  • HEY !! anyone ever accidently have their wrentch touch their alternator and battery post at the same time...DO IT i dare you lmfao

  • im gunna ask a dumb question so be ready . when would someone find themselves getting a shock from a cars electricalsystem. in other words i need to know what i have to do to get shocked in order to avoid it . also what parts of the car are known to shock people?

  • clap clap clap! Im an expert in 12v and 16v charging systems. You should check out my 07 WK. The frist wk with dual high output alts! You need to check out dc power alternator, its what I run. Crazy load from my system iv clamped over 400amps on my fluke337 from just 1 of my alts @ 2k and over 200amps at idle speeds. :)

  • thanks again Eric =) i got dragged into installing an alternator for someone monday lol this helps soooooo much, btw its a chevy silverado 2500 6.0l V8 engine, merry christmas Eric

  • Most people do not understand that you 80% of the time you will not need a alternator. Unless the stator is completely shot. The majority of the time it's the rectifier that has failed, these are dirt cheap and easy to replace. No need to fork out the cash for a remanned / new unit over a five dollar electrical component.

  • @Lokivoid Indeed but as a technician you often just want to get the job done so you normally end up replacing the entire unit to avoid a comeback. Thanks for your input.

  • Snap on trucks are like heaven man with everything inside there, even better when the driver isnt an ass. plus they blast the ac in those beasts. So nice to see one pull up on a hot day

  • @JSM1TH3RS Amen to that.

  • @JSM1TH3RS i wanna be visited by one cuz i wanna buy their damn tools

  • eric! can you make a video of the proper way to bleed a clutch i am having so much trouble getting air out of the system its a 98 s10

  • @frankduckit If you watch the video I did on replacing clutch hydraulics I show some methods for that. Good luck.

  • God, I wish R&R was this easy on my Trailblazer 4.2 I6......

  • @shaun4282 Yea some are more of a challenge than others.

  • Hey Eric, do you have vender like mac or snapon who comes to your shop to sell you tools? If so can you make a video of inside the vender's truck and what they have? I always wondered what that was like. Thanks!

  • @jet79637 I don't have one that comes to the shop but that sounds like a great idea for a video.

  • Eric, your videos are great!!! I can see one thing that might help out on your time in the shop. I always have my cordless drill with a wire brush on it to clean up my terminals and anything else that has corrosion on it. Also give a little Vaseline to my battery connectors. And before I start my vehicle I am working on I make sure that the battery has 12 Volts because if it doesn't have 12 volts it can ruin your brand new alternator. Hope any of this can help and don't mean to say anything bad.

  • @spangenbob Excellent points and suggestions, thanks for the comment.

  • Is automotive repair a dying trade???????????

  • @36theghost Good question, it's defiantly not the same industry it used to be but I think there will always be a need for people to repair things.

  • Great video, I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos.

  • @HondaHowTo1 Thank you, I'm glad you like them as I really enjoy making them.

  • hi eric,

Can you do a video on how to replace a timing chain tensioner ?

  • @ooo77 The videos I make are based on what comes into the shop so it's hard to fill requests like yours but I'll do what I can.

  • @EricTheCarGuy thank you, i appreciate the effort

  • Hi Eric,

years ago my Dad gave me a tip on battery terminal corrosion. He would pour a little boiling water on the effected parts which simply dissolves that powder residue. Then he would dab a little grease on the terminals and reconnect. Admittedly, this was on older type vehicles but, watching you trying to brush that stuff off in a modern engine compartment where space is at a premium brought it back to mind. Seems to work OK!

    Best regards. Phil.

  • @64460242 It works very well in fact, I've even seen new cars from the factory come with a little grease on the positive terminal. Thanks for the comment.

  • @64460242 you don't need boiling water. True it will dissolve that white powder (which is sulfuric acid). But you can do it easier by just dissolving some baking soda in water and cleaning it up that way ( which will neutralize the acid). Boiling water seems like it could damage something or burn you. Plus once the water evaporates the acid will deposite somewhere else (wherever the water goes). Not very safe.

  • @turkaljd Which in time could start a corrosion problem else where. Good point - thanks buddy.

  • @turkaljd You'd never get sulfuric acid to evaporate to the point where it becomes a solid. It's highly hygroscopic - you'd get an oily residue before anything else.

That white powder is lead sulfate, an acidic salt. It forms when sulfuric acid vapor creeps up or vents around the terminals and contacts the lead poles. Water just washes a somewhat acidic solution all over the rest of your engine bay - which could cause rust or oxidation of any exposed steel, iron or copper connectors.

  • wow, do you make good working on cars there??? because i worked at a BMW dealer for 10 years and i was making ok money.

  • @AE86HachiRokuGTS You can do pretty well based on where you work and the type of work you do, it's all relative I suppose.

  • @EricTheCarGuy - good to know, thanks for the reply. great job on the videos. BTW you would make a great mechanic instructor, you sure got the voice for it.

  • @cpepe22 Yea, take it to a tire shop it won't be that expensive to just have a tire switched over. It's VERY difficult to replace a tire without the proper tools not to mention it needs to be balanced when your done.

  • Eric, I've got a question, I've broken off half of a terminal on an airtek fuel pump, but there are enough threads for the bolt and other bits and to keep them tight. Is it a problem? Or can I just ignore it and use it. Because 200$ for a pump doesn't come twice.

  • @The18Jake Hard to say really but if the electrical connection is secure I suppose you could.

  • Thumbs up if Eric deserves an "I kick ass because my new shop makes my voice echo making me sound like a car repair god" award.

  • @jgm0411 Hahahaha

  • Another great video Eric. Did you get a new shop? I just noticed that place you're in is REALLY nice. I drool thinking of what it would be like to work on cars in such a place. Good stuff as always.

  • @youtubasoarus I LOVE working on cars in my new shop. I've got videos on the move over on ETCG1 if you want to check them out.

  • This guy is awesome.

  • Hey Eric, have you ever changed out the belts on a Toyota Sienna before? Apparently there's 2 belts & one of them has a plastic cover on it. I can't seem to find the tensioner for ether belt. You suppose the tensioner access is from underneath?

  • @Michiganborn1969 Not in recent memory. It might be a good idea to look underneath as I often find it's easier to change belts from that position. Good luck.

  • @EricTheCarGuy

Ok, cool thanks. I'll trying getting my fat a** under there but if I have to use jack stands I might not be able to do it in the garage due to the clearence. There's only inches between the top of the van & the garage door opener. Wish I had a shop something like yours lol.

  • Hello,Eric.

If there was enough slck, on the connections to the alternator, would you connect them, before dropping it in place? I would think that would save a few knuckles.

    Stay Dirty.

  • @Blargaldalien Sure you could do it that way, I just make this recommendation to make people aware that something might still be connected and it would be worse to damage a wire or connection when doing a job like this. Thanks for the comment.

  • Thanks, Eric.

  • your fuel gauge is broken

  • 91 acura integra only charging at 2.6 amps new alt on the way any chance diodes are stuck open bc it drains my battery to where i dont even have dash lights when i turn the key on?

  • @nextrider123 A charging system is greatly dependant on the condition of the diodes. There are 2 quick tests to help you determine the condition of the diodes. Set a DMM or DVOM to measure AC voltage. Check for AC voltage on the output wire. If there is 0.5 VAC at the output wire, then your diodes are bad. Now, check for amperage at the output wire with the engine off and the key out of the ignition. If you register anything 0.5 milliamps or more at the output wire, your diodes are bad.

  • 91 acura integra only charging at 2.6 amps new alt on the way any chance diodes are stuck open bc it drains my battery to where i dont even have dash lights when i turn the key on?

  • @nextrider123 I believe I've responded to this somewhere else, let me know if that's not the case.

  • does BBB stands for "Bueno, Bonito, Barato" :) = Good, Nice, Cheap :)

  • @ip161314 Bueno, Bonito, Barato= good beautiful cheap = correct translation

  • Can we get a honda/acura engine rebuild video!? this would be the ultimate!!!

  • @adidas6804 At some point but that's really not something I do all that often as it's WAY more expensive than just replacing one.

  • thanks for making the video. I realized the grounding of alternators is important too.

  • is it good thing to replace the battery too? eric? because basically if the car alternator is dead the car running battery power

  • @vietcong4u the new alternator should charge the old battery fine, but it would be worth while testing the battery

  • @vietcong4u For that there is the Alternator Diagnosis 101 video.

  • eric which ase test are the easiest to pass any info would help thanks

  • @12344richard That's subjective really as it depends on your knowledge base.

  • i wish the guy that worked on my car was as good as you. he treats mine like shit.

  • @FrenchValleyAirport You might consider going to someone else. I'd be happy to work on your car though.

  • @EricTheCarGuy we have credit with Goodyear mountain view. so thats how i get a lot of things done... but the guy still treats my car like shit. but i think its because thats normal to him. no respect if its not yours.

  • only if hondas were this easy

  • Eric, fantastic tech video again in the new HUGE shop !! Looking good with the domestic stuff in there. I will donate my 1999 GMC Suburban to you when I turn 300K. Last week replaced the 5.7 vortec at 220K, now have 600 miles on donor engine from a Yukon with 90K on the clock. Gotta love GM and the "quality aftermarket" parts guys.

May I suggest a video in the electrical series dealing with "black wire disease" ?? Many run their vehicles in corrosive road salt, etc.

    Stay dirty,

    lakesideranch

  • @lakesideranch Great suggestion I'll look into it as I hope to cover a variety of topics in the electrical series.

  • These are so helpful!!!!

I am in school right now and we are working on alternator and its nice to catch up! Thanks Eric

  • @spazmonkey05 Glad you liked the video, thanks for the comment.

  • Do you ever put dielectric grease on the connection at the battery?

  • @spelunkerd No, sometimes I put a little axle grease on the positive terminal however. To be honest if the battery is made well it won't corrode (Panasonic's are the only ones I've seen that don't), no matter what I've done to other batteries it seems they corrode anyway so with those I just work to keep them clean.

  • I replaced the alt. in my escape a few weeks ago. And tomorrow I have a lincoln mark7 coming in that needs a new alt. should be easy but those escapes are very hard it literally took me 8 hours to replace it

  • @SuperchargedMustang5 Yea some of those Fords are pretty tight to work on. Thanks for the comment.

  • why do you always look to your left before each sentence when your talking to the camera....lol. nervous tick? Anyway, great videos very informative.

  • @cnorth50 Cue cards.

  • GM! Diggin the new stuff, Eric! Having fun swinging that wrench? We need to get you some ratcheting wrenches. I'm so glad to hear you stress the importance of quality parts! Nice connections there. Quick connect, but not so quick disconnect, eh? Great video as always, Eric. Me thinks I smell an ETCG1 discussion about the electrical/technological advances that are being made. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that this has been coming on for a while. Stay Dirty, Eric.

  • @JTheGuitarPlayer And that is the primary motivation behind the electrical series that I'm doing, gonna start slow but work my way up to more complicated stuff as a base to build on for future videos. Thanks for your comments as always.

  • he said "idiot light" LOL,...

  • Hey Eric. Are you ever going to do a series where you rebuild alternators and starters? I'm interested in how its done.

  • @eltrouble Actually I'll be visiting the facility where they do this for BBB in the not too distant future.

  • what are your feelings toward Duralast??

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • @jhnvallejo Great!!! I was a poor college student once I had an old Chevrolet and I would only put Auto Zone parts. Heck they were the cheapest, and they would give a "life time warranty". Sometimes their rebuilt starter would go bad say in a couple of years, but I would go and get another one. It all depends on your needs if you have money and want dependability go with another brand like NAPA, but if you are squeezed Duralast works fine.

  • Great tips on the mounting surface.

Where is the belt video though?

  • @sketchers356 I just added a link to the description.

  • thanks eric

  • how do you now if a parts decent quality parts is my question

  • @unboxingguru1 Normally the 'cheep' parts come in plane white boxes with no major company label on the front and you can just 'feel' that they are not made with quality stuff.

  • does BBB make HO alts?? Looking for at least 200 amp alt. Running sound system with second battery. Since then my interior lights tend to flicker when car is at idle. Thinking I need a high output alt. Yet my voltage does not drop below 13.5v?? Could it be the alt causing the flickering? too much load to charge both batteries??

  • @SinBeatz1 could be the voltage regulator, most are internal on the alternator so you may have to replace the alternator but some are external as well

  • @SinBeatz1

A bad diode in the bridge rectifier or a bad voltage regulator can cause flicking under normal cases. If it happens using the stereo it could be other problems as well. A common problem with many high output alternators is that the idle speed current output can be lower than a stock lower output alternator. Alternators such as police cars have a special high output current at idle and lower speeds for service duty.

  • @SinBeatz1, Do a search on the tube for Steve Meade designs; he has a Tahoe running THREE alts with the modified brackets; and shows high output alts. also; By the way, be ready to rape your bank account !!! trb

  • @trbfshmn i thought he was running 4 ?

  • @trbfshmn John price had 6 alts in his tahoe im pretty sure.

  • @SinBeatz1 Yes I believe they do. With systems like yours they tend to draw a lot of amps, having the second battery is a good idea but the alternator may not be putting out enough at idle to keep up. Sometimes you can get away with just a smaller pulley as that will make the alternator spin faster at idle perhaps giving you the power that you need. Check with a shop that does audio to see what they can offer.

  • I subcribed bro, i wished i had a garage to do more major work. Good vid

  • @Devestato72 Thanks for the sub. I'm very grateful for the space that I have now as I used to roll around in the apartment complex parking lot (gravel) fixing things.

  • @ 06:26

    eric??!!!

    resistance is futile

    my friend

  • @marsL001 Ha! I love it.

  • 0:00 to 0:18 zzzZZZzzz......

  • as evah

    playlisted,liked,favorite,667stars

    can`t watch your video`s enough

over and over and over and over and over and,....well you get my drift

most patient teacher ever rewind,..and he`s telling me again and again and again and again how it should be done(yes my english is bollocks sorry me a dutch s.o.b )

    love yah man

    BEST TEACHER EVERRRRR

    still dirty

can`t seem to get clean here ..........sigh

  • @marsL001 Your the greatest man thanks very much for all your comments and your support.

  • Just did an alternator R&R on my 1997 Civic. Not too bad, moved the CV shaft, the oil filter and then took out the alternator from the bottom. The problem was during install I think, I broke the crankshaft sensor harness and threw a P1337 code! Fixing the harness underneath the intake took longer than the alternator fix! Damn.

    Good video Eric!

  • @mts0628 Yea you got to be careful with those. I too take them down from the bottom but all I've ever had to do was take the axle out. Thanks for the comment.

  • That's an awesome tip about knocking those pins back a little. It can be so tight without doing so. Cheers.

  • I usually watch c-span but you are cool too...

  • @sbaker3232 I suppose I am better than c-span. :)

  • Is that the same Tahoe in all the other vids? If so, the owner is sure dumping a lot of money into it!

  • @ga1999 He's actually a good friend of mine and I do a lot of work for him.

  • nice

  • i like the 101 videos they are nice... but come on Eric show another engine swap or you really gettin dirty with an engine, come on :) but again great video

  • @corsie1987 I need one to come into the shop for that to happen, since I moved to the other side of town I've lost some customers.

  • Hi Eric, last time I replace my alternator.. I did not disconnect negative battery. and yes it spark my tool when hit to ground lol..

I know this video special for BBB, is it recommend to fix the alternator such as replace carbon brush or etc?

  • @axenz1 You could rebuild them if you know what parts need to be replaced, it's really up to you.

  • Man that fuel gauge went epileptic when you cranked it.

  • wow

  • Good job!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ur vids r difrent now ?? but still good

  • my first first like for ETCG ever!!!! haha ---Great vid!
