I was privileged to be one of two guys in my Mekong Delta outfit to see Hope's show at Bayonet Bowl, in 1971. He was hilarious. The part of the show that wasn't shown to the folks back home was spot on about the food, the enemy, and the pot smoking. Martha Rae made one of her last appearances there. Not only was it memorable, it provided another connection to my late father who fought in the Pacific in WWII and who went on to fight in Korea.
I had the honor to tour VN in 72 for the USO, my final day met Gen. Fred Weyand who
I reconnected with years later in Hawaii. That tour began my life in Asia and I'm still here.
I went on to work with major music acts over the years but my proudest memories are of sitting on hospital beds of wounded soldiers, doing shows all over VN from Phu Bai to Quang Tri,
Da Nang, to Vung Tau and many more. Thank you Mr. Hope for sending me and thanks to
all the men and women for serving. cliff in tokyo
I was fortunate to attend the Bob Hope Christmas show at Korat AF Base in 1969. Bob and his show brought a little bit of America and home to thousands of American service men and women. Thank you Bob for your love and devotion to our troops... I will always be greatful.
You can't be a "true American" anymore, because the left will say singing "holy night" its to 'religious." we can't have religious in our armforce says the liberal american.
I was there -984 land clearing 1970 Dean Martin Gold Duster ,GOD BLESS A REAL AMERICAN!!! In the words of George Jones who gonna feel his shoes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a true American hero, got to see him in Long Binh 1969, along with Mis World, Connie Stevens, Dean Martins,Gold Diggers, and Neil Armstrong. I can stil see the smoke and his Ch-47 as they came in!!
I can't remember where, but the stage was FIVE loading pallets, and the curtain was an olive drab tent. The rain hit somewhere in the middle, and ended the show at 30 minutes, BUT, There was Bob Hope
@Merlin5x5 Tony call centre, it does work if you work out how to copy and paste after w. But look at the date on your post mr popular ? I mean the 1st of January, a proud day for fun, family, friends, I bet your wife was loving the hot white, the kids were happy not being shouted at and the rest, the more you post the more sorry I feel for you, its OK to be lonely but for how long, call centre work has brought you down, faster the the TT
it's pretty moving to watch all those soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines sing "Silent Night".
Bob's words in the epilogue are amazing - what a class act! he didn't really pull any punches - it was a hard war, and one that wasn't going well, and he didn't gloss over it. but he knew they had an important job.
yes, God bless Bob Hope...one of my favorite Americans. Hmmm , yes, 25000 troops in country... and in a couple months an end and home for almost all troops. No military defeat... only politcal when a miserable Democratic congress led by the likes of Bella Abzug cut off funding for the South. If Nixon hadn't had Watergate the B-52's would have gone back in... Kissinger sold us out by virturally all troops with no trip wire forces as are now in Korea...
Bob Hope was a Great American...formerly born a British citizen. He was a showman, a comedian, but most of all in my mind, a humanitarian who cared about the American soldiers, sailors, airmen...he was a great one. Thank you. He is now with the LORD and receiving his just rewards.
Thank God he was there for my generations' service in Vietnam. The young fellas now get live video and connect with their families and that was just not the case in 1970. Let's bring them home, again.
Bob Hope did very good, he had been part of the USO since World War Two, and he made the attempt to show up to every armed conflict where the USO was invited to entertain the U.S. Armed Forces. Right before his death the United States invaded Afghanistan this 21st century, and Bob Hope issued an apology that he was too old to attend, and passed the torch of leadership in the USO, and passed away shortly afterward at age of 100-years in the year 2003 (born year 1903). Good job, Bob Hope.
Who could have imagined back in 1972 that 3 years later South Vietnam would be under the control of the North Vietnamese? It's no wonder that place is so messed up today.
Met Bob Hope once in Minneapolis at the airport and I thanked him for his great loyalty to the troops over the years. I was in VietNam and I know what he meant to us then. God Rest his soul!
In 1972 December 25th I was at Than Son Nut air base and i was in the hospital group at the Mac V compound 4th row center stage right i was the only one who could not walk. so i was ordered there by the order of our base commander a two star general. " I want this in a wheel chair and on the bus to the compound.................NOW!
this was the time when America was Great and each one was a true Patriot! Thank you so much for sharing this Video, i wish the people of this generation could learn something from it and start acting like a true American instead of being constantly preoccupied with being politically correct
@leffeblonde08 What are you talking about? These brave soldiers were involved in a very unpopular war in Vietnam and the country was extremely divided over it. The military was basically treated like crap and even spit on when they returned from their duty overseas. This time was not the good old days. A few years later the last Americans to leave this hell hole were standing on a roof desperately trying to get out as the communists were moving in. Love Bob but am not nostalgic for this time.
What a wonderful blessing to the ill treated troops that were in Nam. To be recognized and appreciated as they so deserved. Bob Hope was a special man who tickled everybody's funny bone.

What a tear jerker for me. So many young men so far from home in a strange place. Wish we could stop all the conflicts but evil never sleeps.
God Bless for Bob for his dedication to the American serviceman over the years.
