It's band in a box all over again, it just uses your voice instead of a mouse :D I can't believe M$ has the cahonies to release something like that to the public.
Man this software makes the best singers sound like they have never spoken before. I really dislike software like this. If you want to make music automating is not the way.
it actually does show you the chords it picked, yes, and you def. don't need perfect pitch to use it.. still not sure how useful it'd be though..
Seems to have really cool programming in its backend, the algorithms that analyze your vocal and the huge variety of chord structures it can come up with (tho it often veers into Albert Ayler-esque chaos lol) but the front end seems like it was made for people who think Barney the Dinosaur is too hardcore.
I'm not going to lie, my favorite part was the old school Dell.
I'm not familiar with Songsmith, either: I assume it's a Garage Band for Windows of sorts, but, well, that looked a little more limited. Your impressions, Jay?
I don't think it's really comparable to garageband.. if you search "microsoft songsmith" on youtube you'll see more about it.. their official demo is pretty comical.
It's a lot of fun to play with and kinda fascinating to see what different chord progressions and arrangements it will put to your vocals, and cool how quickly it analyzes your singing and reacts to it.. but the instrumentation sounds really crappy, like a MIDI song from an old Geocities page.. if you want to make decent music you'd have to export a midi file and use it somewhere else.. and most people who download this won't know how to do that, I imagine.
Thanks very much for the reply and the info. As someone who follows your blog, I'm not surprised to hear excellent analysis of something as usual, but I appreciate it on this as someone who's considered sinking some time, sweat, and tears in the form of debit card payments into re-rigging my computer to record.

Unless it shows you the chord progression it picked to accompany you, it's pretty useless to musicians unless you have perfect pitch.
Looks like a quick way to create a huge glut of mediocre music.

Yes, it shows you the chord progression and you can manually tweak it.
