Great job JIm, i have been wanting to learn that song ever since i heard Mike Seeger do it, if i can figure it out half as good as you have done i will be happy.
i love your playing and i love this song, but at 25 seconds i cant help but laugh at the little quagmire head nod. i sat here watching it for about 5 minutes laughing.
I gave double C a shot. i was back in open G within an hour.. i had no idea what i was doing in double C lol. i think i'll just have to stick to three finger picking.
@wildjimbo I've still got a LOT to learn in either style, on the right hand atleast, so i think i might better try open C in a couple more years so i have some sort of fighting chance, haha. For now I'll have to stick to a tuning my left hand knows.
I love bluegrass, too, but this is "old-time" clawhammer banjo, not bluegrass Scruggs-style picking. But both are forms of Appalachian stringband music, so it's all good. :-)
Hey, sorry for so many posts. They were supposed to be replies to other comments, but YouTube keeps putting them on the top like a general comment....anyways, you inspired me to start playing the banjo again. Thanks!
I just wanted to add--you don't hear a ton of singing with just a banjo accompaniment. This was....hypnotic I guess... It just draws you in. Such a simple old-timey tune that just stirs you up deep inside. Awesome man! Thanks for posting it.
That's absolute perfection, that is mountain music at it's best!! I dabble in 3-finger pickin, but I don't have a middle finger anymore(don't ask!) can I still play clawhammer without that middle finger??
I have the opposite problem...I lopped off my index (also don't ask!), and the doc put it back on. It works, sort of, but it's clumsy. I keep it well out of the way, like I am pointing, and use the middle finger to claw.
I've heard faster and 'harder'(which I'm sure he can do too), but that was pure banjo music right there - - as good as it gets! He's just got that mood or feel about it.
I'm 62 and plat banjo ukes and autoharp. This fantastic video has inspired me to buy and old clawhammer banjo, restore it and learn to play. Jimbo is the best. Clive
Wow you can really pick! Great job and great song

@jessupar It's always amusing for me when I go back and watch myself. Glad to have shared that amusement with you.
As for double c, it's a great tuning for 3 finger too.

Absolutely. About half of all clawhammer players use their index. :)
