  • I am so disappointed! I keep getting directed to your videos - but this is NOT the way to weave in yarn ends as you go, It adds bulk and distorts the fabric. I am an experienced knitter - but looking for very advanced information on stranded colourwork. Guess I'll keep looking! May even have to work it out and post my own :-)

  • Perfect explanation! I started knitting a few weeks ago and have been itching to add colors to my projects, this tutorial is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!

  • Thank you VERY much! You explained it very well! This is exactly what I needed! THANK YOU!

  • Thank you so much, your video is way more helpful than the other videos that i've found on youtube! Exactly what i was looking for, If you want alternating colors on the same row, you would just approach it the same way you change colors from row to row right (assuming the color in a previous row) ?

  • Thank you this is exactly what I needed to continue on with a project I'm working on.

  • @dleroischmidt

I'm glad my video helped you and I hope you'll keep watching and like me on facebook. thanks.

  • is this magic loop knit and can u change colors in a magic loop knit

  • @bunnyz324

magic loop is when you have fewer stitches and the needle is longer. it all works the same way when you're adding color or doing anything on a circular. happy knitting and please like me on my facebook page.

  • thanks for all your videos Judy, they helped me so much! Now, when making a hat do i need to make sure my circular needles are a certain diameter? I'be been hesitant to make a hat because I'm just afraid,m some patterns justsay size 8 circ needles.maybe i'll try ahaton straights first and sew the ends. Again, love, love, love your tutorials.

  • @Themillerwhites

glad you like the videos and hope you've attempted knitting a hat on circulars by now. much easier than on straight ones. please keep watching and look for me on facebook.

  • If I add a new color, and knit that color for say... 10 rows, when I go back to switch to the original color, wont there be a length of yarn stretching from the last row of color 1 across the 10 rows of color 2? Is there any way to avoid that? Or is that not an issue?

  • @Meerkatkid14

yes, it is an issue. pull the old color up every few rows, and twist it so it will be at the top when you're ready to use it again. otherwise you would need to cut it and weave it in later.

  • @knittingtipsbyjudy

I had the same question as "Meerkatkid" above; found the answer on your video "4 Row Stripes."

Just wanted to say thank you for making knitting fun! :)

  • Am I correct in assuming that when you're changing the colours on circular needles, the row number is irrelevant? This is my first time knitting with circular needles, and yeah.

  • @strag2001

when you knit on circular needles you are actually knitting one long spiral. use a marker to show the beginning of a row though. have fun knitting. please keep watching and like me on facebook.

  • Thank you sinning for this video! This technique is exactly what I needed! Thank you!!

  • @usarmywife00

I'm glad to know the video helped you. Please keep watching and look for me on facebook too.

  • I love you!! I'm a beginner knitter and I've used so many of your videos to make beautiful scarves (tunic stitch, bamboo stitch, and twisted stockinette) thank you so much for your awesome tutorials and I've learned how to add color and so much more from you. I wanted to make a hat and looking at the pattern I was shocked and thought I couldn't do it. After watching your tutorials on using circular needles I'm very confident now and I just wanted to thank you for helping me improve my knitting!!

  • @Feddy112

thank you for such a lovely note. I'm so happy to hear how well you've done already. Please keep watching and look for me on facebook too.

  • so when i'm ready to add 2nd color or 3rd color, i do not have to cut the yarn of the 1st color or so on when i change color.

  • @LovetoKnitable

    you are correct.

  • so, when I knit the new yarn in, the first three stitches are basically {holding two as one} and that automatically weaves in my end? I'm REALLY new at this. I want to do it right!!

  • Your tutorials have saved this knitter more than once! I knit when I was a child, my mother taught me, but I stopped doing it at about 10 years old..15 years later my mind needs a bit of a refresher course and your tutorials are definitely a HUGE help!

    Thank you so much, Judy!

  • @p0nyexpr3ss

thanks for the nice note. glad you started knitting again. please keep watching and look for me on facebook too.

  • Judy - love this video on knitting with color changes in the round, but I have a problem. I'm making a striped hat in k1p1 ribbing. I've tried to add another color at the beginning of the round after purling the last stitch and tried even adding it after knitting the first stitch in the first color (which means I'm trying to purl the new color in), but I'm ending up with a hole in the work! How in the world do I solve this problem? I would appreciate your help!! Thanks!

  • @mncoomer07

make sure you put the old color under the new and twist it so there can be no hole. watch the video again to see how I do it. eventually it will make sense.

    good luck.

  • Hi Judy, I just noticed you slipped the first white stitch, why did you do that? Is it important to do it? Can I avoid it and knit the new color in?

  • @barbylucedistelle

Please watch my video E-MAIL QUESTIONS ANSWERED. I talk about slipping the first stitch and other tips.

  • I'm trying to find your video on jogless stripes but don't seem to see it. Did you end up making one?

  • @thedelicateterror

    ohhh, not yet. sorry.

  • @knittingtipsbyjudy i'll just keep checking back. your tutorials are so clear and helpful.

  • I am knitting a beanie and when I add a different color yarn, the yarn is not matching up. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Please, help.

  • what do you mean that the color isn't matching up?

  • When I add a different color yarn on the beanie. That stripe of yarn is not lining up when I'm done. It's coming out uneven.

  • do you mean you're getting a little jog? that never bothers me, but I'm doing a video on jogless stripes. keep watching.

  • Yes, a jog. I will look out for your jogless video. Thanks.

  • I thought I was doing it wrong but apparently I'm doing it right.. however, I'm knitting a scarf in the round, so a tube scarf... with 70 stitches, and 19 rounds per block of colour. My problem is that whenever I join the colour, and continue knitting, when I look back on it after a few rounds, it's almost as if they don't meet up at the colour change.. the first round of the new colour that is. Is that normal?

  • maybe you're not pulling the yarn tight enough when you make the change.

  • Hmm.. well I do knit for two rounds, then pull the ends into an overhand knot into the inside of the tube.. but.. I figured it out! I was doing regular stripes.. not stationary jogless stripes. I would use traveling jogless stripes but the weight of the wool and stripe size doesn't seem appropriate for those.

  • were you doing the harry potter scarf also?

  • @ColleenAIMusic Yes, I was! :)

  • haha! Yah, i am doing it right now! which house scarf did you make?

  • How many stitches do you generally do for beanie hats? My friend just turned 14 and I'm trying to knit her a hat to match the scarf I made for her. My book said 80ish was a good number but I'm using bulky yarn and in the pictures it looks like they're using the real fine kind for baby things.

  • @ThePsssshhhhShow, I found for worsted weight yarn, and using size 4-6 needles...100-120 is good for a beanie. always consider when you want to decide the number of stitches, by if it divisible, such as if you have a knit 3 purl 2 rib, and it decreases to 4 sides, you would want to make sure you choose a number that divides by 5 and 4, like 100. If the pattern is a knit 2 purl 2, you only have to make sure it divides by 4...100 104 108 112 etc

  • Hi Judy...

Can I use the same technique to change colors when knitting with double-pointed needles? I'm knitting a pair of striped leg warmers for my twin toddlers.

I always learn so much from your videos. Thank you!

  • Hi Judy, I'm just wondering what you did with the yarn from the pink colour when the hat was finished? Did you just cut it off or did you have to weave it into the inside if the hat with a crochet needle. I'm new to the world of knitting but I'm hooked!!

  • NEVER just cut off yarn. Well, cut it, leave a strand long enough to weave it in, and you'll be fine. Watch my video, how to weave in ends, if you haven't already.

Welcome to the world of knitting.

  • Hi, I've got a question. I'm knitting a hat right now on circular needles & it has three colors knit in ten rows for each color (so like knit 10 rows red, knit 10 blue, knit 10 green, repeat over and over). I noticed that on this video, you leave both colors attached & switch between them - would I do the same for my project even though there's more space between the colors than only a row or two? Or do i cut my old yarn & bring it back in later and just have a bunch of ends to weave in? Thanks!

  • Yes, keep pulling the yarn up and twisting it every few rows. That way you don't have to cut it and won't have to weave it in at the end. This will now be added to my list of videos that I need to do thanks to your question. I appreciate it. Happy knitting!

  • Thanks, that would be a great video! Everyone seems to tell you how to bring color in, but no one tells you want to do with the extra color when you need to bring it back a little later!

  • Keep watching. I haven't gotten to it yet, but I will.

  • Not that I know of. Do you have double pointed needles? good luck.

  • Hi I just have a random question for you. I can't find my circular needles, so i was wondering if there is any way you could knit in a circle on straight needles.

    Love the videos!Thanks!
