on spectrum - well, it says a lot. Grief.

  • Amazing game, i finished it a few times back in the day. Used to love seeing how many objects i could cram in a room before it ground to a halt. Also remember putting tables/chairs on top of guards bodys to stop them respawning. The fact the world was persistent with objects staying where u put them when u entered/exited a room was also quite advanced for the time. Probably the best game on the spectrum in my opinion.

  • Swedish game, yeaaaah

  • One of my favorites for my old retired zx spectrum

  • So many memories!!

  • The first game I remember that even at the age of 12 made me realise that computer games could make you think and it was a genre of enertaimnet would last you into middle and old age.

  • One of my favourites i finished this on the C64 version where it was different but this looks really cool and graphically although black and white the animation and characters are a lot better here than the other Versions.

  • @Realmasterorder I heard the C64 version cannot be completed (without a cheat device) due to a bug which occurs near the end of the game, preventing passage to the upper levels of the castle/village/manor/whatever. Is it true?

  • @SPeacock i really am not sure about this but i know i did not finish the game back then,it was many years ago so i cant remember although some of these games were just to hard to finish especially when playing as a kid but there could be an issue perhaps in some early Version of the game.

  • Was a great game, the ICO of its time, as was Twin Kingdom Valley

  • Just found this, Thanks Spinny.

  • I was expecting more screens in the main gameplay area. Going down the well is just suicide, unless you use the scroll. There is nothing in that area anyway.

  • i didnt have a clue what to do in this game i just liked moving funiture around and organising stuff on tables lol

  • my favorite game, i wish they could do a remake of this.

  • Great game. Maybe someone has already done a remake but can't release it due to copyright.

  • I wonder if Bo Jangeborg has looked at this clip, if he does.

    you inspired me..

  • From what i've heard cause i don't bother playing this type of games myself .they said this game is a legend @ its type.and verry difficult.

Nice 2 see the 128k. version .I don't think i ever had it in my collection.

    Good post Spinny !

  • The only difficult thing about it is towards the end of the game. Most of the puzzles can be worked out but it does take a lot of playing to get anywhere.

  • arrgh them skeletons and things that stalk you are hard to get around!! I have played this the last two nights, love the music

  • I wouldn't bother going down the well and trying to beat the skeletons. That whole area is a dead end with no objects or purpose. Those monks are a right pain though. You can freeze them with an egg timer or kill them with the cross or potion bottles with 2 of them on the stairway.

  • spectrum music on last fm/music/D-jooz/8-bit+Juice

  • omfg please tell me what the song is called at the start from 00:01 - 00:53, i would wank off a horse to get it.

  • me 2

  • Interesting.........I have it in MP3 :) It's called Fairlight.

  • waaaaaaaaaant upload it on megashare or soemthing then giiiieef pl0x ^^

  • Guys, I have Midi for Fairlight music theme:

    byte-to-byte copy

(luckily inner format was compatible with Wham Music Box music editor)

  • Why didn't you use your sword in that last screen?!

  • You can't kill the monk with a sword. You need to use a cross or a potion bottle.

  • Woah, I didn't know that there was a secret door down in the pit. And I've never seen the skeletons before. Thanx a lot! I've made a video walkthrough. It's the first time that I could made it. Now I finished what I wished to do 20 years ago^^

  • I was used to playing the 48k version. I remember reading in Crash or one of the other mags a review when the 128k version came out about extra screens. I haven't fully explored this game so there may be other new screens to discover. I will check your Fairlight video.

  • I liked to play this game and loved the music. Thanks for the memories.

  • I used to try and jump over the castle walls by putting loads of objects in a row. Unfortunately it wasn't possible! Glad you enjoyed it mate!

  • Do you know if this music was composed specifically for the game, or is it older than that? Thanks.

  • The music was written for the game. It does have that old feel to it though.

  • This game puts any modern shit in the shade. Go fuck yourself, you fagott!

  • Well said! If his mother will let him fuck himself.

  • He probably does it behind his mother's back anyway!

This game is a classic. The way you can manipulate the environment to suit yourself. Never done before or after on the speccy!

  • Notice how much it is faster than c64 version.

  • I checked that out and you're right. Pretty sluggish. It only speeds up when there's no baddies on screen. The speccy version was annoying with the black screen change over at first, but you did get used to it and didn't really notice it after a while.

  • How do you enable joystick in the game?

  • I have just dug the manual out and dusted it down. Joystick: Fairlight can be used with Kempston compatible interface joysticks. The usual joystick movements will allow you to guide Isvar around the castle, and the fire button will allow Isvar to fight. All other functions are used by pressing keys as above.

  • Game controls: Y-P UP & RIGHT, H-ENTER DOWN & LEFT, Q-T UP & LEFT, A-G DOWN & RIGHT, SYM/SPACE JUMP, B-M FIGHT, X-V PICK UP, CAPS/Z DROP, 1-5 SELECT OBJECTS (5 POCKETS), 6/7 USE OBJECT SELECTED, SYM/0 RESTART GAME, SYM/SPACE PAUSE. Hope that helps you out!

  • Are you using an emulator to play it?

  • Ya, its the EmuZwin version 2.7.

  • It would be done through Control by making sure you click on Joystick On, or through joystick and mouse configuration and selecting your joystick type after clicking beside 2 Joysticks. You would also need to plug your joystick in before running the emulator. I cant be sure if it will work as Im not able to try it out but I hope it helps and it makes some sense. If it doesn't you can always ask the guys at worldofspectrum(dot)org.

  • Ya i tried all that, ill ask the guys over there, thanks mate.

  • Okay mate, sorry I wasn't much help to you.

  • Its cool bro, you have been a great help already with your various walkthroughs.

    Thanks mate.

  • The world may know

  • coz its shit ,i had one of these and i snapped the fucker in half, funny thing it was only half mine

  • So did you return the other half, as you ought to ?

  • Why does the screen keep turning black? :-/

  • The game always did that. Not sure why it took a second or two to draw the screen. Other 3D games didn't.

  • The OC remix is good; but not as good as Fairlight. Mark Vera oc btw.

  • Your talking bollocks!

  • I'm afraid he's right. It's the 48K version. The 128K version has much better music and can be found on YouTube with a quick search. Sorry, dude.

  • Whoops! YOU'RE right, Spinny. My bad.

  • I know I'm right...lol! I might be short-sighted but even I know the difference between 48k and 128k.

  • I shall cut off my penis forthwith.

  • I have a copy of "FAIRLIGHT 1.a. Prelude: The Light Revealed" (for the 48K Spectrum) for sale on E-Bay. MINT condition. Check it out.

  • Ohhhhhhhhh seguramente mi juego favorito del spectrum!! qué buenos recuerdos! gracias por poner este video!

  • Soy feliz que usted gozara el video!

  • Qué bien me lo pasé con este juego hace tropecientos años! :)

  • ¡Es un gran juego pero bastante difícil!
