OK Guys... Ginko is actually pretty young and has white hair and one eye for a reason. If you want to know the reason keep watching, there IS an episode that explains this stuff.. Actually Im pretty sure it's the next episode :)

I don't know if i agree with self sacrifice for atonement. in this case the sin wasn't even his to atone for. he told the father of the daughter that there would be no way for him to stay. she took upon herself to go out and kill the boar god.

self sacrifice should only come in defending someone else.

Then again, if you think about it, it takes his constant attention to maintain the balance. If he is unable to do the job then it is his responsibility to find a suitable replacement. Strange things were happening because his control is waning. So in this case self sacrifice was the only option left. Not for atonement, but to pass on the position to one better able to keep the balance.

but i like ginko's option better. he was making an apprentice and he was totally thinking the mushi master mountain god would pass on the knowledge to him.

if you step back for a minute it almost seems cowardly that he would sacrifice himself. the kid was completely prepared and willing to become the mountain god.  but the mushi master decides he can't take it and leaves the villagers to some strange mountain god.

@shakaama Can't really agree with you.. First of all I too find self-sacrifice usually a coward thing, but not in this case. Its true that this child could've replaced him in the future, but it would be a heavy burden to be left on the kid's shoulders And lets say the kid succeeded in replacing him, but who knows what's going to happen when the kid grows old, who's going to replace him? I think the old man wanted a permanent solution to the problem, since he feels it his fault to begin with
