  • "Mansa Musa captured the attention of the Arab world when he left his home in the West African kingdom of Mali to make a pilgrimage to Mecca in 1324. Unlike his grandfather Sundiata, Mansa Musa was a devout Muslim. Islamic law requires that all faithful Muslims make a hajj, or holy visit, to the city on the Arabian Peninsula where the faith was started."

  • The black African empire of Mali replaced Ghana and eventually conquered more territory and it's leaders converted to Islam for benefits in trade and political reasons.

The Egyption Al Omari said of Mansa Musa

"The most important of the Moslem Negro kings; his land is the largest, his army the most numerous; he is the king who is the most powerful, the richest, the most fortunate, the most feared by his enemies and the most able to do good to those around him."

  • Ibn Battuta said:

"Another of [the Malli blacks'] good qualities is their concern for learning the sublime Qur'an by heart...One day I passed a handsome youth from them dressed in fine clothes and on his feet was a heavy chain. I said to the man who was with me, 'What has this youth done -- has he killed someone?' The youth heard my remark and laughed. It was told me, 'He has been chained so that he will learn the Qu'ran by heart.'"
