AMAZING! FYI, Repin is performing the original version of the 4th movement! at first shostakovich wrote it like this, but Oistrak begged the composer to give the soloist a break between the cadenza and 4th movement to let his fingers rest hahah
@jghamm i read it somewhere in the program notes for the concerto and plus in a regular (revised) performance the soloist wouldn't play the beginning bars of the 4th movement :)
@fishwithoutwings i do not own that recording, but if she plays at the very beggining of the concerto, then she is playing the original. but, if she plays after a few measures of rest while the woodwinds play the intro then it is oistrak's way. they're the same with that minor difference :D
Amazing performance! The final mimics in such a energic way (like only Shostakovich knows how) is 10th symphony. Amazing concerto, and bravo Vadim Repin for such virtuosity on the violin!
it is the original score written by shostakovich. oistrach sad shosty he was too tired after the cadenza so they decided to give the first theme to the orchestra. just for the violinist to take a rest. obviously that was no problem for repin !!!
this version very diferent , and the orchestra paris

I saw Vadim Repin in Chicago and the performance was stunning. He is wonderful you can not take your eyes off of him while he is playing.

My favorite concerto!!! Want to play it next year!!! Bravissimo Vadim!

He's crazy , he played the original version written by shostakovich !
Look at the opening of the last movement, he played at where Maestro Oistrakh asked Shostakovich for a break !

I have Hilary Hahn's recording of this concerto; do you know if she plays it the original way or Oistrak's way?

@fishwithoutwings *excuse me, i meant if she plays at the very beginning of the 4th movement.

@BBRENTTAGHAPP
Thanks! She plays without intro. It's nice to know she plays it the way Shostakovich originally intended.

Repin is definitely short of the
talent of David Oistrakh.
Compare the cadenzas.

on this level of violin playing, you don't compare, you simply listen. there is no room for it.

Eccezionale, peccato che il video e l'audio non siano sincronizzati.

are there different versions sanctioned by shosakovich/ from Lynn Harrell
lynnharrell 2 years ago 3
yes. this one is played rarely because it gives very little rest to the violinist b/w the cadenza and the final movement.

does anyone know what year this concert was? It looks to me like about 10 years ago?

now i understood why he took so slow all 3 movemets
For 4th movement haha
Yes, young Repin was better of course

exactly right! Oistrakh begged Shosty for mercy in the form of a 20 second rest in between the candenza and the last movement.

Interesting. I didn't know that. I wouldn't blame any violinist for making such a request, though.

I didn't know this. Anyway I prefer the orchestral introduction.

You just write crap and slapstick
You don´t have any criterion
It is so simple , If you don´t like
it don´t see it, and Don´t hide
behind your language ...
Brunildilla 2 years ago
Slapstick?
No encuentro por ninguna parte el comentario despectivo por mi parte. Sabes lo que es un tanque?

Tank,
I think it is a marvelous and great rendition...
