I agree 100%. Letting a 4 year walk anywhere by him/herself beyond 50 feet from the parent is borderline parental neglect. When this happened someone in the family gave video of Smith when he was Robie's age to the press. I remember thinking how wierd it was. Smith was swimming in a pool right in fromt of the camera's lens repeating "Grandpa. Grandpa". It was like when an animal doesn't realize that it's you behind that huge camera's "eye". the main lesson out of this story is parents need to watch their kids whether it's them getting bullied in school, having anger issues and not knowing how to deal with them or letting them go out on the street to wander off by themselves. watch your kids.

1 person in 100 is a psychopath. So if one of those people are abused or snaps all hell breaks loose. Most serial killers or cold blooded killers had an abusive background. I know I can point out that I was physically and sexually abused till I went to live with my foster parents and I havent killed anyone, there is no excuse but If I was a phychopath (Im not, been tested :) Im curious to know if I could possibly commit murder.

I agree 100%. Letting a 4 year walk anywhere by him/herself beyond 50 feet from the parent is borderline parental neglect. Doreen Robie made a terrible mistake letting her son walk so far by himself, and I am sure she regrets today. If I was the defense, I would've pointed that out to the jury big time.

We do not live in the type of world where you let a 4 year old walk by himself. It does not matter where you live anymore. Pedophiles, molestors, and rapists and murderers are walking amongst us and we have to protect ourselves and our children from harm.

When this happened someone in the family gave video of Smith when he was Robie's age to the press. I remember thinking how wierd it was. Smith was swimming in a pool right in fromt of the camera's lens repeating "Grandpa. Grandpa". It was like when an animal doesn't realize that it's you behind that huge camera's "eye". He seemed distressed that he couldn't clearly see his Grandpa's face. They were throuwing around a defense of some sort of developmental difficulty, maybe they were right?

I really don't think it was all just Eric's fault, yes he killed a innocent boy and he needed to pay for in actions but I really blame both parents too. I think it was wrong to let a 4 year old walk to camp by himself and I'm sure the parents are probably beating themselves up over it enough. But I think if it hadn't been Derrick it would have been another kid. Getting bullied is terrible but I don't see that as an excuse to kill another kid, especially when it's a kid that never did anything to you. That's never the sole reason either. There's always another reason under that whether it be mental issues or whatever.

While you're trying, making hard efforts, to take care of them. Like if you go downstairs to put the laundry in the dryer so your little kid has clean clothes, he happens to get out. It was 100 yards. Derrick was very smart, mind of a 7 year old, she thought no harm would come to him. Small town, thick neighborhood. It was an accident.

My son is almost 8, and it became embarrassing to him that I walk him to school and I can literally see the school from the upstairs windows, it is about a hundred yards from my house. Yet, every morning I watch him bicycle over the school my heart pounding, ready to jump if I see something suspicious.

I had been walking to the park alone since about the same age (as did most kids my age) I know its hard to understand if your from a bigger town or a city.

Now when we got older, we were allowed to walk my ourselves and with other kids. It is a dangerous world now, and pedophiles, and killers live in every town and they also drive looking for victims. I live in NYC now, and my kids did not walk anywhere by themselves until they were older and more street smart!
