The only reason I wouldn't hit first is because if there were witness there and they confirmed that you hit first you could get done for assault. I know even if the guy was the instigator, the cops would be looking to who threw the first hit. I prefer to detect when they are going to hit you, block it and then go all out and knock the shit out of them. Once they throw the first punch you have the right to hit them back as hard as you want as self defense.
most people that street fight actually suck at boxing. If you have alot of confidence, arent afraid of getting hit, and have any boxing skill you cant beat 90% of the toughguys who think they can fight. If you are afraid of getting hit you will lose every time. He will be beating your ass while you look away or try to run. Getting hit in the face dont hurt that bad most of the time. Have you ever been mugged by someone who knows what they are doing? The first rule of having a deadly weapon is to never lose control of it, I.E, never put the gun within reaching distance or your intended target. I do agree though that getting in someone's head is the most effective form of combat.
I don't know what the law is in the different states in the U.S. but in the UK if you throw the first punch technically you've committed assault. However, the police might let you off if they find out the guy was threatening you. Then the guy in the video makes some very silly suggestions that gullible people might try out - like grabbing the gun. As for those saying they don't go looking for trouble but they're ready for it, even the worst thugs and perpetrators of violence say that every time.

ok i've been in martial arts for a bit now and i have a question, i'm 6"3 , maybe taller, and im about 250 pounds, my problem is i never hit first, i have a strong jaw and i usually get hit first the reason i almost always do this is because of my stature and the fact that i'm bigger than most people but alot of people seem to want to test me because im patient and i just want to know when is it "ok" for a bigger person to throw the first punch?

I guess it's all based on how you where raised to act towards violence. I learned real fast that if it seems like your going to have to fight it is far best to throw the 1st punch. I've escaped harm once by much older and taller thugs. I got socked HARD in the jaw while trying to take off on my bike. addrenaline rushing, I slid off in one motion and rose into an uppercut. The fight ended there (might have crunched his teeth etc). He allowed me to continue to hit him a few more times smack in the face and drive him back. I got back on my bike and left after an italian lady yelled stop. swear this is not an exageration. i had a perfect day. the skinny white kid prevailed.

@djpacoherte Exactly, but if its a one on one, personally I would never hit first, never attack from behind and also never pull out a weapon, two reasons for my last point, pulling a weapon is disrespectful if he is weapon-less and also if you are more experienced in a weapon there could be a good chance you could kill your opponent which could result in inevitable consequences, non-the-less i still do agree with Nick, bursting at an unexpected time is a very effective and useful move.

Have you ever been mugged by someone who knows what they are doing? The first rule of having a deadly weapon is to never lose control of it, I.E, never put the gun within reaching distance or your intended target. I don't know what the law is in the different states in the U.S. but in the UK if you throw the first punch technically you've committed assault. However, the police might let you off if they find out the guy was threatening you. Then the guy in the video makes some very silly suggestions that gullible people might try out - like grabbing the gun. As for those saying they don't go looking for trouble but they're ready for it, even the worst thugs and perpetrators of violence say that every time.

It doesn't matter how tough you think you are. You risk alot on taking the 1st punch on purpose. Both people get in trouble now a days if the laws involved. I was raised to throw the first punch if I felt I was going to be in a fight. If you don't know the person who is challenging you why assume the risk of him say slipping on brass knuckle and smashing your face in? I don't go out looking to fight and don't instigate them, but this won't keep everyone out of a fight so act accordingly.

I've only thrown the first punch on one occasion and that was because i could clearly see that he was going to throw a punch on me and i was just faster, and even at that the only reason it wasn't a huge deal was because he was my size. I guess it's all based on how you where raised to act towards violence. I learned real fast that if it seems like your going to have to fight it is far best to throw the 1st punch. Now a days it don't matter how it starts since both parties get into trouble with the law anyways. To end it on 1 punch is usuallybest for all involved just dont go farther then needed.

I would usually prefer to defuse a situation, but I came across situations where it's just impossible and a good punch might have made things different... I've escaped harm once by much older and taller thugs. I got socked HARD in the jaw while trying to take off on my bike. addrenaline rushing, I slid off in one motion and rose into an uppercut. The fight ended there (might have crunched his teeth etc). He allowed me to continue to hit him a few more times smack in the face and drive him back. I got back on my bike and left after an italian lady yelled stop. swear this is not an exageration. i had a perfect day. the skinny white kid prevailed.
