hey rake i remember you yeah im that guy that gave you your name....yeah i was holding you off with a rake than you said you just wanted to know where the slender man went then i told you he was with the mothman because Jesus owed you $20 dollars.
I feel like the most eery thing about this song is that you really believe him when he says "but it never really bothers me." Lyrical dissonance at it's finest.
The lyrics to this song are just too disturbing to me.....damn that great melody and music......I have to listen to this all alone and cannot share it :(
My friend describing this song to me: "So there's this guy, and he get's married and everything is great. And then he's all 'Sex makes babies?!' And the mother dies, and then he kills the kids. And the whole thing is really catchy..."
whats the sequel to this song my teacher showed it to us in class i know wtf right? lol but yeah and she was gonna show us sequel but time ran out so ive been looking for it and idk what its called
@byakuyakuchiki1129 haha the Hazards of Love 3 (Revenge!) is sort of the sequel, because it's from the kids' points of view. But the whole album is connected like a story :)
The people saying this song is about being right wing are retarded. It is about being left wing to the point of abandoning ones responsibilities. A Rake is a libertine for fuck's sake.

If you read the lyrics carefully, they relate to fascism. Strong dominate the weak with no remorse in this case the father vs. his children. The chorus "Alright" hints a Right wing thought as Fascism is completely Right Wing. Just throwing this out there.
Why must a song about killing little kids have to be so catchy that I can't help singing it out loud? All of a sudden, people think I have "issues." *eye roll* XD
@grey98202 its not about killing his kids, its about why he hates love and why he proceeds to attempt to destroy the narrator and the womans love. the whole album is a rock opera with a fantastic story. give the whole thing a listen sometime its great
@Smalls2233 my first thought. An unclear concept of how babies are made, perhaps? He did make it sound like she would just suddenly pop babies out for no apparent reason.
@rubbereruben Birth control has been around for thousands of years, though. And I'm pretty sure baby killing is also against christian beliefs, but he was fine with that.
@previouslyadjetive Birth Control in its many forms may have been around for thousands of years but that doesn't mean people haven't tried to outlaw it. Check out the Comstock Laws and how many people were put in jail just for trying to distribute birth control.
@previouslyadjetive I think the mention of "whetting his thirst" in the second stanza is a reference to his appetite for sex. So he was pretty clear on how babies are made.
i just started listening to the Decemberists and i cant believe i gone this long and not know about them! they are AMAZING ! anyone have a suggestion about other good albums/songs?
Hilarious. I think i shall sing this song to my baby brother. tee-hee.
"until her womb started spiling out babies, did i recon my curse" too good. you'd never know he was talking about killing babies if you didn't hear the lyrics. sounds a bit festive.
I like how it's sickening, yet alluring at the same time. The song makes me feel like it's me, even though I'm not even a man or likely to do something so horrible.
Reading through the comments it seems many people were very disturbed by this song. And that's a good thing, really... It says something about the power of art, and the talent of The Decembrists that they can move so many so deeply. But those in the know will recognize that "murder ballads" played a huge part in the traditions of folk music, until the Victorian, and were brought into this century by people too poor or uneducated to know they weren't supposed to like them anymore...
I have a different recording of them singing this song but could never understand one word: "...what can one do when one is a WIDOWER..." On my recording it sounds like "wedge whir" and I always wondered about that one word. Now it seems so obvious... duh!
i obviously dont think that the decemberists are telling their own personal story here but i'm quite confused as why you'd want to sing about this. still a great song though
@jvanv09 Listen to all of The Hazards of Love. It is a fantastic rock-opera and this song fits into the story line. The Rake is one of the villains in the story. It is a brilliant piece of work :)
For some reason, my 8th grade English teacher played this song. It was supposed to teach us something that I wasn`t sure about because, well. I was too busy rocking out to it. Everyone thought I was crazy. 3 out of 35 kids actually liked it.
Portland climate must be helpful to creativity. Just think about such novelists as Katherine Dunne, or Chuck Palahniuk (though he was born in Pasco, Washington)
@HelenaTroubleyn Oh yeah. I live 15 minutes from it and its crazy (Traffic, number of people, the amount of walking). But Im never bored there. No matter the season there is always something to do. OMSI, Powell's Bookstore, some random event going on there. And the people! Once saw a man in a bear costume walk like its the most normal thing to see.
this reminds me of the country death song by the violent femmes. im sure if this song was out when i was little my dad would have sung this to me along with that one.
Another piece of musical genius by the Decemberists. This song is just so awesome! I like the tempo and the melody. As to it being about killing children, well...the Decemberists often have songs which contain subjects that are offensive to people. Like rape, which occurs fairly often. It's best to just look past it and appreciate the music for being so great.
This song is part of an album of songs that tell a story. If you jump up and down about this song being terrible because it tells you kill children, you need to do a little research before embarrassing yourself here.
this song is simply genius..hate it if you will. the lyrics are sad sure, but the composing is well thought of and flowing with the lyrics. its very real, we may not do these actions, but hating your brother is the same as killing him. we do this everyday.
Sure, this songs lyrics are creepy, but simply from a musical perspective, this song is amazing. The repitition of the chords, the "all rights", and the epic moment when the drums come in just make this song so energetic and awesome.

BRilliant Song ... from a BRILLIANT album. To understand the song, you have to listen to the album, take it in it's context. Reminds me of "Murder Ballads" by Nick Cave.
I am New to this band and I find I love their dark humor and wild untamed stories , finally someone isn't just writing the same old boring love songs again and again. I love the driving beat and chorus in this song , it hammers home the twisted unfeeling logic of the story teller. {that is the character ... not the lead singer ]
Anyone who is bashing the Decembrists needs to know they write stories for their songs..that is what is so great about indie music mainstream forgets how to be different once in awhile......
The album is excellent. It is a continuous story so this track is completely out of context on its own. Agreed this character has to be the most evil in modern music - he has to be given what he does in the story but he gets what he deserves from the story's hero..
Anyone who is bashing the lyrics for its content is a fool and needs to research the album and band. The Decemberists are master story tellers in song form.
theres a massive story that goes throughout the entire album.. guy kills his children because his wife dies, doesn't think that he'll get haunted. captures a guys love interest, so the other guy chases after him but theres a river in the way, so he practically says "if you let me pass now when i return you can have my bones, so then he goes and stabs the guy who kills his children and then he gets haunted by his children in his afterlife
Hopefully the Rake doesnt come after me for listening to this song.

Love The Decemberists. Amazing album. A
Anyone who is bashing the lyrics for its content is a fool and needs to research the album and band.

This is part of a Rock Opera album, Google it. this is part of a series of songs that make a story.
Dont bash a good band just because you dont know them
