Has it EVER occurred to you that perhaps God is tryin' to get your attention because He KNOWS what's ahead? A fixed fight with God is futile, He is GOING to get your attention, one way or another... YOU ARE IN A FIXED FIGHT. God takes a personal interest in the lives of every human being on the planet.

"NO MORE DELAYS ARE POSSIBLE Tell my people time is running out the night is far spent.” ~ Jesus speaking to Neville Johnson

"TIME IS OVER"!! ~ Dr Owuor

  • I seriously think that religion and science can be both on the same boat. BUT, this is true, as long as there is some common sense and intelligence in the discussion. I really don't understand how supposedly intelligent people start making agressive statements about each other...let there be some respect. Although I believe in God and don't believe in string theory, I think it is perfectly conceivable.

  • "No religious preachers"

Only way to avoid it is to lock comments. The religious dolts are everywhere and will always jump at stuff like this. It's simply human nature for many folk that cannot buy the fact that we're not meant for anything and that there is nothing else beyond this life (for us). A sad, selfish bunch that have held back man for eons. One day they will be stifled and any utterance of such nonsense will be outlawed. I look forward to that day.

Btw, Brian G is the kid. ;-)

  • @Monkeymooth I sure as shit hope that your trolling. Because that's the stupidest thing I've heard all day.

  • Non of this is true!

    Says Allah!

  • And other stupid gods

  • The silly thing is that even if science found a theory to everything, it wouldn't necessarily disprove religion. Why attack the scientific method that explains "how" when the theist could always just fall back on the "why"?

  • How come religion contradicts science? It doesn't make sense. God did not descend for a while to say that science is EVIL.

  • oh Brian... dogs don't know it's not bacon!

  • Science does require time to learn. We humans need time to understand the concept behind the science already around us. Religion is only the answer to how this impeccable implementation of this science came into existence. Religion does NOT deny the existence of it. My reply to the comment "that there is a god in everyone of us" explain how such

  • @apmlifiedpunk

I used to believe in imaginary beings, than i took an aging to the knee.....

  • Science behind perfectionism of this universe? Obviously there is and this science implemented by God for what we are today. Ask yourself, although it may seem too spiritual think about it . To what extent can such processes as precise as they are, can occur without the involvement of a higher power? A god in everyone of us? Scientists have yet to completely understand the intricate structure of our brain. How godly can we be when our when our own body remains marvel to us?

  • Not preaching my religion but just clarifying misconceptions and unjustified comments against religions

  • Religion is for people who have a united faith in a single creator without whom the perfection of this universe would not be possible. I'm a Muslim and marvel at the discoveries of science but the fact remains that science fails to explain or only presume what tends to be out of their grasp

  • @apmlifiedpunk I think this is out of your grasp, this explains WHY we have united faith.. this is science behind your religion and you don't even know it. god is everyone. isn't that the idea?

  • @apmlifiedpunk So you deny science the time required to learn more about our origins yet religion had how much time to solidify/mold people into what religion was created on in the first place, which was control of a populace but nevermind that for now. Religion is already on the decline around the planet and it has been around for a much, MUCH greater amount of time in comparison. Science needs more time.. maybe much more. But I am certain it will break this "code".

  • haha cant talk about religion but we can go all day long even in the vid many assumptions about philosophy that doesnt have a shred of evidence nor can be demonstrated and is at best hypothesis.

wow you anti- religionists are insecure arrogant hypocritical fucks.

whattsa matter is religion competing with your universe view? lol

  • I've never understood the conflict between religion and science. The two are far from mutually exclusive. It's okay to believe in both.

I for one am a big fan of Greene for the fact that he makes these theories assessable to the layperson. Not all of us have a Doctorate in Quantum Mechanics.

  • yea seriously shut the fuck up about god and jesus and the bible and religion...you just sound like smacked asses no matter how hard you try. You're just stupid...plain and simple

  • I soo love Brian Greene <3

  • Can anyone recommend a good beginners books for an adult wanting to learn about physics?

  • @mo42086 If you're interested in some good video lectures on the subject I suggest Walter Lewin's physics series. You can get them for free on iTunes and also watch them on youtube.

  • @mo42086 My advice would be to review a little math before that. An introduction to calculus is recommended.

  • as christians, it is not our job to shove our religion down your throat. we expose and present what we know to everyone for them to make there own decisions. anybody trying to force you to believe in anything (Christianity or evolution or what have you) is in the wrong.

  • @mleeson94

Decent attitude. Let's hope you follow through with it when it comes to your own child/ren

  • Americans should NEVER make documentaries, they don't have the requirements for that, keep on making gay shows and talk shows, and leave proper TV production to the mighty BBC.

  • Science and Religion do indeed co-exist. If you guys had a decent understanding of quantum physics, you would understand that science proves that we are our own creators/gods. I recommend a documentary called What The Bleep. On a second note, shut the fuck up.

  • I guess the dog had studied, but ate its homework.. :(

  • I guess the dog had studied, but ate its homework.. :(

  • Is there a version without commercials?

  • Question about string theory!

Strings vibrate at different frequencies and a frequency is s^(-1). So if strings exist then time must be constant and exist outside of strings?

  • Any physicists out there ever smoke DMT? Did your experience cause you to reevaluate your approach toward understanding string theory, general relativity?

  • fundings consumes half of the video O_º

  • Even uniformed religions don't know exactly what god is. Get over it!

  • @Bradikal61

OLD OLD OLD. burden of proof please.

  • 4:40 for start you science curious mother fuckers!

  • Thank you kaypee1985

  • Every single space video on youtube, without exception, has a comments section littered with tired, irrelevant, annoying and repetitive arguments about religion.

    Shut. The. Fuck. Up.

  • @kramnodd12 dude i was just thinking that when i read it haha. Religion even managed to annoy me on another level! It is simply wasting intellectuals time who find it important to attack. It is important to attack for social reasons, but its seriously a waste of time trying to attack it philosophically... its not real philosophy anyway!

  • @skylinefolife Atleast this is much more believable than a fairy in the clouds who created the universe in 6 days.

  • Brotip start at 4:30

  • @piloooogen Thanks, bro.

  • I lv ads

    Lol

  • Does science prohibits one in believing its Creator? Where? I couldn't find any sources.

  • @MichaelMellijor No, actually science says the odds of there being a creator are about as high as of there being none. However, it also says that it is highly unlikely that if there is one, it is of a form that we could even understand.

  • @semperFi4ever100 How would scientist know, have they become the new

'priests'. I didn't realize that 'scientists' are so smart.

One thing is certain, everyone has their own belief system, that is usually

    more pyschological than thought out.

"Too many wanting to believe, too many refusing to believe"!

  • If science WAS shoved down throats, I wouldn't have met anyone after primary school, in the middle of Europe, who believed in the geocentric model. IMO, if something should be "shoved down throats", it's general philosophy.

Hate how in this country all education below university includes "religion". Which is exactly, always and only christianity. And obligatory. While things like objective ethics are just thrown out of the program, because really, who cares?...

  • "Imagination is more important than knowledge" - Albert Einstein

  • Well we can simply dismiss the idea and say, "God created it all!". But that's not the way science works. As scientists, we want to know the truth, we want to know how the world works.. Even if there was a creator, we want to know exactly how he had created the universe.. Or if there is not, we want to know how it all began.. We thirst for knowledge because we know that it is this that will ultimately give us the upper hand..

  • You've got to have a great fucking imagination to follow this type of weird fucking shit.

  • @skylinefolife amen to that brother. I wish to do it after school! :D

  • I wonder how M-Theory can unify E(8)xE(8) class with all the other classes of strings. Also how Calibi-Yau manifolds will behave in this duality. hmm.

  • Skip to 4:40 for the start

  • 'Buddha' as early as four centuries BC, has said (String Theory) ... Three thousand worlds, a snap of the fingers are away!

  • When I first read this book at 13 years old, my mind was blown and I fell in love with this stuff. I'm now 19 and studying physics in college. This is absolutely amazing.

  • I don't believe the bible to be an accurate description of creation. It is however the best description of very ancient human history that is available. Now the existence of a creator can never be proven nor dis-proven. For myself I believe there was a creator that set up the conditions leading to the Big Bang and those condition allowed for the evolution of a species like us.

  • i love ads

  • Do you know somewhere I can find this with traditional Chinese subtitles?

  • the theory of everything? bullsht

  • umm you spelled "forces" wrong :(

  • I'm sorry, but that opening segment with the enthralled-sounding announcer was annoying as hell. Greene himself is great, but that crap is why I don't watch TV anymore.

  • Religion is the opposite of science. Science is reality, religion is a movie. You may like it but it's still just a movie, not real, not proven.

  • in general i have no problem accepting religion and science together, but the disgraceful crimes that christianity and islam jusitfy between them both, I do have a problem with

  • The book The Elegant Universe is referenced in the movie, "Limitless"! I thought that was cool! Also right now I am reading the book!

  • LOL?

  • Im pretty sure you are an educated person but arent these just theories? okay so dont go around bashing every christian you come into contact with. im just saying its just as annoying as someone constantly pressing religion on you. and i know you think you are smarter than anyone who contests your THEORIES, maybe wear black rim glasses and a couple tats but still weak as fuck

  • @domluna I hope you'r not talking about the theory of evolution. if so, you have no understanding of what a scientific theory is.

  • One of the most extraordinary scientific documentaries of all time.

  • The problem here is that String Theory is the only Theory that is in Scientific "Limbo" so to say.

For the rest of Theories in Science, it comes down to evidence and the conclusions we can draw from it - not proof (as in Mathematically Definite). String Theory is the only Theory that is 100% mathematically definite - but can never have any evidence gathered for it. :|

    Fuck.

  • hhahaha. Teach physics to a "dog"... XD

  • HOLY SHIT! How many sponsors does this program have??!!

  • smoke weed err day

  • Documentaries simply must be left to the British.

  • It seems a product advertisement, somehow, a bit like TV shop...

  • Why is it that people have such a hard time accepting both religion and science? One does not disprove the other. Just because scientists may be figuring out the ultimate structure of the universe it does not disprove the existence of a creator that initiated the process or constructed physical laws. Maybe string theory will unify science and religion the way scientists are trying to unify relativity and quantum mechanics. Keep an open mind knuckleheads.

  • @BradiKal61

Religion as a philosophy is great ... as long as it's not shoved down other people's throats! :D

  • And I am assuming that by religion, you mean Christianity.

  • @dlawso77

    1) You assume that you were created. Many "religions" out there talk about manifestation instead of creation.

    2) Science never said that there is nothing beyond us, I never said either. In fact personally I believe that there is definitely something/one beyond us. But that does mean that I subscribe to any religion.

  • @kaypee1985 you dont have to suscribe to any religion, but you do have to suscribe to the fact that there is a god out there.....god is religion...so thats y i say religion.......god and science coexists...god created everything, therefore he created science...so all u science buffs out there stop brushing god off to the side because u think you have your science....when god is the one who put it there!!

  • @dlawso77 God and Science might co-exist in your head but that doesn't mean there is any reason for anyone else to believe that a "god" exists. There is no proof of god and infantile minds will continue to try and push their beliefs with no evidence. Religion holds back humanity I hope it diminishes during my lifetime to a tiny speck and science can continue its discoveries uninterrupted.

  • @ExplodeDeath i completely feel what you're saying. yes ur rite there is no actual physical proof that god does exist and we believers in god know this but we actually leave the hope and at least the chance that a god does exist, its just that we believe in it so hard and that all of the wonders of the universe are just so many that its like to us, religious folk, there almost has to be a god. i mean how the fuck else did all this universe shit just finally, suddenly happen to come into play?

  • @ExplodeDeath but then the science people, act like "oh theres absolutely no possibility of a god" like they know for sure or something, and thats where the big clash between science and religion come from

  • Comment removed

  • @dlawso77 right i really have to point out this one thing. The bible does not give an explenation of how the world was created. At all. why? simple. Genesis gives 2 stories of how the earth was created, ergo they were trying to tell us something different then the 'scientific' way. Besides, god in the bible stands for love, it s just that simple. If you are a songwriter with no inspiration. Go to the psalmes and replace god with baby or darling or honey and you have yourself a superb lovesong.

  • @kaypee1985 and im assuming that he meant religion, not PARADOX(ur hundreds contradictory versions of bible...)

  • @dlawso77 Your argument makes no sense, religion cant be why we are here, people have to exist first so then can invent and practice religion.

You also assume the existence of god, which cant be proved or disproved scientifically or logically.

Nothing should be forced down anyone's throat!!

There is no science in religion.

Your statement is contradictory. How can people be free to have an open mind if they are 'forced' to believe in something?

  • @BradiKal61

I completely agree with you. Just because the scientists cannot prove the existence of God doesn't believe that he doesn't exist. I'm a Christian. I completely believe in God and i love science. I wish everyone could be like that.

  • @BradiKal61 Your right. No one knows the extent of the design of the universe. The best answer to a question you don't know is not "God's way is the only way" but "I don't know but lets find out." That's exactly why no one needs religion pushed on them. Thanks a lot for posting!

  • @BradiKal61 Science a collection of information from tests that help us explain the physical world around us. Religion is a mental construct that an individual uses to view the world around them. You are correct that one does not necessarily need to be exclusive of the other. But they are completely different. This is because religion is a mental construct, a thought, and cannot be tested. It has no physicality to it.

  • @BradiKal61 We just need to remind ourselves that from Atheism to the most radical religion, they are only points of view...merely thoughts.

  • @BradiKal61 I was catholic and then at some point I was an atheist and now I'm an agnostic. Humans cannot know with absolute certainty if a god does or does not exist. In some ways, quantum mechanics could be the language of 'god'. 'He' would be able to know both the position and velocity of each particle with great accuracy if he's on the outside of the universe.

  • @BradiKal61 yeah, just like science does not disprove fairies and flying spaghetti monsters.

  • @BradiKal61 I have felt this way for a long time! Well said!

  • @BradiKal61 The biggest reason scientists cannot usually accept religion, is because scientists work off of being able to prove things. Not disprove them. If there is not a way to prove something exists, most will not accept its existence. Religion in a lot of peoples eyes is a blindly following faith. Simply believeing in it to have something to hold onto to prove things they themselves cannot prove. Scientists figure they should be able to prove anything to believe in it, not blindly follow.

  • @BradiKal61 There's only a problem when the creator of the universe is perceived in the form of a man with emotions. Men are animals. I doubt the creator a savage nor a hipocrite but the idea of a "creator" of the universe beyond our comprehension is more understanding.

  • @BradiKal61 Real Scientists will acknowledge there is no room for religion in Science. Religion's foundation lies in the realm of superstition. There is no evidence that an anthropomorphic god created the Universe, on the contrary, more evidence we created him. No Evidence for the eternal soul, or an afterlife either. To search for such is to practice science with bias, and is not valid science. It's called "Conformational Bias." I'd rather take the humble approach, say we lack the intellect.

  • @BradiKal61 completely agree with wat ur saying...religion and science are tied together...without religion there would be no science....it doesnt have to be a battle between the two like other people like to make it....they are both interconnected

  • @BradiKal61 Science can disprove many of the assertions of religion... Noah's flood, Creationism, etc. If there is an impersonal supreme intelligence then we'll discover it with earnest enquiry, but not if we are bound by primitive attempts at understanding the universe. Another problem is that laws; shariah, outlawing gay marriages, etc are inspired and justified by religious faith. I think it deserves to be challenged, because many human being suffer as a result. My 2 cents.

  • @BradiKal61

    Depends on the religion...

  • @RPFS2008

True. But I was talking about BOTH sides of the argument, from both the scientific and religious perspectives. People can work on their own side of the question without necessarily needing to disprove the other. Did some entity use "strings" to build the universe in a manner indistinguishable from the universe evolving without conscious control? Who knows?

  • @BradiKal61 Omg thank you thank you thank you... someone who realises that one does not factually cancel out the other! and there I was thinking to myself ohh no I'm probably an idiot just because I don't buy either one of those things as if It were the same as choosing a car! Thank you again! Made my night.

  • Isn't this the theory that resolves the apparent contradictions between general relativity and quantum mechanics?

  • Hrmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I detect bible thumpers in here.....They condem religion for not being scientific, yet the only thing they have are theories. Ironic isn't it. ....lolz...religion ISN'T scientific....you call the general theory of relativity just a 'theory'? Maybe you are using your terms wrong, i don't know.

  • parallel universes might explain ghosts

  • OMG..is that canon rock?!?! *_*

our universe is realy beautiful than :D

  • holy crap, the video has advertisments as a part of the video... Youtube's not gonna like this

  • I have the formula of everything, 0=1

  • @najoba interesting theory, could be possible in the 12th dimension

  • @nextHeritage Yea, lots of hypocracy but what can you do? Science and Religion fit perfectly well together in my eyes, i don't see why people have to choose between either and then criticize the other.

  • I like how the description bashes on religion when one of the greatest Physicists, Albert Einstein, was very religious. So he's basically saying Einstein can't handle the information he put out?

Anyway it's not about religion, it's about physics, thanks for uploading these videos!

  • M-theory is the way to go! It's Science and it has more logic behind it. The multi-verse is pure energy! At least they can test it mathematically and experimentally with the LHC and what not. Whereas god cannot be proved whatsoever!

  • The narrator must think he's recording for a thriller. How tiresome and typical American. :/

  • fucking awesome, thx for upload

  • I hope there are not commercials through this whole thing!

  • EVERYONE! Just skip to 4:50 to start the actual documentary. This doesn't need major editing - this is how it aired on TV in 2003. And I love NOVA logos.

    February 23, 2011 4:12 pm

  • ahhh GOD I wish I was smart....

  • String theory has a very long childhood :) lol

  • adverts for 5 mins - sorry, bye

  • great arrogance by making the assumption that the whole universe if not existance works based on this theory.

It is the stupidest theory ever .

  • @kybernes23 Um, you listen to Depeche Mode and you think this is a stupid theory? I....uh....nevermind...

  • @koreankayagum I don't think this is a stupid theory, but i do love Depeche Mode. A lot.

  • just consider this these advance minds are overseeing the destruction of of our home planet but is OK if you destroy the planet on this universe we have another 10 parallel universes to go to we get to do over.

  • @Vmartin70EZ its 10 extra DIMENSIONS, not Parallel universes. Even if parallel universes existed, it would be physically impossible to reach them.

  • science is the religion of man the attempt of man to elevate himself to Godhood. and these scientists consider the idea of creation ludicrous this string theory just shows how ignorant scientists are and how preposterous "evolution" really is.

  • @Vmartin70EZ no you dickhead. The great thing about science is, its not preeched to you from birth teaching you to ignore all reason. Science is learned, studied, and nothing is believed until tested and confirmed. I dont care if your religious. Thats fine, but when you try and compare science which can be explained, to your religion, which in all history has never produced a shred of proof or fact to this day, your so far off the mark its embarressing.

  • @Vmartin70EZ you aint to inteligent are ya.... Ignorance has many forms... One form is taken, when someone dismisses ideas offhand because they can't accept that they are following other doctrines blindly... Your ignorance is scary it hampers our ability as a whole society as you preach your ignorance as fact... Science preaches proof over doctrine everytime... without theorys such as this we would all still be in the dark ages, delusional religious nuts like you would still be burning witches..

  • @Vmartin70EZ Yeah, you're right. Let's go back to the 5th century. We don't need this stupid science stuff. We don't need medicine or technology. We'll just pray to "god" to help us out. After all, he/she/it has been doing such a wonderful job for millenia-NOT.

  • FUCK YAAAA!!!! THis is epic!!

  • this is just a big advertisement and you have wasted my time

  • dam you pachelbel

  • @FatJesusSD

    Proof?

  • holographic string theory

  • FUCK I LOVE THIS DEBATE!!! The dialogue is enthralling!

  • okay so physicists have discovered molecules, then they discovered atoms, and within an atom they discovered a nuclei with nucleons i.e. protons and neutrons inside the nuclear shell and electrons orbiting this shell. inside protons and neutrons, they've discovered other particles including quarks. and now they're suggesting these quarks and everything in this universe is comprised of extremely tiny vibrating strings. here's the ultimate question: HOW FAR DOWN DOES THE RABBIT HOLE GO?

  • @FallofDarkness55 GOOD QUESTION!!

  • @jasonfish07 maybe nothing exists at all. maybe our consciousness is what drives the universe and hence everything else that we can sense with our five senses. it might be a radical notion but how far down does the rabbit hole really go?

  • @FallofDarkness55 Even in the context of String Theory, quarks are thought to be elementary particles. Don't think of a quark as being "made of" strings, but as *being* a string, with a particular tension, vibration, etc. It's just a different, perhaps more useful way of viewing the same thing. i.e., we may well have reached the bottom of the rabbit hole. In the 1800s, we thought we were there with atoms. Turned out there was more. But we're really only 1 to 2 levels down from that today.

  • Comment removed

  • And how is this rubbish any different from religion?

There is no evidence for any of this, it is pure speculation and philosophy, metaphysics.

Real science is that which can be tested and experimented with.

To say there "might be" parallel universes is the same as saying "there might be" green invisible gremlins on the dark side of the moon, it would be just as educationaly backward.

  • @MDEMONIC689 how do u think theories get formulated and eventually tested? by people having an idea and expanding upon it

  • @gleetron

"by people having an idea and expanding upon it"

Sure, but you have to wonder if religions are not created the same way.

For instance consider the idea there is infinite universes for a moment, well then what religions say about an "immortal soul" would infact be true, i'd be immortal, i cannot die if i am always going to exist somewhere in the universe.

You may say "well its not the same without the memory"

But that means you define living (life) by memory.

  • @MDEMONIC689 i agree that that is how religion may have been made....along with language, laws, and other fundamentals of life. when u say "what religions says, it leads me to believe that you are speaking on behave of all religions. something tells me that you have not studied every religion; however, nor have i. and there is a vast difference between an immortal soul and human immortality.

  • @gleetron

Well, i'll put religion to one side because really people can believe what they want, so long as they don't turn it into political policy or have influence over political policy.

The main point is: are some of these theories science?

I would argue that many of these ideas really are metaphysics and philosophy, rather than something that can be tested objectively.

Also is there a practical purpose?

Theres nothing wrong with philosophy, but i think it is different from science.

  • @MDEMONIC689 Well i can completely relate to you on that part, regarding metaphysics. I've often wondered what would come if we were to discover the existence of strings and whatnot.

  • @MDEMONIC689

As of yet, 11 dimensions and parallel universes are just theories. It is extremely difficult to test something like that. The difference between this and philosophy, for example, is that it does make (theoretically) testable predictions. The reason they are theories is because we see all of these phenomena going on in the universe and use math to explain them. These are the only way to reconcile the math and the effects. And so far, it works.

  • @dsh1224

Key word in front of testable is "theoretically".

Saying something can be" tested in theory" is the same as saying something like: "there is a button somewhere and if i push it i'll get the answer, but i don't know if the button exists or not yet, or do i know the location"

When physics speaks of "looking for the holy grail" i sometimes think they mean it in an almost litteral sense.

  • @MDEMONIC689 True, but just look at the theory of general relativity. Its still called a theory, not because it hasn't been proven, or that its just speculation, but because there is no better explanation, yet. String theory is trying to be that better explanation. People don't just "come up" with these ideas randomely. There is a lot of math behind it.

  • @Anthonyk312

Well i can't possibly understand the math, if it is gibberish to me i have to ignore it until their math provides something tangible, something objective.

This could be seen as an admition of failure on my part, but really it's that nobody in their right mind would just "take someones word for it"

It might all add up if the things you add together are all acute ideas of the mind.

A lot of arcane trickery can be (and is) done with numbers.

  • @MDEMONIC689

Memorize this ; There are known-knowns, there are known unknowns, and there are unknown unknowns.

  • @MrMindVirus no unknown knows?

it seems like that would be what we know that we dont know...

or maybe i'm not getting it right

  • in another universe i'm Einstein.

  • @bboyloco3 thats funny because just a few days ago me and my friends played the "in another universe" game for almost half an hour. I believe the craziest one was, "In another universe, Elvis and Chuck Norris flew into the sun on the back of a unicorn while playing the ukulele and doing the macarena while covered in wet paint and chicken feathers."

  • Just what are these people smoking!!! I want some of that Wii!

  • >mfw 10 minutes of sponsoring

  • thanks a million for these special uploads. i knew these videos sounded familiar because i recently checked out a book from the library called the elegant universe by Brian Greene. the cover of the book says it's also a major nova special on pbs and i came across this fantastic nova special here on youtube. again thanks for the upload. you rock.

  • whats the cello song around 7:15

  • @shamurs It's Pachelbel's Canon in D

  • Is this a commercial?

  • @bernhard12345 the first part is prity much trying to get you sicked up for the long show.

  • I couldn't get through the intro.. too much like a home shopping commercial selling me crap. String theory makes the universe just as "amazing" as scratch proof fire resistant car wax...and that narrator can shove it all up his arse for what I care.
