EADS said they didn't want any paint from a specific plane and wanted better visibility in the air. It is now painted as Yellow 3 in the standard gray scheme.
The landing gear was woefull but do not let that distract you of the fact that the Me-109 is an awesome aircraft and a worthy adversary of the spitfire. Its great to know that this one was repaired after the crash and it saddens me that people would blame such a fine pilot for a mechanical failure and try to ruin his reputation!

the BF-109 is notorious for it's narrow landing gear causing accidents. you can't just put anyone in this plane, you need to practice landings repeatedly to get a feel for the plane.

Like, they don´t have to be flyable, they are still awesome. Sure, flyables are a bonus, but you can think they are as cool even if they are not flying, huh?
There are a respectable number of static examples with non-airworthy components. I'm counting another 10 ongoing airworthy projects (plus or minus) in addition to the 5 that have been flying in recent years. (Black 6 not included in that 5) Just because an Me109 is intact and parked in a museum doesn't mean that it's flyable. Why don't just fix that? Do a little research on the costs of getting an airworthy restoration together and then compare that to a rare German type.

Airworthy examples total 5 globally, which is a blessing considering the rarity of parts and extreme rarity of original engines in usable condition. When you add up the costs of building the airframe and hard-to-find engines, the numbers are astronomically higher than the average airworthy P-51. Any accident is significant for this aircraft, especially one which results in engine damage--potentially grounding the aircraft permanently.

It was serious enough for expensive major repairs, including teardown of the wings and engine. The wing assembly and gear mounts have to be checked for damage and fixed. And I believe I've read that the prop digging into the pavement and ground created some shock-loading to the engine. So the entire engine has to be checked for damage. It's been two years since and I believe the aircraft is still being repaired.
Pretty cool video man.. The Bf109 was very difficult to land due to the odd/narrow angle of the landing gear.. I've read somewhere that the Luftwaffe lost more 109's to accident's than to actual combat damage.. Landings could be especially treacherous... But with a good pilot a fine fine aircraft that served through the entire war and beyond.. Thanks for posting this..

the other plane was an Me 262,early jet fighter.Luckily Adolf didnt get them til very late in the war & in far too few a numbers to make a difference!

Zeros had non sealing fuel tanks, no pilot armor and therefore couldn't take hits without blowing up. I'd rather take my chances in a heavy American plane anytime. Except in a turn, the American planes outclassed the Japanese planes.
the first 100 or so was made by Messerschmitts the rest 29,900 was made by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke and the reason it crashed was because of its landing gear it was narrow and hard to land to even the most experienced pilots more planes were lost on landing and take off than in actual air combat

Our company has the honor of building machines in one of Messerschmidt's old assembly halls in Neutraubling, Germany. There's even a little museum section in the lobby to keep the history alive...
Actually there is couple of Bf 109's in their original condition. The BF 109 G6 in Tikkakoski, Finland is in 100% original condition and I believe that it's flyworthy plane even it's in permanent static display.

Messersmith Bf109 ... it has 2 names Me-109 and Bf-109 . british and americans called theme Me109 . you can see that on the P51D20 version's Gyro gunsight . its texted as ME109 .

No, just the five new examples with one being sold to Germany. There is also an original Me262 that is under restoration to flight status sometime in the future that will used modernized versions of the original engines.
The designation Me is incorrect. All Messerschmitts are designated BF because the manufacturer was Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. Technically there is no such thing as the Me-109.
An EADS spokesman said that an investigation was underway and it was believed that the damage to the aircraft was relatively light. The aircraft was lifted back onto its undercarriage using airbag technology and was then wheeled back to dispersal. This particular Messerschmitt is a hybrid airframe, using the fuselage from a Bf 109G-10 and the wings from a Spanish-built Hispano HA-1112-M1L Buchon which originally had a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. No, Phoenixsquad. It was classified bf early on, until the company was renamed after Willy Messerschmidt. In Luftwaffe documents, it was referred to as both bf and me, sometimes even in the same report.
I am afraid that is incorrect. I spent weeks of my life with the BF109 and I wrote my exams about it. I know that there where official documents (to be honest ive seen alot of them) where the BF was classified as an ME109 what is incorrect. I have talked to Ex 109 Pilots, to owners and even to Mercedes about the engine. I have also read a scanned document where the Reichsluftfahrtministerium clarifies that there is no ME-109 Model.
The BF-109K-14 was the last produced Model. I havent seen any evidence that it was ever called Me. Its correct that all other aircrafts where named Me but the Bf stayed Bf till the end of the war. Even Wikipedia says "its often referred to as me109 what is wrong".
I couldn't tell anything from the later part of the video, but from the pics of the 109 after the landing gear collapse, it looks totally salvageable. Unless something happened that I couldn't see, she should be back up and flying again soon, if not already.

Pretty cool video man.. The Bf109 was very difficult to land due to the odd/narrow angle of the landing gear.. I've read somewhere that the Luftwaffe lost more 109's to accident's than to actual combat damage.. Landings could be especially treacherous... But with a good pilot a fine fine aircraft that served through the entire war and beyond.. Thanks for posting this..

"Spoilt" is the past tense and has been progressively supplanted by "spoiled" in the US but is still commonly used in England.
Both are tenses of the verb "To spoil". Hope this helps.

@brillwills they were reliable and powerful, the only problem was the stupid landing gear. The american fighters were crappy! Just think of the bad turning rate they had. They were chanceless against Zeros or ME109s!

Zeros had non sealing fuel tanks, no pilot armor and therefore couldn't take hits without blowing up. I'd rather take my chances in a heavy American plane anytime. Except in a turn, the American planes outclassed the Japanese planes.

the first 100 or so was made by Messerschmitts the rest 29,900 was made by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke and the reason it crashed was because of its landing gear it was narrow and hard to land to even the most experienced pilots more planes were lost on landing and take off than in actual air combat

Actually there is couple of Bf 109's in their original condition. The BF 109 G6 in Tikkakoski, Finland is in 100% original condition and I believe that it's flyworthy plane even it's in permanent static display.

When Messerschmitt AG was formed in 1938, existing models such as the Bf 108, Bf 109 and Bf 110 *officially* retained the designation "Bf".
But, as I'm sure Sofa will agree, German pilots tended to refer to the aircraft as "meine Me", not "meine Bf".

Messersmith Bf109 ... it has 2 names Me-109 and Bf-109 . british and americans called theme Me109 . you can see that on the P51D20 version's Gyro gunsight . its texted as ME109 .

No, just the five new examples with one being sold to Germany. There is also an original Me262 that is under restoration to flight status sometime in the future that will used modernized versions of the original engines.

The designation Me is incorrect. All Messerschmitts are designated BF because the manufacturer was Bayerische Flugzeugwerke. Technically there is no such thing as the Me-109.

An EADS spokesman said that an investigation was underway and it was believed that the damage to the aircraft was relatively light. The aircraft was lifted back onto its undercarriage using airbag technology and was then wheeled back to dispersal. This particular Messerschmitt is a hybrid airframe, using the fuselage from a Bf 109G-10 and the wings from a Spanish-built Hispano HA-1112-M1L Buchon which originally had a Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. Any Questions left ???

Landing gear failure is common with the Bf-109. It is unfortunate but it is not a big deal and does not cause much damage.

No, Phoenixsquad. It was classified bf early on, until the company was renamed after Willy Messerschmidt. In Luftwaffe documents, it was referred to as both bf and me, sometimes even in the same report.

I am afraid that is incorrect. I spent weeks of my life with the BF109 and I wrote my exams about it. I know that there where official documents (to be honest ive seen alot of them) where the BF was classified as an ME109 what is incorrect. I have talked to Ex 109 Pilots, to owners and even to Mercedes about the engine. I have also read a scanned document where the Reichsluftfahrtministerium clarifies that there is no ME-109 Model.

The BF-109K-14 was the last produced Model. I havent seen any evidence that it was ever called Me. Its correct that all other aircrafts where named Me but the Bf stayed Bf till the end of the war. Even Wikipedia says "its often referred to as me109 what is wrong".

I couldn't tell anything from the later part of the video, but from the pics of the 109 after the landing gear collapse, it looks totally salvageable. Unless something happened that I couldn't see, she should be back up and flying again soon, if not already.
