Drunk? Highly doubt it. Most pros (Scotty Nguyen being a notable exception) do not usually drink and play poker any more thank most other top professions drink at their job.

Big swings are to be expected, especially from the more aggressive players (like Hanson) and definitely in a more aggressive venue like online poker.

If you are familiar with Gus Hanson and online poker in general, it's not at all surprising that he goes from so much, to so little, to so much again. It's par for the course. It would not surprise me if he ended up rebuying 3 times, only to make it all back and turn a profitable day. It's just they way things go.

On a hand by hand basis, a lot of statistical variance (i.e. luck) was an effect, but over the long run luck plays very little part and pros will almost always make the cash.

Um, no. That is really Gus Hanson. That is a custom avatar (only pros get them) and Gus certainly does play online -- A LOT! That is where the majority of most pro make a lot of money these days.

Sometimes players can collude but not as much as your paranoia would suggest. It doesn't ultimately make a lot of difference to a skilled player.
