I have my doubts that this opera was really performed with such a crew: a female choir instead of a boys choir and a woman as soloist. In 1680? At that time women usually were not allowed to act on stage at least not in royal opera houses.
@rhxthm This was more of a bend on his biography in order to add drama into the film. Dying in bed is sympathetic enough, but for the sake of drama, they used this 'death scene' as the end of Moliere's days.
@drmgrl11 This was only 300 years ago though. Perhaps the castrati appeared in the Renaissance or Medieval music...I hope that is true so this movie can be that much more accurate.
@drmgrl11 French opera was different from Italian opera--only the Italians used castrati. In one of the previous scenes, Lully tells Louis that if he authorized the production of French opera, males would be baritones & basses, not the "excessive" tenors of the Italian operas.
Great scene. More and more people appear in the background to show the growing influence of the Church in Louis XIV's life over time (they,re all priests). The end of Lully and Moliere's work made that. We can also see that the room at the end of the opera (when we see the king with all the religious men) is a lot darker than before it, showing that the end of the work of those two artists ended the happiness present in Louis's life. All of this is speculation :)
Why in the death scene is Lully old and yet the women are as young as when they first met him Can we not allow women to age the same as men The scene looks absurd
@janafeir i think it's more like the people who did the makeup for this scene screwed up. he was only 55 when he died so we can assume his wife could have been anywhere from 40-50 (she looks barely 40 here but hey, its a brief shot) and Julie was way younger than him, she could be like 30 here for all we know. but you're right, it does look absurd.
@janafeir I think its first of all because women got married at a very young age those times. Then it's the renaissance beauty ideal that a woman should be young and beautiful like an everlasting picture. We sure have the aftermath of that nowadays. But this movie stay very close to that what we know of the renaissance.
@janafeir might have been to show us how weak he became, and how tormented he might have been that the king would snob him and all, like you know, its often said that worries make white hair. XD

A fitting end for a true scoundrel.

au moins Molière est mort sur scène. Quoi de mieux pour un artiste?

Something about the crazy wild hair and arm waving Lully is doing reminds me of Johnny Depp.

@janafeir In the eyes of men, women they love never change. They always look as beautiful as they did first time they met.
