  • the song is TENDERLY. wikpedia: Tenderly" is a popular song published in 1946 with music by Walter Gross (1909-1967) and lyrics by Jack Lawrence. It became a jazz standard.

there are other videos of them doing this same arrangement, different improv.

  • dang! Where's the crowd? there should be thousands there enjoying this? Is it the camera angle or what?

Reminds me of that joke: what's the difference between a blues guitarist& a jazz guitarist? Blues guitarist plays three chord for thousands of people, jazz guitarist plays thousands of chords for three people.

  • two badass guitarist..

  • Two of the all-time greats. I would have loved Ted Greene to be on stage with these two.

  • is it always so quiet at tommyfest?? i dont understand why it would be.

  • because when you're in the presence of a musical genius, you tend to become speechless ;) lol...

  • no sorry by quiet i meaent empty, like hardly anyone there... looks like only 100 max

  • It's quiet because we live in a world where cheap disposable rubbish is preferred over true artistry. People want instant gratification, and so you'll see theatres struggling to draw crowds, while Vin Diesel movies make millions worldwide - opera-houses cash-strapped, while talentless three-chord merchants sell out stadiums - museums and art galleries empty and football stadiums full - thoughtful documentaries ignored in favour of insipid reality TV, et cetera.

    Sad, but true.

  • wow that is an old comment lol.

i dont know why people gave me a thumbs down, its just an observation.

anyway i totally agree with you, most of my friends and people i know are not interested in tommy; nor care about why i listen to him.

i love documentaries, to learn about things. i love to listen to music in its purest form. in some sense though RAP e.t.c is music, it means something to the people that listen to it. but theres hardly any true musical inspirations like tommy anymore

  • excellent observation... you pretty much nailed it in one paragraph..there is no money in the arts, but all the arts are a necessity..Art appreciation at a young age is vital... If you can grow up with it, you will hear the voice of artists who are the creative reflection of our times.. they take their own vision of darkness and light and explain it to the masses..they let us know the joy and pain of what is just around the corner.. nicely said.. DG

  • the head is Tenderly (written in E flat), but they probably play it in E. Martin Taylor is a jazz guitarist from way back - excellent work.

  • this cant be a fully improvised progression can it?i mean,is this a chord progression from a song, or a performance of the song itself?

  • They are working within the framework of the tune, reharmonizing and substituting chords. That's why you keep hearing standards played to this day. They are great vehicles for a zillion different improvisations. T'ain't noone worth his salt just doing the "original versions" anymore.

  • Their version is very reminiscent of the Chet Atkins?Leny Breau collaboration on "Standard Brands"... Mostly the feel and tenor of the piece... The bends and singing tone are very CA-like...

  • Also, as a performer myself - you have to realize that audiences are not all guitar heads. Maybe they just fired it up the previous tune, and the vibe needed was exactly what they did. Not everything in the scope of a performance has to be a chops display.

  • Tommmy and Martin are 2 grreat players. To appreciate this performance, you have toknow the standard "Tenderly" to appreciate what they are doing. It is off the cuff, and not as much of an arrangement in the fingerstyle genre as it is a jazz DUO. Listen to Martins improvised solo!!!

  • Taylor is the most skilful guitarist ever.

  • martin taylor is a maze ing.

  • I love TE and have seen him play live a few times. He is an incredible player but I have to say this song didn't do much for. Just not my cup of tea. Having said that I can still appreciate the quality of playing without having to bag either of them out.

  • what a spectacular duo

  • I just stopped reading ... if you're attacking TE ... you're have a genetic mutation at some level ... there's nothing bad to say ... if you could even come close to his gift and interpretation ... I would be the first to want to listen, enjoy, and share ... please post away ... or maybe consider closing your choppers ... why is there any negativity here anyways... sad ...

  • DG320, search for "the man with the green thumb" and "angelina" and "Tommy Emmanuel" almost everything you find will be the best you'll ever find.

  • syncopater999, as for his trading soul for energy, that's not the case i feel. he plays to entertain the audience, and he plays always based on how the atmosphere is - he doesn't play to a set list of songs. so if all of a sudden he whips into some fast paced licks, it's simply because the audience is wanting something more

  • guys youve got to realise that this isn't one of tommy's compositions, so he's not going to have all that great of a feeling associated with it. it would be like me playing Angelina ( a song he wrote for his daughter) and expecting myself to feel the love i have for a daughter (i have no kids)

  • I don't agree. You can love the tune/song as much as the composer/writer does since it's interpretive and subjective. I find this particularly true when playing/performing. There are songs I just love and get lost in and would hope I exude as much emotion as maybe the person who wrote that tune/song in the first. Maybe he just doesn't love "this" particular standard.

  • I can see he's a technically accomplished player, but from what i've heard so far i'm afraid i have to agree with grimobo. perhaps i didn't come across the right material, can someone recommend some good TE stuff?

  • guys guys guys.... taste isn't something you can quantify, i happen to think TE is a master, but my gran probably wouldn't...

    get over it.

  • I know where grimobo is coming from. Tommy is a superlative guitar player and can do anything on the instrument. This can be both a vice and a virtue in his hands. I am dazzled by his technique and often excited by his playing. He takes risks but throws in out of place licks in the middle of any tune. He gets carried away with speed and can lose the essence of the tune. Sometimes he trades soul for energy and loses me. I still admire him greatly just the same, faults and all.

  • I'm not attacking him, just observing his sparseness of feeling despite that astonishing technique. Well done that he *does* bring joy, as I'm sure all of you do.I'm just puzzled by his (and this has nothing to do with my own resounding lack of talent) absence of feel or sympathy for the tunes whose notes he hits so unerringly. Everyone's right about why I react this way. Thanks for contributing.

  • Not attacking huh? Let's just revue briefly...each time i come to this page, *THE* most banal elevator-type guitar muzak starts up... the leaden-fingered Mr Emmanuel... the geezer's v lucky to have such faithful fans... the man's a basic automaton and none of his playings have the remotest mote of soul or feeling or, come to think of it, understanding...

If that's not attacking, then as the old saw says, "with friends like you, who needs enemies?"

  • Wow!! Grimobo!! I couldn't have put it better myself!!!

Let me know when your own website is up showcasing your own alternative to your criticisms!!!

  • Whi that idiot Grimbo whose opinion is totally irrelevant anyway. Clearly he couldn't tell the difference between a pair of underpants and a G string!

  • Like everyone who's responded so valiantly on behalf of TE, I plunk a bit. I must say, the geezer's v lucky to have such faithful fans, none of whom sound the least bit robotic or soul-challenged but very technically accomplished yourselves.

  • I'm curious, is the reason that you attack Tommy, somebody that does nothing but bring joy and enlightenment to the world, because it makes you feel better about your own lack of talent. Or because you just didn't get enough attention when you were a younger spanker? (I won't say young, because, no matter how old you may be, you obviously haven't grown up yet)

  • I don't think one needs to be a guitar expert to rumble someone like Mr Emmanuel, but we're all experts so it helps. Emmanuel clearly has a goodly fan base so i'll pronounce you all 100% correct and me in the wrong. Oh, each time i come to this page, *THE* most banal elevator-type guitar muzak starts up. I trust this is a youTube background track and NOT the leaden-fingered Mr Emmanuel. There must be some accomplished guitar work that can be used and passed off as TE's strumming.

  • i've seen TE in my native OZ and i believe i caught him on a hong kong gig. yes, he does have a goodly array of soulful grimaces and much vibrato-type fretboard frippery. it doesn't seem to add much to the actual sound. but he would *love* that understated line about more soul etc in one note than others' career. his PR minders should nab that for some next album blurb. thanks for commenting back. YT is good for supportive feedback re-comments like this.

  • martin taylor is excellent and a real talent, but i've never understood emmanuel's continuing presence on the scene. he's got all the technique and all but so have many virtuosos. but that said, the man's a basic automaton and none of his playings have the remotest mote of soul or feeling or, come to think of it, understanding.

  • How can you possibly say that Tommy Emmanuel has no soul, feeling or understanding? Have you ever seen him live? In which case you would see that he puts more soul, feeling and understanding into one note than most guitar players can muster in a career!

  • Yes this song is "Tenderly" jazz standard song

  • LOL... check out the baby! So cute!

  • Yeah, you should hear Chet Atkins and Lenny Breau play it on Standard Brands.

  • 'Tenderly'.

  • I don't know about Martin's but it's not on any of Tommy's as far as I can rememer. I had heard it before this concert though...I think that it may be a 'jazz standard' that they gave their own treatment..

  • what song is this? can i get it from any albums of his? maybe from martin's or tommy's?
