I cant believe these bastards... they are very proud because they had "roughly" 900 fatalities from 41,000 million passengers transported, do they really think the people killed or their families give a shit about their safety record at all? if you happen to be one of them its over! you have only one life so its not like you are gonna take the chance. 900 fatalities in 1 year is just too much, even 1 is still much cause each life is unique, but these bastards just see them as stats numbers
Well you have to consider a couple of things: first of all what keeps an airplane in the air is the pressure of the airflow which goes over the wing and produces a suction above and a pressure below the wing this pressure is messureable and is called the indicated airspeed. The IAS is a pressure of the airflow over - continue below -
the wing and is expressed in nautical miles. Now you have to consider, that the air in 36000ft has about only a fourth of the density it would have in sea level. So the true airspeed, which is the actual speed against the air in a standard atmosphere in sea level is much bigger than the IAS another thing that has to be considered is the wind. which can be blowing in any direction on the aircraft e.g. directly on the front or on the tail wich actually - continue below -
changes the grounddistance of an airliner which is flying e.g. in a jetstream dramaticly, since these winds can reach speeds of well above 100kts. wehn you consider all these things, you will finally get the speed which is aproximatley indicated on your GPS. However this speed is not relevant for the aerodynamics of an airplane: Imagine a aircraft which is having a wind directly on the nose with 100kts: - continue below -
the ias will be 100kts but the groundspeed 0kts, wich would be indicated by the gps. that´s why you have to relay on pitot tubes and not on inertial navigation systems. however it´s hard to say if it was the pitot tube or not without haveing any evidence, like a flight data recorder. Without those nobody can say what caused the accident, even if you had wittnessed it with your own eyes.
I can't believe a multi-million dollar aircraft relies alone on mechanical pitot tubes to physically measure speed through the air! For instance, I have a TomTom satellite navigation device in my car. There is a function where the device will measure the speed of the car via gps signals. I have checked this against the car's speedometer and it is very accurate. Why can't these mega expensive high tech aircraft have similar systems?
There must be more to this accident than pitot tube failure!
