these small ideas could have a BIG effect. they would save the average american millions in unfair & outrageous fees, they would help many responsible americans buy a little more in groceries, save a little more for their kids' college & save a little more for themselves.
i believe that so long as he is being honest with us with these ideas then God will help us help him achieve it.
Rebuild an american economy is not as easy as fixing oil and food prices. Manufacturing, which is the underlying principle of any economy, is moving abroad because its labour of a similar standard and much cheaper. A modern day economy can not be built on retail and dwindling oil reserves in america mean that its economy is flawed. I guarantee that if obama does become president and his policies rely on the american people, america will not be the worlds economic driving machine

Good point. When gas prices and groceries prices finally push a lot of people into bankruptcy, they will have a nasty surprise with the new Bush/McCain bankruptcy rules. I am not sure when big business made their own employees and customers their enemy, but this is not a long term solution for either side. A healthy relationship is one that works for both sides over a long period of time.
The crux of what he is talking about here applies to the UK, too. Credit Cards are a terrible expense to the average person - this is a very good vote winner. It isn't just the credit card companies but the banks too! For example, I'm an I.T. pro, I understand online systems, etc. You cannot tell me that they don't know your exact balance at all times, regardless of debit transaction. Yet they'll let you overdraw and charge you up to $50 per occurrence.

I agree that there should be regulation changes in credit card disclosures and rules although if someone makes a purchase and then violates the terms of their contract but not paying, if the contact calls for a rate increase that is what should happen because that is what both parties legally agreed to. I think the problem is that credit card companies are allowed to make the agreements too complex and then don't explain them what they really mean.
Exactly! I have half a year of law school. Agreements are written by corporate lawyers, with the intention of getting someone to sgin something they normally wouldn't.
Its all available in the fine print. We have the opportunity to read it. But agreed...rate increases are in that fine print. This business form of legalese is similar to keeping serfs/peasants illiterate 1000 years ago. Just sign with an "X" and the deal's done. Obama '08.
Of all the economic changes Obama wants to make, I feel less moved by the credit card problem. I feel as if Americans need to be smarter about the cards they use. Then again I am biased because I have excellent credit. Just today American Express sent a mail to my house that offered me a card with 8.99% APR after 6 months. Overall, I am a big supporter of Obama and I hope that Washington can get over the partison bullshit and make some real changes.

If McCain wins it won't mean anything except that the statistics are correct... According to wikipedia 44% of Americans consider themselves conservative and 27% as moderate (McCain is somewhere in between the two). That means Barack has an uphill climb to be able to win in normal circumstances. Not to mention all the racists who will vote against him because of his heritage.
That being said I still think he can do it, and I hope he does get to the white house.

Good point. When gas prices and groceries prices finally push a lot of people into bankruptcy, they will have a nasty surprise with the new Bush/McCain bankruptcy rules. I am not sure when big business made their own employees and customers their enemy, but this is not a long term solution for either side. A healthy relationship is one that works for both sides over a long period of time.

The crux of what he is talking about here applies to the UK, too. Credit Cards are a terrible expense to the average person - this is a very good vote winner. Obama has changed tack, and is obviously in General Election mode now. I never doubted his substance, but he was obviously playing the excitement card for large swathes of the nominating process, and now he is clearly demonstrating his depth as a politician. Great man in the making.

It isn't just the credit card companies but the banks too! For example, I'm an I.T. pro, I understand online systems, etc. You cannot tell me that they don't know your exact balance at all times, regardless of debit transaction. Yet they'll let you overdraw and charge you up to $50 per occurrence.

I agree that there should be regulation changes in credit card disclosures and rules although if someone makes a purchase and then violates the terms of their contract but not paying, if the contact calls for a rate increase that is what should happen because that is what both parties legally agreed to. I think the problem is that credit card companies are allowed to make the agreements too complex and then don't explain them what they really mean.

Of all the economic changes Obama wants to make, I feel less moved by the credit card problem. I feel as if Americans need to be smarter about the cards they use. Then again I am biased because I have excellent credit. Just today American Express sent a mail to my house that offered me a card with 8.99% APR after 6 months. Overall, I am a big supporter of Obama and I hope that Washington can get over the partison bullshit and make some real changes.

I agree completely, but the pro-corporate politicians, 9/10 of which I'm willing to bet have been bought or "contributed to," let capitalism go too far. They tax the poor 'til they're broke and let the corporations off with tax cuts, via a trickle-down theory that is simply that: a theory, and nothing more. After all, if the money really did trickle down, record profits would mean that more money would be around for everyone, right? Money is everything nowadays. Even human lives have price tags.

1) Provide better reglation of credit card companies and mortgage companies.
2) Create fund from taxpayer dollars to help those who have a mortgage that is too big for them to handle.
3) Repeal Bush tax cuts.

Many Americans were also tricked by their real estate agents who also happened to be mortgage brokers. Obama should consider introducing legislation that recognizes the inherent conflict of interest with real estate agents also being mortgage brokers.
