whats that supposed to mean americaisback? the clash and joe and mick went on to do major mature work from this era into the 90's and counting. so not exactly correct. me thinks vaccume cleaner sucks up budgie..
first live gig i ever went to was the clash at the Qeensway hall in Dunstable about 1978 i think, i was 15, what a fucking explosive night that was, they sang Dunstables burning and the place went mad there was a mini riot the police turned up they banned punk bands after that, great memories of great times.
Ditto on the geezer below, about they were terrible live; at 52 and having now lived through many musical changes this maybe true. but in 77 and 78 when they were gigiing and gaining momentum ..it really didnt matter ..it was the attitude and energy. Absolutely brilliant - I just hope no one confuses this lot with the shite that did that album 'London calling' and the shite that came afterwards - let's remember them in their prime please.
@NeilThompson30 you're an idiot. london calling is a great drawing in of all their blues, rockabilly and rock n roll influences. aren't people allowed to develop in your sad little box of a world? . joe would be laughing at you and your three chord lifestyle. He moved on they moved on embrace it...
@pitchforkcustom I know what the influences of London Calling are - I'm not an idiot! - they didn't develop - I love the blues, rockabilly and rock 'n' roll - but I'd like to remember the Clash as the group they set out to be - a Punk Rock group - Joe wouldn't be laughing at me at all - the blues, rockabilly and rock 'n' roll IS a three chord lifestyle!
@wildpie you missed the point mate! this is one of the first gigs by the clash and people didnt know wot to make of them no matter wot colour they where
look to the left leg of joe. Is always moving! I have like 5 dvd live of the clash and that leg is always moving man joe strummer is really feeling the music.
@viejaescuela77 yeah, it's like Joe's characteristic feature, besides he's amazing voice of course!!! :D in fact, everytime that i listen to The Clash i can't avoid moving my leg like him!! IT'S CONTAGIOUS!
This band is tops with me when it comes to punk rock, at least back when, and it was back when that punk music of this. sort wouldn't make the top 40 playlist, Neither did Susi Quatra, who besides Clash didn't get the recognition they deserved here inVancouver Canada anyway! Thanks for posting
Paul Simonon is the coolest bassist. Saw the Clash 4 times from 1977-1980, loved them, but - and I will get flamed for this - but they were *terrible* live. They'd be awesome for 2 songs, fall apart for 2, get it together, disintegrate again. Painful. But exhilarating.
Saw them myself a few times. You must have been unlucky as they were great when I saw them. One of the best was at Demontfort Hall Leicester (1978 I think), that rates as the best gig i ever went to, alongside Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers (at Northampton and Max's in New York, both in 78). Also saw the Clash at Brixton in their second phase (new members) though they were not up to much at that time! Overall though, a great band!
@RamonesKaraoke I wasn't there, but Lydon reckons they would play too fast and burn themselves out in a coupla songs. Simonen was a cool bassist. Their first album with headphones on when you're stoned is awesome. Well it was 20 years ago :)
@RamonesKaraoke Disagree. Saw them 4 times, 3 different tours: Santa Monica Civic and Hollywood Paladium. Every single concert was great, start to finish. Maybe it depended how wasted Topper was.
I disagree with you, saw the Clash 3 times in the seventies and they were brilliant, one of the best live bands ever, full of energy. Wish i could re-visit those days.
Hopita...do you know where this gig is? I can't believe its the UK, Clash crowds were never like this!? they were usually mental, this lot are asleep...until the end.

Mullery, wherever you are hiding. John Wayne Gacy??? I can tell you like to wank yourself to those words. A big JOHN on the downstroke, a serious upstroke on the WAYNE, and then going to town on GACY up and down up and down up and down! (in your case, 2 inches). Hahahah! Everyone in the world knows the English are faggots. I mean, the French have their food, the Germans have their machines, the Italians have their mums... So what's left for you British? FAGGOTISM! You just help to prove it.
Brits have: Rolls royce, SAS, james bond, the clash, buckingham palace, thames river, the royal family, Mi6, Joe Strummer, Aston Martin, sex pistols, if your a fan; the beatles, Andy McNab, Stonehenge, Rolling stones, spitfire, HMQ Elizabeth, Palace of westminister, westminister abbey, Bangers and mash, fish 'n' chips, English channel, BBC, guiness, darwin. And now, when ever something else comes to mind, illbe sure to tell u!
Yes, and when Strummer wrote the lyrics (for the song 1977, on which that is a quote) Elvis was still alive too. He just meant that their generation couldn't relate to their music anymore, cause those old heroes had turned into decadent rockstars.

Sorry kids, but Joe S sounds like he needs his wooden dentures retooled before he freaking swallows them! And for the record, they were never the biggest band on the planet, either. Dunno where that stupidity came from. They were just the Clash; they had a few good albums, and some awful hits like Rock the Casbah and Should I Stay or Should I Go. In answer to the second song title, Yah, you should definitely go! Hard to imagine a guy asking that question anyway... Hahahahah!
I didn't know what you meant by that before, but I saw that previous comment about 'biggest'. I would never lay such claim. they were never biggest, for sure, but they sure were the friggin coolest for awhile. Objectively (ha), I would say it would be hard to put 10 bands ahead of Clash for most important bands. Pistols aint one of them--though they had one great album. One. I wouldn't put 2 or 3 ahead of clash. Uh, not the stones, haha.
Yo Elvis. Yeah, I know about the Clash fans' passion. I really am just trying to kick up some dust here on YouTube. I know how great they were and how much they meant to some people, so please don't get me wrong.

Yah, sorry for being an iconoclast, but I'm serious. I'll admit that London Calling is one of the great albums in rock history, but the band was pretty lame. By the time I saw them live in Chicago in '79, Joe S was wearing white levis, and band had gone completely to seed. & at no time were they even close to being the biggest band on the planet. Keith Levene probably left the Clash so he didn't have to skip around like a fool. PIL made more great songs in two albums than the Clash ever did.
haha, all good, but clash far more than you give them credit for. I am pretty sure the pistols played their first gigs at strummers condemned building of a home 101 whatever street, I can't remember...without that non fact, if they make one of the greatest albums ever--what more do you want of a band? Them to send you hooker and eightball ;)
PIL? Sorry, they didn't cement Johnny as 'all time greatest punk' for me. My most obnoxious declaration of most overated is stones and ramones.
Clash, Rope, London Calling, Sandinista. come on, that's not a bad library. Most bands aren't good for more than three or four relevant, listenable albums--much less double and triple LP masterpieces.
WhaTS PIL? i wasnt alive durin this period and ima music major most of my classmates can say this band was ahead of its time buy a good margin EVERY TALENTED WELL PUT TOGETHER MELODIES M.V.P LYRICS only shitting thing is sometimes if not most of the time where not good live and very bad rodie crew
another interesting thing i find looking at this.. this i prior to being the biggest band on the planet ! right ! playing to a couple of hundred, but they have the stage presence straight away. they look like hardened pro's on that stage. not a band who have hardly played together on the same stage .a band heading for the land of legend..looking at shae you could think that gig was the next week not years and 1.000s gigs later ! ! the only band that matters ! !
londons burning shot in 77. just after they signed for CBS. i know the date as the first thing the did was when they got their sign on fee was buy a new PA and it was an "orange" as you can see it just behind mick to toppers right. so this just prior to the white riot tour looking at the back drop they were waiting for the other two screens from the art dep't at CBS. . .this is summer 77,,so good chance its the anarchy tour. one of the very few dates that actually happened. or art college london
Where is this? Looks like it might be off the Pistol's Anarchy tour where they played a few universities. Check out the hairstyles and only one guy pogoing?
Its from a documentary, Punk in London (I think, I have so many of the bloody things they get mixed up in my mind), I have it on VHS. It is available on DVD I've seen it, and includes other songs plus an interview where the band are all aggressive and moody to the German Interviewer who sounds like a bit of a mug, probably down to his English.
i like this good early stuff. judging by the back drop its the first tour or an early gig in the capital. must just be after the CBS signing, cos that looks like the "orange" P.A. they bought with the signing on fee.. they sound ready to take the world on. speed was the drug of the punk movement, it shows ! !
It's a good thing they did not have ENERGY DRINKS back then ... Joe seemed a little hyper ... made him the man I love and respected ... gave his words creditability ...
"It's a good thing they did not have ENERGY DRINKS back then ... "
The boys did a lot of stimulants back then. If you know what I mean.
Listen to the fall 1977 European shows. WR went from 1m56 to 1m36. Insane. They kept speeding up the tunes until they couldn't play them any faster. Then Tommy Gun and GEER.
I loved all clash releases except, radio clash and the album with "this is england" with just joe and paul ... it was all remarkable. still stands the test of time. When you say "newer stuff" is that Mescaleros ?
you are all very sad if you are that influenced by what the clash did or didnt like !!!!!!! you morons dont even know whether to like elvis or not!!!! ... it is permittable to like and appreciate more than one genre of music you know
CAN you explain the lyric "no elvis, beatles or the rolling stones". Is it meant to be an insult ? Or a statement about the lack of talent in the year 1977 ?
where is this footage from?

you are a good sport, rock on my brother.

Are you serious?

i hope he or she is, if not , gone fuckin' nuts
riotdave 2 years ago
you can't be serious. that would have to go to the rolling stones.
elvis316 2 years ago
Yah, sorry for being an iconoclast, but I'm serious. I'll admit that London Calling is one of the great albums in rock history, but the band was pretty lame. By the time I saw them live in Chicago in '79, Joe S was wearing white levis, and band had gone completely to seed. & at no time were they even close to being the biggest band on the planet. Keith Levene probably left the Clash so he didn't have to skip around like a fool. PIL made more great songs in two albums than the Clash ever did.
dawncrk23 2 years ago
haha, all good, but clash far more than you give them credit for.
My most obnoxious declaration of most overated is stones and ramones.
elvis316 2 years ago
Clash, Rope, London Calling, Sandinista. come on, that's not a bad library. Most bands aren't good for more than three or four relevant, listenable albums--much less double and triple LP masterpieces.
elvis316 2 years ago 2
WhaTS PIL? i wasnt alive durin this period and ima music major most of my classmates can say this band was ahead of its time buy a good margin EVERY TALENTED WELL PUT TOGETHER MELODIES M.V.P LYRICS only shitting thing is sometimes if not most of the time where not good live and very bad rodie crew

another interesting thing i find looking at this.. this i prior to being the biggest band on the planet ! right ! playing to a couple of hundred, but they have the stage presence straight away. they look like hardened pro's on that stage. not a band who have hardly played together on the same stage .a band heading for the land of legend..looking at shae you could think that gig was the next week not years and 1.000s gigs later ! ! the only band that matters ! !

londons burning shot in 77. just after they signed for CBS. i know the date as the first thing the did was when they got their sign on fee was buy a new PA and it was an "orange" as you can see it just behind mick to toppers right. so this just prior to the white riot tour looking at the back drop they were waiting for the other two screens from the art dep't at CBS. . .this is summer 77,,so good chance its the anarchy tour. one of the very few dates that actually happened. or art college london

Old Clash songs are the best (77-79), just like the whole first punk wave (76-79)

Clash loved young elvis but still hated his bloated old version
Nothing wrong with that
I love old clash hate newer stuff, don't make me a cunt
angrysamoan666 3 years ago
I loved all clash releases except, radio clash and the album with "this is england" with just joe and paul ... it was all remarkable. still stands the test of time. When you say "newer stuff" is that Mescaleros ?

rendybullseye 3 years ago
CAN you explain the lyric "no elvis, beatles or the rolling stones". Is it meant to be an insult ? Or a statement about the lack of talent in the year 1977 ?
