i love how as Che, Mandy can be so precise sounding almost identical to the studio recording and yet being on stage causes him to add that extra UMPH that brings out such moments as 4:55 which takes my BREATH away because its so passionate.
@emlodik No, I haven't, but I'm not fond of Patti LuPone either. Everyone has their own opinions, and I respect that. However, I'm not trying to argue or anything, but if he likes LuPone, he does.
@VanitasxAura But HE doesn't respect other people's opinions! I can't look up a single clip of a show Patti did in the past, because EzyCheesy keeps posting crap about the actors playing the same role as Patti. He is OBSESSED, he compulsively looks up every other Evita, Norma Desmond, Fantine, etc, just to make rude and obnoxious comments about the actors. Well, it's a sword that cuts both ways!
@emlodik Well, I can't help him there. Personally, I like either Audrey Flick or Madonna as the best Evita. I'm not gonna shoot down other actresses for playing the same role. Every one has a different approach and that makes each actress unique to how they portray their character. It's not something that you should insult just because you like another actress and think they're the best.
This is so emotional. I am a complete supporter of Evita and this song made me cry my eyes out when I first heard it an hour or so ago. Evita will never be forgotten. May she live in our hearts forever.
Er, bad audio quality? For an audience recording that's over thirty years old now I'd say it was brilliant. Many, many thanks for sharing this priceless gem.
DAMN! I would have given anything to have seen this show with Pantinkin & Lupone!! What a pair. Talk about magnificent voices, and acting talent to spare. I've heard soooooo many other performers sing Che's part, and no one - simply no one - comes remotely close to Patinkin. God, his phrasing and dramatic emphasis on words is Wonderful. Thanks for putting this up!
There are so many things stunning about this performance, but first and foremost is the spectacularly clear diction. Lupone must have always been jealous of his ability to speak and sing so naturally.
I saw Mandy and Patti a year after the opening, and then again the week it closed. Mandy's singing of Che had developed a lot more sheer venom and sarcasm than this recording. The kettle drums were actually shocking when the Req. began, even though I had heard the London recording. When we first saw Mandy, he WAS Che come to life. The same for Patti, she was Eva Durarte Peron. This Banderas-Ciccone production was a travesty of the live versions. Madonna stealing "Another Suitcase"? WTF?
@nmh1961 I agree. The movie is also too sympathetic to Eva, if I may state so. However, the stage version also makes things seem a little more... "better" than they were? It also makes Che out to be a hero, which is the very last thing he was. Don't get me wrong, I love the musical, for the most part it's a very accurate portrayal of the Perons, but my 2 m ajor problems with it are this, which I will post separately.
@nmh1961 My main problem with the musical is it gives Eva too much credit for Argentina's downfall and Juan too little. In reality it was the opposite. It was Juan's ideas that ruined and trashed Argentina. Eva just copied him and went along for the ride. She was the very opposite of feminism.
@AutumnToSpring Antonio Banaderas is good eye candy, but he cannot match Mandy Patinkin. Also, CHe as narrator is one of my two major problems with the musical. I love the musical, it's very accurate, don't get me wrong, but in the end, Che was bad too. He just gets good press whereas the rest of the world outside of Argentina knows the truth about Evita.

@VanitasxAura To that moron? YES. Ever seen "Play Misty for Me?" He is Jessica Walter and Patti LuPone is Clint Eastwood!!!!
