But power chords are the bottom three notes of a barre chord. Ska chords are the top three notes. Fair? I was only trying to break it down.

Ska versions of things are rarely (if ever) worse than the original! This is no exception.

The only song that has had a ska cover done in which I preferred the original was on Reel Big Fish's cover album this past January, they made Poison's "Talk Dirty To Me" sound so much un-like the original. But even with that example, I don't think it was necessarily worse, I just prefer the original.
