  • Like most Irish people in the 60's I was brought up with Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers singing all the songs that folks have posted here. I had the pleasure of see Tommy perform live in Co Armagh oh **years ago and his manner of singing and memory will live on."GOOD NIGHT and JOY BE WITH YOU ALL"

  • By God this is the VERY BEST version of this ballad. I'd fight you if you disagreed.

  • Of all the money e'er I spend, I spent it in good company.

And all the harm that I ever did,Alas! it was to none but me.

And all I've done for want of wit To mem'ry now I can't recall

So fill to me the parting glass Good night and joy be with you all

  • If I had money enough to spend, And leisure time to sit awhile,

There is a fair maid in this town, That sorely has my heart beguiled.

Her rosy cheeks and ruby lips, I own she has my heart in thrall,

So fill to me the parting glass, Good night and joy be with you all.

  • Oh, all the comrades e'er I had,

They're sorry for my going away,

And all the sweethearts e'er I had,

They'd wish me one more day to stay,

But since it falls unto my lot,

That I should rise and you should not,

I gently rise and softly call,

Good night and joy be with you all.

  • The Bard of Armagh is sorely missed . . . I was raised on The Clancy Brothers/Tommy Makem . . . I was so sad when he passed . . . and then I went to my pub, drank a few Guinesses . . . and played a string of Clancy Brothers/Tommy Makem on the jukebox . . . "I'll gently rise .. . and I'll softly call . . . good night and joy be with you all."

  • Though I am comparatively young I grew up with Tommy and the Clancys and his passing saddened me greatly. Though I hope that we can keep his memonry and music alive for many generations to come. My best wishes to Tommy's faminly and the Clancy's.

  • This is the very BEST version of this song...period. I had this album...original and in good shape....but my house burned, and now I do not know WHERE I can find this version of this song.

  • The album was called "Irish Drinking Songs" and is available on Amazon.

  • That is a great collection, but this isn't the version that is on that album.

  • I can't remember

  • As a youngster i was brought up with tommy makem and the clancey bros, one sticks out (Foggey Dew)R.I.P Tommy...

  • I discovered Tommy Makem over twenty years ago on a scratchy old LP I bought at a yard sale. I fell completely in love with his voice and style long before the record finished. I only learned of his death tonight, over a year later. It hurts to know that he is gone. My best wishes to his family and loved ones. Tommy has brought many hours of joy not only to me but to millions around the world. God bless him.

  • rest peacefully young tom...your voice will carry through the ages

  • tommy is my uncle. R.I.P tommy i miss u

  • God Bless you Tommy. Precious voice. x

  • Strong song, strong heart,

    strong love a passing not...

Tommy rides the sweet spring winds'

over the the green meadows high

and he's there in the lover's sigh

through the sorrows and the joys' -

    isn't it grand boys

  • go rabhaidh mile maith agaibh na clancai agus makem... agus slan leat tommy.

  • I miss my grandfather. we played this song at his funeral and he picked it out. I love him. IRELAND FOREVER. this song still makes me cry

  • We played this at my dad's funeral. He loved the Clancy's and he picked it out himself before he died. Means the world to me

  • this song .... it means so much

  • Play this at me wake.

  • A dhéanfaidh... Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam Tommy, thank you for all that your music has gotten me through... Please remember me when I pass so we may "deoch" a joyous glass

  • Tommy's gone??? At least we know there's good music on the other side...

  • Even though I was only 20 when I discovered Tommy, (I am 23 now) I quickly grew to love him and to treasure all of his music. His death effected me more than any death outside my direct sphere of association. He was one of the greats. But while death can take this great man away, it can never take his music away from us.

  • one of the best songs passed down through the generations and liam sings it very nicely

  • Tommy, we loved ye more than you'll ever know and we'll miss you more than we'll ever know, you were the best and the brightest and the world is a little dimmer without you in it...slainte, my heart

  • He'll be sitting up there in the top lounge with his bango going like crazy, glass of whiskey in front, big smile on his face and singing " isn't it grand boys, to be bloody well dead "

    R.I.P. Tommy

  • you were an IRISHMAN that with your songs and story telling made me appreciate my IRISHNESS.I am proud of you Tommy and i realy sad to see you gone ..keep the seats and the fire burning for we will see you again.

  • My own father and mother passed away a month after the music died. God bless all here. michaellee669@yahoo

  • Good night, and Joy be with you Tommy.

  • As an Orangeman i still loved to hear Tommy and the Clancy,s singing wither it be a good Irish song or a rebel song it's their heritage but Tommy will be missed he was the best.

  • I'm not suprised you like that stuff. I know quite a few Orangemen and band members, both yong and old who absolutely love Irish music, be it trad, folk or even rebel. Thanks for the comment.

  • Hola, que pena, estaba buscando una canción de él,"Ever the winds" al escuche la versión de "The Keltics". Me gusto mucho..... thanks and good luck.
