Hi... I love your video's and saw this one and have a question. The whickness... inside the handle is...thin, as I now saw on one of virtuovice (another knife-buff) video's where he put it through an x-ray. Do you know this and still feel that it is a very good (survival-type) knife or that for sudge tasks one should go for the the F1, who has is really full tang??? Looking forward to your answer with kind regards from Peter in Amsterdam (Holland)
My Idun is an absolutely wonderful camping knife, but must concur with virtuovoice when he demonstrates in his deer skinning video that for such a task, due to it's oval shape and smoothness, it tends to slide around in your hand when slick/wet/bloody. Beautiful blade shape and overall balance, though.
I LOVE my Idun. It's much sharper than my F1 for some reason, and I've REALLY tried to get my F1 sharp with all kinds of compounds and stropping. As you've pointed out, the sheath sucks BIGtime. Other than that, it's a superb knife. My A1 is my other alternative. A small and a big are the best ways to go. I would LOVE to have Hedgehog make me a custom, but only if it's affordable.
I wonder if you can help me here... I am looking for a knife just like the NL5 to start my bushcrafting, but are ther any other choices? F1??? Is there any equivelent in Extrema Ratio? Cheers
When I bought it, Fallkniven had to sen me another sheath because the sheath was already cut through by the blade... my 2nd sheath is being eaten pretty quickly. As already said on another comment, you can get a cricket sheath for about 79$ fpr this one at JREindustries.
@Equip2Endure i also have the same problem! tell paul to start cranking out some more man! ill buy one too! big demand for this knife.... tell him its in his best interest and all that!
Excellent choice. Now, between my Entrek Javalina and my Muela Kodiak, this little knife is the best one both for feeling, comfort, small and huge jobs, firestarting and for look and quality.
But the sheath is not that good...Little IDUN easily slice through the leather even when paying attention while you put it back into the sheath.
Picked one of these up on the bay for $200 shipped. Just received it. Absolutely gorgeous knife. The blade length is 1/8" longer than the F1, and the belly is about 3/16" wider as well. The sheath is already starting to fray a bit exactly where yours is, unfortunately. Truly a shame, considering the quality of the knife itself. If you wanna let me know about any custom sheaths from Hedgehog or anybody else, I'd appreciate it. Looking forward to beating on this knife. gotoran@gmail.com
@ayokay123 , Hedgehog make a great Fallkniven Idun Sheath! He has not made any in a while, now it's like a special order sheath. I got to get one myself. I think Paul wants to make it more molle compatible, just shoot him an email, tell him Adam wants one too, if enough people send request he can make up a batch. Take care,
Love the Fallknivens, but they are just too expensive. Try a Kershaw Bear Hunter ($20) instead, with Aus8A Stainless. Absolutely beautiful, like this knife, but literally ten times cheaper.
@HammockerSam , I got that Fallkniven on a trade, the northern light series is pricey. I will look into the Kershaw Bear Hunter, thanks for the suggestion.
Man that's a cool lookin' knife! I don't have any experience with convex edge knives. I know you haven't had it for very long but how hard is it to sharpen? Is there a specific way you have to sharpen in order to keep that convex edge? Keep the great videos comin' Adam!!
@truecallin depends on you actually, some argue that convex grinds are the easiest to sharpen, others would argue against that. the nice thing about the fallkniven convex grinds is that a leather strop with some very fine stropping compound used every use or every other use of the knife will keep it shaving sharp with very little care.
@truecallin Yes, it can be a challenge to sharpen. That's why I take it to the knife store to sharpen... you can also use a leather strap or some fine grit paper.
Very nice series on small upper end knives. Changing gears: What r your thoughts on the Becker BK 11 and the ESEE (rat) Izula??? For small blades do they stack up against the more expensive offerings?
@drumgodtim, WELL! Let me tell you, talking with Ethan Becker last week, he has a new knife coming out that is a Becker Necker Blade and an Izula handle. A Becker and RAT... the BRAT. Should have a sneak preview in an up and coming video!
@1PATRI0T a great alternative is the fallkniven f1. almost the exact same blade but with a thermorum handle (similar to cold steels kraton, but lasts longer). i found my f1 at right around $100, less than half the price of the idun. also they are offered with a zytel belt sheath, or a leather, friction hold dangler sheath. i have the zytel and i dont like it so much, i prefer the leather.
@camikins772 That's because the zytel sheath is a loose/insecure grip. Fallkniven could have done better with it. I have both, and the leather friction hold sheath is TONS better. Hope it lasts.
@ayokay123 I agree, I only have the zytel sheath and it is very loose. I have a custom leather sheath made by acflutes.com for my F1. Its set up so you can carry it vertically, horizontally, and by drop loop, for either right or left hand draw all in one beautiful design. Also you can have him make it in any color you want. A little pricey, but way worth it.
@camikins772 Ok, I have the regular F1, the F1 with a custom elder burl grip, and the Idun. If I had to pick one knife that I like the best, it would probably have to be the F1 with custom wood grip. The regular F1 is superb, but the thermorun grip totally sucks for me. It's not only too narrow for my medium size hands, but the thermorun gave me hotspots very quickly because I had to hold it tighter to keep it from torquing. The Idun is more comfortable, but also too narrow...and expensive.
Thats a fair amount of cash but no doubt it's worth it. On the site I get my blades it goes for £247.95 however they also list a Damascus version for... (are you seated, you should probably sit down) £1161.95!!!!! £247.95 don't seem so bad now does it. X-D.
While watching the series you could easily tell that this knife was the best. I have a knife that I use for hunting that is made in Oleon, NY and they use a similar sheath. The one exception...they put a kydex holder inside the leather (the blade sits inside the kydex) and it has held up great. Very little wear shows on the sheath or knife and I have had it for 7 years. Be safe out there and thanks for sharing.
im looking for a good fixed blade survival knife and was wondering what you would suggest?

I Norway, Idun is the name of the most famous Tomato Sauce and Mustard.
Good knives are made by companies that you have never heard of.
Helle, Brusletto, J.Adams and the list goes on....

@LuisCorrula , just did a test in a f1 and it did great.

Thanks for your comment! When i saw the NL5 it was love at first site. Did you feel the last part of the handle a bit slicky?
Have you ever tested a small Extrema Ratio survival knife?
LuisCorrula 1 year ago
@LuisCorrula , my idun was great, no issues. I have not tried the extrema. Ratio blades yet. I have had a few requests.

@inkey2 , If you are looking for a large camp knife I like the Becker BK-2, for a smaller bush crafting blade the Mora ranges from 12 to 35 bucks.
