I've experienced a -50 windchill and -40 air-temp, and you don't go outside in that nonsense unless you absolutely have to. Much less with exposed skin. I've had frostbite, but nothing like this.

i got my frostbite in jan 4, 2009, right about the time you did. my feet looked just like this and i had daily dressing changes with silvadene cream. (silver sulfadiazene?) do you have residual callousing and sensation loss?

@feracat07 This was during a part of his life when he had a drinking problem. he walked home from the bar during a -50 degree storm and passed out on his deck. luckily somone found him before he died of hypothermia.

Also he has since then quit drinking entirely.

geez i'm sorry for you.... what's a frostbite? i live in a tropical part of the world (singapore) and i didnt get those cause yeah its tropical. the only time i actually thought i had one was when my hand stung and my dad said its frostbite but there were no marks at all :/

@ismailblgps97 It's when the skin (somewhere on your body, doesn't matter where) freezes. In severe cases the skin dies completely and there's irreversible nerve damage. The skin will go yellow-ish, then black. And that's when you know it's dead and the doctor has to amputate.

So say you get REALLY bad frostbite on your hands (kinda like this guy, but he was lucky) you could most likely lose fingers or your hand. Frostbite around your feet, you can lose toes or a foot.

I had frostbite once, but it was NOWHERE near that bad... My hands were greyish-purple and they itched really bad. I felt like I was wearing REALLY tight latex gloves on my hands. Then they peeled. Overall, it was no worse than a weird looking, itchy sunburn... My best wishes go out to your brother. I'm glad he sobered up... That shows that good things can come from bad experiences.

I don't quite unterstand why they didn't just evacuate the blisters and leave the epidermis there. It's dead, alright, but when you put on a dry dressing for some hours it adheres to the dermis and provides protection. If you then cut the excess, it should't increase the risk of infections (rather the opposite) and reduce pain a bit.

Man I got this exact degree/type of frostbite in my right hand a year ago and got the same procedure done and I healed pretty good Id say im 95% back to normal. Hate to say it but ur finger nails r going to fall off but they will grow back, the skin on ur palms is dead and will fall off and ur gonna have stiffness in ur fingers. Im also feeling a bit more sensitive to the cold air of winter and my hand is slightly disfigured but no one can really tell unless they look closely. Good Luck to you.
