If you read the lyrics carefully, they relate to fascism. Strong dominate the weak with no remorse in this case the father vs. his children. The chorus "Alright" hints a Right wing thought as Fascism is completely Right Wing. Just throwing this out there.

Reading through the comments it seems many people were very disturbed by this song. And that's a good thing, really... It says something about the power of art, and the talent of The Decembrists that they can move so many so deeply. But those in the know will recognize that "murder ballads" played a huge part in the traditions of folk music,until the Victorian, and were brought into this century by people too poor or uneducated to know they weren't supposed to like them anymore...

Another piece of musical genius by the Decemberists. This song is just so awesome! I like the tempo and the melody. As to it being about killing children, well...the Decemberists often have songs which contain subjects that are offensive to people. Like rape, which occurs fairly often. It's best to just look past it and appreciate the music for being so great.
