Actually the 'wave' isn't radiation. It's a pressure wave from the initial blast itself. Depending on the megaton of the warhead, the pressure wave can be near 2 million PSI. If THAT doesn't kill you the the heat alone will kill you, like in Terminator 2 and if you somehow survive that the radioactive fallout will kill you.
