Sammy outdid himself once again! I thought that nothing could touch his "Mr. Bojangles", but this is also in a class by itself. Sammy was still developing his craft even so close to his death. He was on the Telethon the following year, but could not sing and had a raspy speaking voice if I remember correctly. His comment at the end of this leads me to believe that he knew that he was in the early stages of the throat cancer.....he talks about his mortality....
Wow, this is great to see! I remember reading in Michael Crawford's autobiography that Sammy loved PotO and especially loved to sing "Music of the Night", and when I read that, I wanted to hear it, and now I have. This is great; he would have made a phantastic Phantom!!!!! Thank you so much for posting this. :)

What key is this? I know in the song as written the high notes ("soar" and "be") are A flats, but I don't think he's singing A flats here. It doesn't sound too low, though. The song spans a full 2 octaves, so the low notes aren't lower than written. Can anybody with a better ear than me tell me what's happening in this arrangement?
My favourite singers ever (based on their vocal abilities not popularity)- Sammy Davis Jr., Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Dean Martin, Frankie Lymon, Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby just to name a few.
And he sang this with throat cancer?! I cant imagine how he felt physically let alone singing that well with a throat riddled with painful growths. That's a TRUE entertainer! Giving all to the end, for his art! Thank you Sammy!
Did you know that Sammy was in an awful car accident that smashed his face and body and cost him an eye? Which is why he had one glass eye. Very soon after this performance he was diagnosed with throat cancer. I remember seeing this live and it is the best performance of this song i have ever heard. Sammy had a soaring tenor voice, great performance abilities, was a wonderful tap dancer and a fabulous vocal impersonator. You should go dig up some albums like Sammy Davis Live at the Sands.
Of all the singers that had sung The Music of the Night. I love the way he sings the word Soar, he gives strength to the word . Bravi Sami. You are missed Entertainer. Throat Cancer or any Cancer must be cured in your memory.
The singing AWESOME...AWESOME...the meaning of this song also outstanding...let go of earthly restraints and formalities...release your darkest dreams, your fantasies, your senses...and live as you've never lived before...WOW! Sammy a class act to give credit to Michael Crawford and Andrew Lloyd Webber
They cutted out right where you could se he made thumps up. He made a little fun thats all. I just dont think we understand what he ment with that expression. Nothing bad i think.
God Bless You! I lost my vhs tape copy years ago and have lomged not only to see this amazing Sammy Davis Jr performance, but to share it with those I love and who think would appreciate it as much as I do. Thank you sincerely for the time and effort to post this.
I remember when this aired; Sammy really loved the show--he saw Michael Crawford several times in L.A. and was obviously moved and inspired by Michael's performance.
I taped this on VHS tape when it originally aired (hadn't seen it in a few years). Many, many people have sung this song. I've never heard it sung with so much emotion.
I put this song on my favorites list almost a year ago. I read a post that was almost identical to your's at that time. His performance moves me every time I watch it. Being 31 years old and a person that enjoys all types of music I just hope that the emotion that Sammy had isn't ignored by the new generation of musicians. God bless T.C.
I remember Sammy being at the Jerry Lewis telethon singing this song- my mom went nuts over it ran out bought the cassaete and now I'm hooked on Phantom-thanks to this wonderful man!!!! Thanku Sammy you were a wonderful performer, RIP!!!
The greatest talent of the 20th century. Remember this was performed about a year and a half before his death and he was still unbelievable. God bless you, Sammy.
I've wanted to see this again since 1988! Sammy Davis Jr sang this song better than anyone I've heard!! Does anyone have a better video? Thanks for putting this one on Youtube!!

I have Sammy on tape opening night of Phantom in LA.
He was interviewed following the show and he said
"IT IS DYNAMITE". He truly loved the music and story this performance was done with deep love. Samme, You are still Dynamite!

I love me some Sammy David Jr. but... I don't love this cover. I'm sorry :-/
He tries too hard to be dramatic I think.
But he's most certainly an excellent baritone vocalist. And no one can compare.
