Ummm... yeah we are. I watched a documentary on it in AP Bio. This scientist traced the origins of mankind to Africa then retraced the steps of the ancestors of many cultures. White people are white because we became cave dwellers and had little exposure to sunlight, black people stayed black because they were in the sun, Native Americans are related to Mongolians, and africans were actually the first to inhabit Australia... or something like that... if I can find the title I'll post it.

"Slavery by Another Name" Douglas Blackmon, Doubleday 2008. Documents the use of work prisons owned by Northern corporations like US Steel, where Southern judges would send blacks who changed employers without permission or were loosely called 'vagrants'. Whippings were a common form of punishment. So, yeah, the 13th Amendment ended slavery just like Prohibition ended all alcohol consumption.

I'm sure that mattered in the lives of the hundreds of thousands of human beings forced to do unpaid labor on behalf of for-profit corporations because their hands were 'too soft' to be those of a real laborer (an actual crime on the books of some jurisdictions). I'm sure the 13th Amendment gave them solace in their hearts as they spent their lives victimized by their society and the very legal system that was supposed to uphold their rights.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime where of the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction." EXCEPT as a punishment for crime. That loophole provided the very thing in Blackmun's book.

yeah, actually, only about 5% of Southerners did own slaves. The rest were yeomen, which means that they worked their own land and relied on their families for extra help.

rape and slavery two very similar things in a sense. in both the person is pretty much claiming owner ship over the other, saying "hey i can do this to you, you are mine". blacks in africa enslaved other blacks and sold them to the europeans and Americans. either way the slaves that were sent to the U.S. would still have been slaves, just not in our great nation, and their descendants that are around today would not be alive. i do not defend rape or slavery, but the past is the past.
