  • Hopefully the Rake doesnt come after me for listening to this song.

  • Slenderman: "gimme $20"

    Rake: "alright"

  • <3

  • I listen to this song whenever I'm mad.

  • The Rake Has this song. Slendy has No Wifin' In The Club Gimme Twenty Dollars.

  • I listen to very few songs written in the last twenty years. I listen to this.

It could have been written by Richard Thompson. Brilliant.

  • best song for me

  • using this for a music related project in english XD wish me luck for that A

  • I thought this was about a rake :-S

  • He didn't ask for this

  • The Dismemberists.

  • The rake should've used a condom

  • hey rake i remember you yeah im that guy that gave you your name....yeah i was holding you off with a rake than you said you just wanted to know where the slender man went then i told you he was with the mothman because Jesus owed you $20 dollars.

  • love the bass in this song

  • "Sex makes babies? Better fix that."

  • @thatcaffienatedspaz

"Abortions are complicated. I should probably change shirts, it's my favorite and I don't want it covered in blood."

  • Dear Mr. Rake,

You're voice is sexy, but I still think you're a shameless bastard for murdering your children.

    Love,

    The World

  • This song makes me think of a special little friend who visits me at night and claws my limbs beyond recognition. Such a great guy.

  • @inferno232 You met him too? Such a wonderful pal, with his soulless eyes and canine stature

  • I feel like the most eery thing about this song is that you really believe him when he says "but it never really bothers me." Lyrical dissonance at it's finest.

  • The lyrics to this song are just too disturbing to me.....damn that great melody and music......I have to listen to this all alone and cannot share it :(

  • EveryManHybrid brought me here...

i think im in love :o

  • My friend describing this song to me: "So there's this guy, and he get's married and everything is great. And then he's all 'Sex makes babies?!' And the mother dies, and then he kills the kids. And the whole thing is really catchy..."

  • whats the sequel to this song my teacher showed it to us in class i know wtf right? lol but yeah and she was gonna show us sequel but time ran out so ive been looking for it and idk what its called

  • @byakuyakuchiki1129 haha the Hazards of Love 3 (Revenge!) is sort of the sequel, because it's from the kids' points of view. But the whole album is connected like a story :)

  • @Ameliano45 that's because it's a concept album

  • @byakuyakuchiki1129 A little late but it's not really a sequel, just a song from the childrens' perspective: "Hazards of Love (Revenge!)".

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • This song was so good live!

  • THE RAKE!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • The people saying this song is about being right wing are retarded. It is about being left wing to the point of abandoning ones responsibilities. A Rake is a libertine for fuck's sake.

  • Yes - all right wing people are like this FOOL!!!

  • Found this band from my dad, he found it from their song "Down By The Water," he got that song from a Chili's bathroom. XD

  • @mirella1128 so everyone who is right-wing murders children and hates their family?

    :l

  • @mirella1128 .... Wow it definitely doesn't. Good try.

  • @mirella1128 your obiviously one of those people who read way too much into things.

  • Fascist song! Clues alright right right! right of the ideological spectrum

  • Why must a song about killing little kids have to be so catchy that I can't help singing it out loud? All of a sudden, people think I have "issues." *eye roll* XD

  • Probably not the best to start listening to during the Casey Anthony scandal, but I really like this song.

  • Woah. I found this through EverymanHYBRID....

And this is INDIE music? I love Modest Mouse, and now I find this? Goddamn, Indie Music is the best genre.

  • Met the band in Raleigh, NC early this month. Made my life, and it lifted my dads spirits after being laid off!

  • My teacher says she knows this band personaly and got me hooked on them XD

  • 15 people killed their children.

  • The people who disliked this deserve to have their bodies burned for incurring my wrath.

  • if you think about it, this song is disturbing....but good disturbing for the decembertists are the best band ever!!!!!!!

  • If I ever (god forbid) produce offspring, I assume I will be the female equivalent of this.

I probably won't burn any bodies, though. I'd eat them so they serve a purpose after nine months of their stronghold.

In all seriousness, awesome song. The decemberists are my favorite band.

  • wow...

  • Absolutely in awe of this album - a lovely marriage of brash Americana and ye olde English traditional lore.

  • @grey98202 yea i know that he kills his kids but its not only about it. i havent seem them live. ive heard theyre wonderful tho

  • @grey98202 its not about killing his kids, its about why he hates love and why he proceeds to attempt to destroy the narrator and the womans love. the whole album is a rock opera with a fantastic story. give the whole thing a listen sometime its great

  • The drums are great when they do this live, they put on a brilliant show.

  • wow um sick, but pretty good song

  • Dude, have you never heard of condoms?

    Great song though

  • @Smalls2233 my first thought. An unclear concept of how babies are made, perhaps? He did make it sound like she would just suddenly pop babies out for no apparent reason.

  • @previouslyadjetive

The whole album is set in victorian age. They didn't have condoms, and even if they did, it's probably against christian beliefs.

  • @rubbereruben Birth control has been around for thousands of years, though. And I'm pretty sure baby killing is also against christian beliefs, but he was fine with that.

  • @previouslyadjetive Birth Control in its many forms may have been around for thousands of years but that doesn't mean people haven't tried to outlaw it. Check out the Comstock Laws and how many people were put in jail just for trying to distribute birth control.

  • @previouslyadjetive I think the mention of "whetting his thirst" in the second stanza is a reference to his appetite for sex. So he was pretty clear on how babies are made.

  • @HBNplague people have been banging eachother long before they had any sort of concept about what a father was.

  • I LOVE IT

    I LOVE BABIES.

  • The children come back for revenge before he can do any harm to Margaret. (I think)

  • THEY NEED TO DO WAY INSTAIN FATHER WHO KILL THIER BABBIES, BECAUSE THESE BABBY CAN FRIGTH BACK BUT EASILY BEST?

  • this is like

    amazing

it's the most epic and musically fulfilling dead baby joke ever

  • Comment removed

  • 14 people fought but were easily bested.

  • i just started listening to the Decemberists and i cant believe i gone this long and not know about them! they are AMAZING ! anyone have a suggestion about other good albums/songs?

  • hahaaa I love this song. The lyrics are just so dark. EVERYONE sings along to this one at gigs- it's one of the Decemberists' more macabre songs.

  • Folk Metal?

  • My favorite song about child murder that isn't found on a Nick Cave album.

  • Hilarious. I think i shall sing this song to my baby brother. tee-hee.

"until her womb started spiling out babies, did i recon my curse" too good. you'd never know he was talking about killing babies if you didn't hear the lyrics. sounds a bit festive.

  • Why do people use the Like button?

  • Why do people use the Like button?

  • @rogersdodgerz cause they like it and the people that posted the video need feed back on it. and the like is like a vote

  • I play this song every night for my daughter. such a soothing tune :)

    Im kidding of course.

  • I like how it's sickening, yet alluring at the same time. The song makes me feel like it's me, even though I'm not even a man or likely to do something so horrible.

  • humble narrator?

    alex delarge?

    a clockwork orange?

    :D

  • rofl

  • rofl v v

  • Haunting.

  • Reading through the comments it seems many people were very disturbed by this song. And that's a good thing, really... It says something about the power of art, and the talent of The Decembrists that they can move so many so deeply. But those in the know will recognize that "murder ballads" played a huge part in the traditions of folk music, until the Victorian, and were brought into this century by people too poor or uneducated to know they weren't supposed to like them anymore...

  • I have a different recording of them singing this song but could never understand one word: "...what can one do when one is a WIDOWER..." On my recording it sounds like "wedge whir" and I always wondered about that one word. Now it seems so obvious... duh!

  • is he supposedto be a vampire? this song is good but has creepy lyrics!

  • @killeragnew, definitely the best euphemism for infanticide ever.

  • Best song on the album. No one writes lyrics like these! "So my burden I began to divest"? Amazing!

  • Oh damn, I love this song. I'm a flamin liberal too roflmao

  • i obviously dont think that the decemberists are telling their own personal story here but i'm quite confused as why you'd want to sing about this. still a great song though

  • @jvanv09 Listen to all of The Hazards of Love. It is a fantastic rock-opera and this song fits into the story line. The Rake is one of the villains in the story. It is a brilliant piece of work :)

  • @meslaura Thanks!!!

  • 13 people haven't killed their kids yet

  • horribly awesome song.

  • For some reason, my 8th grade English teacher played this song. It was supposed to teach us something that I wasn`t sure about because, well. I was too busy rocking out to it. Everyone thought I was crazy. 3 out of 35 kids actually liked it.

<3333 New favorite band? YES :)

  • Just played this at The Olympia in Montreal, they did such a great job.

  • This song sounds AMAZING LIVE!!!

They have lead guitar, base, and the other 4 on different drums.

I heard it Monday night at the Beacon theatre in NY..

If you can get to their concert, cross your fingers that they play it...

  • this song was SOOOO good live. just like everything else The Decmeberists do

  • Sorry, Katherine DUNN

  • You can get this type of music from people in Portland, Oregon.

  • @spacegirl996

Portland climate must be helpful to creativity. Just think about such novelists as Katherine Dunne, or Chuck Palahniuk (though he was born in Pasco, Washington)

  • @HelenaTroubleyn Oh yeah. I live 15 minutes from it and its crazy (Traffic, number of people, the amount of walking). But Im never bored there. No matter the season there is always something to do. OMSI, Powell's Bookstore, some random event going on there. And the people! Once saw a man in a bear costume walk like its the most normal thing to see.

  • @HelenaTroubleyn And elliot smith =)

  • obviously there are 12 people who have not found the joy in baby killing. haha :)

  • @dmacforMVP I'm upset he didn't eat the babies. What a waste.

  • this is why you should use condoms kids.

  • this reminds me of the country death song by the violent femmes. im sure if this song was out when i was little my dad would have sung this to me along with that one.

  • Baby killing is AWWRIGHT

  • My son gave my wife and I tickets to the Decemberists in Boston in Jan, He is a great kid and I won't drown him in the bath.

  • @plusbabs So did you drown him or what?

  • @plusbabs youre supposed to drown them in wells because then nobody can get them out >:D

  • @plusbabs foxglove is still option you know... take it as joke :D

  • The album is a story it's not just about "killing babies"

  • By far the best Decemberists song [=

  • One of my friends plays this song but she changed the chords a bit and it sounds great both ways...the song is a bit disturbing and I love it!

  • Someone should play this at a pro-life rally (even though they're against killing fetuses I'm sure they wouldn't approve of this either)

  • Another piece of musical genius by the Decemberists. This song is just so awesome! I like the tempo and the melody. As to it being about killing children, well...the Decemberists often have songs which contain subjects that are offensive to people. Like rape, which occurs fairly often. It's best to just look past it and appreciate the music for being so great.

  • I totally found out about this song through EverymanHYBRID.

  • @garrison1227 In honesty, I knew it before EverymanHYBRID, but their use was pure brilliance.

  • This song is part of an album of songs that tell a story. If you jump up and down about this song being terrible because it tells you kill children, you need to do a little research before embarrassing yourself here.

  • THE RAKE. THE RAAAAAAKE

    great song

  • this song is simply genius..hate it if you will. the lyrics are sad sure, but the composing is well thought of and flowing with the lyrics. its very real, we may not do these actions, but hating your brother is the same as killing him. we do this everyday.

  • Sure, this songs lyrics are creepy, but simply from a musical perspective, this song is amazing. The repitition of the chords, the "all rights", and the epic moment when the drums come in just make this song so energetic and awesome.

  • i just got my girl pregers so im boned. im so mad i wanna punch babiees

  • i just got my girl pregers so im boned ////////long live the k.o.a.

  • I fucking love it. I imagine all the moms and dads across the world simultaneously thinking and doing this on a grand scale. LOL. I know this is how they feel some days, honestly. They do.

  • I like listening to this song when I'm really pissed at somebody. It makes the moment all dramatic and creepy.

  • This song is my very, very guilty pleasure. :(

And also the first song I ever learned how to play on guitar.

Which is bad, because people are like, "Oh! You can play a guitar? What songs can you play?"

    "Yep, and the Rake's Song."

"Never heard of that song, what is it?"

"It's a song about.......uh............" (AND HERE IS WHERE YOU CHANGE THE SUBJECT REALLY QUICKLY.)

  • Their finest 3 minutes , Alright , alight , alright!

  • Jeez, why's everyone shitting bricks about the lyrics. It's like The Shankhill Brothers. Creepy, but awesome.

  • This is a darn good song with excellent lyrics. I like the creepiness! :)

  • Every hear a mariners revenge song by the decemberist. gives me a chill every time. no better story telling band out there today

  • @RTDURAZO You R so right....I just learned about them tru my 17 year old son and I am so amzed by these guys...I really like the moms part of 'The Mariners Revenge'

All of their songs have great story telling lyrics...great talent...even Stephen Colbert can see....'

  • reminds me of a clockwork orange :)

  • This is pretty awesome. I never heard of this band till today. I'm impressed. [=

  • When I heard this in that one EverymanHYBRID video I nearly shat bricks.

  • BRilliant Song ... from a BRILLIANT album. To understand the song, you have to listen to the album, take it in it's context. Reminds me of "Murder Ballads" by Nick Cave.

  • I love it !

  • This is a horrible story... but I love it

  • My boyfriend dedicated this song to me. LOL

  • incompetently competent

  • @incompetentlyme dont know many more words huh?

  • God I love The Decemberists. My friend and I's new favorite hobby is to count the deaths of each song. xD

  • I am New to this band and I find I love their dark humor and wild untamed stories , finally someone isn't just writing the same old boring love songs again and again. I love the driving beat and chorus in this song , it hammers home the twisted unfeeling logic of the story teller. {that is the character ... not the lead singer ]

  • Its part of a rock Opera. If you listen to The Hazards of Love you'd learn that the rake song is part of a whole story. Don't complain.

    These guys are so brilliant.

  • Some of the most interesting lyrics I have ever heard, it takes guts to write like this

  • ~ love this song.......he's vocie is hot sexy lol~

  • a song about killing babies? FINALLY!!!

  • @Kmachine12 guess you never heard "last caress" by the misfits.

  • @loboisfuzzy I guess you never heard of the rakes song by the Decemberists.

  • @Kmachine12 huh?

  • @loboisfuzzy Dont tell me how to live my life!!!

  • @Kmachine12 I love you.

  • @loboisfuzzy I love you too, son.

  • @Kmachine12 Hurray!

  • @Kmachine12 oh yea, there is also "i hate children" by the adolescents.

  • @Kmachine12 Last Caress by Metallica.

  • @FurElise47 No thank you.

  • @FurElise47 last caress is by the misfits fail

    metallica sucks

  • this song is just haunting... i love it

  • stop getting butthurt, all their songs are stories, get the fuck over it

  • Best song for a really BAD day... like today. Love it!!

  • Anyone who is bashing the Decembrists needs to know they write stories for their songs..that is what is so great about indie music mainstream forgets how to be different once in awhile......

  • The album is excellent. It is a continuous story so this track is completely out of context on its own. Agreed this character has to be the most evil in modern music - he has to be given what he does in the story but he gets what he deserves from the story's hero..

  • This is my first time hearing this particular song and let me tell you, many goosebumps were had.

    This is beautifully haunting. <3

  • I Like It:)

  • Oh do grow up, irony and allegory.......... watch you don't burn yersel with the irony.

  • This is one of the most fucked up and beautiful things i have ever heard.

  • @SpaceKace01 agreed...

  • I love this album...so much.

  • Love The Decemberists. Amazing album. A

Anyone who is bashing the lyrics for its content is a fool and needs to research the album and band. The Decemberists are master story tellers in song form.

  • theres a massive story that goes throughout the entire album.. guy kills his children because his wife dies, doesn't think that he'll get haunted. captures a guys love interest, so the other guy chases after him but theres a river in the way, so he practically says "if you let me pass now when i return you can have my bones, so then he goes and stabs the guy who kills his children and then he gets haunted by his children in his afterlife

  • This is part of a Rock Opera album, Google it. this is part of a series of songs that make a story.

Dont bash a good band just because you dont know them

  • Just heard this band yesterday. So bloody briliant, got all their album's this morning. Love this damn band. XD

  • rnt there violins in this song?

  • Check out my cover on my channel

  • haha killing babies :) WHOO HOO!
