Ah yes... Robotnik. Twas the name for 'Eggman' in the American cartoons. According to the comics, this makes sense.... Robotnik was destroyed and his soul was put into the robotic Eggman. I say it makes a lot of sense because it uses both names, which are familiar to those who like Sonic X and to those that like SatAM or AoSTH and the comics. It doesn't matter if you don't like it. It will make sense to someone.

I think it's time to clear up all the talk of 4Kids removing Maria's death. The English version of this episode implies more than once that Maria died. While I admit that Gerald and Shadow's statements that Maria was "taken away" from them could be interpreted as her being captured and imprisoned, keep in mind that Maria is constantly referred to in the past tense, Chris states at one point that it's impossible to "bring Maria back", and her corpse is explictly shown at 9:02.
