Hang in there, Mom. You're doing just fine. The fact that you maintain your sense of calm is a HUGE victory. "First ..., Then ..." and Visual schedules & icons are a critical part of our routine and have made ALL the difference. They find comfort and security in knowing what's to come. However, even with all the planning, we still run into issues when his schedule changes from what he was expecting. (& the answer isn't always as simple as turning around & going home)
You just don't know unless you've been there! This is the story of my life! EVERY situation has to be thought through and planned for in advance in order to avoid these meltdowns. When you asked him if he wanted to go home, he was so far gone that you could've said anything (other than the playground he was expecting) and his knee-jerk reaction would've been "NO!". People will tell you to force him, make him do what you want, but they TRULY don't understand that doing so only makes it worse.
I noticed alot of people are unsure what there children have, all these terms have caused more separation & confusion. I feel the simple fact is these children are well ahead of there time, they express there needs in a new way, because the needs of these children are different to the needs of the parents old views of childhood. Let them make the choices, treat them like equals, don't teach them, let them teach you. They learn without words, they know life in a totally different reality to ours.
i have autism and about 3 weeks a go i was thinking about putting all my upside down then i did that and my mum was like WTF and i had to do it XD i like being random
@sufeewi there is no need for language like that, can't people have a civil discussion about anything now?
...one displaced comment, and some people go off on one!.....and I am not speaking out of place, I am the uncle of two autistic boys!.........keep it calm!
Did you tell him you were going to the park? Did you show him a picture schedule or a PEC? I am just curious. If someone just announces things to me I get discombobulated. If I have time to get used tot he idea then I am ok. I just wondered how high functioning he is. By the way, I like his name. I have a cousin named ( its a very popular Jewish name and so I guess it should not be shocking that I have a cousin named that LOL)
@Sitheis2009 Ezra has been variously diagnosed with PPD-NOS, ADHD, statiuc encephalopathy, and classicly autistic by various developmental psychologists. So you can take your pick.
i understand perfectly my son is 11 since he was 2 year he bites and is very agressive worst then yours he runs to the street his diagnose with adhd odd and pdd so is hard really hard....
My boy is 4 yrs and we have this problem,i understand what u go through he has an MDA for autisum in jan.His techers at school have to give in as this could get so bad he starts fitting and he's sick after.I have managed at home just, but it's harder for other people to understand him.
@crazyrockysback Although we're currently against a wall when it comes to a school for Ezra he has shown a lot of progress in speaking clearly and slowly so that others can understand him. All thanks to the SonRise program we've been running.

I hope everybody is aware of the changes of the diagnosis criteria for autism. Asperger's and PDD-NOS will be merged into a single catagory.

@TheBlogOfJon For the newest edition of the DSM. DSM-V will change it and some may lose benefits. Just to let everybody know.
