  • I've never really took the time to really understand what off side is until today when I decided to watch this video.

Basically, the way I understand it now is Forward who wants to kick a goal must have at least 2 players, 1 Defender and goal keeper between himself and the goal in order to kick a valid goal.

Am I correct? If not, please let me know where I went wrong?

    Thank you.

  • @miles2057 nope... it is offside when the attacker whos going to receive the ball its after the line of the last defender on the other team at the moment when the pass occurs... if the attacker receives alone coz hes faster theres no problem with that or if the the ball bounces from a player of the other team its not offside either...

    hope this makes sense...

    peace...

  • @engendrox Thank you for clearing that up for me,Engendrox.

Peace to you too! : )

  • ACtully number 2 isnt offside because it touches the keepers right hand glove after it was headed by djourou playing gallas onside

  • @barcaboy0102 It doesn't matter.

  • @TheFraz13 hmm okays :\ i always thought it did thankyou for letting me know :)

  • @barcaboy0102 the keeper touching it makes NO difference the key time is when Djourou heads it. THAT is the touch that counts and at that point Gallas is offside. When I was a boy (35 years ago, there WAS a rule "playing onside" that meant if a touch was made by a defender the offside player was played onside. That went LONG ago.

  • Both of them were offsides cause I know a lot bout soccer so the second one is offsides

  • first one offside , second one isnt

  • It isn't "offsides." It's "offside."

  • the second one isnt offside? the defender is behind the scorer when he headers it?

  • this rule makes no sense, it's confusing. Get rid of it. Higher scoring games means more entertaing games. Duh ????

  • @CodyZamboni Getting rid of it would completely degenerate the game. With no offsides attackers would be free to mark and hassle goalkeepers, and so long balls forward would become the norm. Tactics and game flow would be awfully disrupted. A total mess!

  • @landovers I'd expect that teams would have to react by keeping a couple of defenders in the box at all times. It would be impossible to defend the middle of the field. So instead of long balls, teams would just dribble it up the field with ease until they got to the box. The game would look more like hockey.

  • @CodyZamboni dear god, how fucking dense are you?

  • I am new to the game so please excuse. So, in the first example, there are two player offside? Correct?

  • @jdbaron25 yes. When the ball is kicked/headed if you are past the last defender of the opposition you are offside so the 2 of them are

  • @jdbaron25

yes, but only if he is interacting with play, ie if the 2 players are not touching the ball or blocking the goalkeepr then it is fine

so if both of the players didnt touch the ball and if it still went it, then it wouldve counted as a goal

    :)

  • In the second goal, the player wasn't offside because the ball came off of the goalkeepers hand.

  • Seems like a completely ridiculous rule - why the hell should the attacker have to WAIT for defenders to get in position before trying to score? If the defenders are sleeping, how is that the attacker's fault? No wonder Americans hate this game. How stupid.

  • @usamericanz because if this rule wasn't there, a forward could stand as near goal as he would want -- and just kick the ball in when it comes to him....it's the same thing in American Football where you have a line of scrimmage -- or in rugby

  • @adi87tya, what's wrong with that? there's a GOALIE, isn't there? In American Football, there is no goalie, so trying to compare the two sports does not work, sorry...

  • @usamericanz Yeah but think about it...even with a goalie, if I could have two to three attackers permanently stationed near goal, it would render the goalie practically useless coz he wouldn't be able to stop anything...

In American Football, the concept is the same -- a player is "offside" if he is on the wrong side of the line of scrimmage when there's a snap...so offsides exist even in American Football

  • @adi87tya And in fact, soccer (or Association Football) is the original form of football, all other types of football, like rugby, sheffield, gaelic, australian rules, American, and Canadian football originated from soccer. Look it up. American Football actually derived from a form of football played in England, which was similar to rugby. Basically people used to kick the ball until someone decided to pick it up and run with it, and that became a new game

  • @adi87tya, the American Football offside rule doesn't apply once the ball is IN PLAY...and in soccer, the ball is essentially always in play. I just don't understand why a player has to wait for a defender to get between himself and the goalie before trying to score. It's asinine. The opposing team has 11 players...if they can't figure out how to get some of them down by their goalie to help prevent the other side from scoring, how is that anyone's fault but their own???

  • @usamericanz because the ball's always in play, it's more difficult for the defense in soccer than in american football --- which is why you need an offside rule as it exists right now. If a forward can just run ahead (because forwards tend to be faster than defenders in general), then it just gives an absolutely unfair advantage to the attacking team.

  • @usamericanz Remember, you're not throwing the ball but kicking it -- making it much more likely for a forward to receive passes than in american football....try to play a proper soccer game with 9-11 players with no offside rule....the scoreline would be ridiculous...it would be a lottery with scores like 21-20 or something like that. The best team would never win, it would always be whoever had most people stationed near goal.

  • @usamericanz Exactly, why is one team penalized for the failure of the opponent? There is no offside rule in basketball and we do not have games where players sandbag around the goal. It is just so European for game rules to prevent real excellence over an opponent. With no offside rule, teams would be responsible for performing effective defense or suffer the score against them.

  • @pmpjr as a big basketball fan, that statement is just stupid. basketball is a game of 5 on 5, where players play both offense and defense. sure it's technically allowed if one player just stations himself under the basket, ready to receive a lob pass for an easy layup.... if that team is willing to play 4 vs. 5 on defense... which is idiotic by the way, you will lose if you do that.

in football/soccer as well as ice hockey, you have defensive and offensive players. that's why there's offside.

  • @pmpjr Most of the times an offside call isn't a mistake of the defense. Have you ever played the game? Defenders usually move up all the way to the middle line to force you to go back. I played forward for a long time and defenders are trained to set you offside, e.g. you position yourself, wait for the pass und suddenly all defenders move forward and you are offside. They practise that. And it forces you as a forward to watch and think and be creative.

  • the other guy had his arm extended forward lvl with the receiver and even so its too close to call so either way screw the offside rule in that sinario!

  • hell hell dick

  • what the hell hell you

  • eat a dick

  • theres no second to last oppent so he is offside good call

  • Thanks for the examples!

  • He wasn't sure if it had touched the head of either Arsenal player (thought it had touched the goalkeeper's hand only), which would be required to give the offside. So he kept the flag down.

  • the second clip is like the AR's NIGHTMARE!!
