Wow! it looks so easy… Do you think I might be able to do that on my 1998 Ford ZX2? I think it has 2 of these converters, although I'm not really sure.
That looked so effortless! I have a 2000 Subaru Forester that has a bad catalytic converter. A mechanic quoted me $895 to switch it out. I know the converter is part of that price but it can't cost that much! I've been told that sometimes people have to saw it off and weld the new on in. Is that the case with the Forester?
You’re car has two catalytic converters, replacing the rear one would be similar to the one in the video, the front one is attached to the turbo. Good luck!!
I was just told that the rear bank catalytic converter was bad on my wife's 2003 Infiniti i35 and the exhaust pipe would need replacing too. Is the process similar?
I drove up to Edwardsville, Pennsylvania from Merrillville, Indiana its about a 682 mile trip one way. And When I got here I found out my catalytic converter is shot or clogged either way I need a new one. But I'm tight on money up here and am wondering would it be safe for my car (A 03 Toyota Matrix) to drive it back while it's like this? What could happen? And could I repair it the same way as on this video?
The procedure to replace the catalytic converter in your 03 Matrix is similar to the one in the video. If your catalytic converter is clogged I would not drive it another 682 miles.
Your 02 Sonata has two catalytic converters, one is a part of the exhaust manifold and the other one is a part of the exhaust pipe. To replace the one that is a part of the exhaust pipe would be similar to the one in the video. Good luck!
This procedure is the same depending on what model civic you have. If your catalytic converter is a part of the exhaust manifold then the procedure is different.
My 2004 Nissan Maximum gets 182,000 miles and currently has a problem of "can not speed up (max speed is 40 mph)". Auto repair says it needs to replace catalytic converter, rear O2 sensor, rear Gasket, front O ring and Air Fuel ratio sensors. Is it worth to spend $1200 on the 182,000 miles car? How long the car will keep running after the replacement? Will the same or different problems can occur in the near future?? Your help is highly appreciated!
It's a personal opinion as far as if it is worth spending $1200 on your car, one thing to keep in mind is the higher the mileage and the older the car gets the more problems you’re going to most likely face. With that said you will need to make the final decision. Good luck!!
Where is the converter located on a 2000 honda civic ex --- near the front engine or middle of the car? I ask because I'm told the cost to replace is greater if its near the engine .... but I think with the converter being contained in the heat shield our converter must be located towards the engine.
hey man thanks for the vid it really helped but the things is the bolts on my 2001 acura integra(for the catalytic) is rusted and wont come out at all and the last 3 towards the back are different so i need help please and thank u
I'm sort of a newly empowered female beginner mechanic, and after watching your video, you have made me feel as though I have the ability to do these otherwise costly operations myself, saving a lot of money. I am curious - was the catalytic converter you used called a direct fit converter? Thanks for a great video.
The catalytic converter that we used in the video was a Honda factory part. I would defiantly get a direct fit converter if it's available. Good Luck!!
I'm getting ready to install a magnaflow catalytic converter but i'm still using my stock muffler. customization is always possible right when it comes to exhaust systems?
ive seen a lot of people that remove their catalytic converters and muffler for more power, once i removed my catback to see how the car would perform and it was a disaster, lost quite a bit of power. what has to be done to gain power from exhaust?
I would recommend buying an aftermarket exhaust system, rather than running no exhaust. This should give you will give you a little increase in horse power.
Great video, I have a 99 montero sport with a filing cat. I would like to repair it myself but I'm located in California where they don't sell over the counter cats, any suggestions on how I could fix?
I have the 2002 Base Model Mazda Millenia. I've been told there are 2 catalytic converters. Will the process be the same for replacing both converters.
It looks like your Mazda Millenia has two front converters and one rear converter. Replacing the rear one is the same basic procedure as the one in the video, the front converters are a part of the exhaust manifold and is a little different from the one in the video, however pretty straight forward. Good Luck!!
I have a Saturn 2003 l200. Will the process of replacing the cat be the same as the video or similar? I know the O2 sensors are in front and behind the cat.
My car (2001 nissan sentra gxe 1.8 liter engine) is giving the "inefficient cat" error. The car was misfiring for a while until I got that taken car of so I figure its actually the cat and not the oxygen sensors. I go to order the part online though and one cat has 2 intakes and another has just one, how do I tell which I need?
I would contact the company you’re trying to purchase the converter from and talk to them, because the one you’re described dose not sound like the right one. Good Luck!!
This must be a like new converter because the ones we get in the shop have badly rusted mounting bolts, shields either rusted or have fallen off, etc...
No problem the procedure for your Sebring very similar to the one in the video; however your catalytic converter(s) may be attached to the exhaust manifold (if so they are still just bolted into place). Good Luck!
The catalytic converter in your Maxima bolts in like the one in the video, so you could replace it if you’re up to it. It should take about one hour to replace. Good luck!!
That’s totally up to you, the factory one will probably fit better and may last longer but it will definitely cost more than an aftermarket one. Just my two cents!
Great ideas for my 2000 Corolla, they show EASTERN CATALYTIC CONVERTERS Part # 40243 and MagnaFlow Direct-Fit Catalytic Converter Part # 23881. I was leaning towards the Magna flow for performance, but I read on a forum that the clamp that attaches Catalytic to the front pipe does not work correctly since clamp is made for the factory converter (thinner) and I dont weld at all. Any ideas which one is a direct fit, I want to replace it from the converter to the muffler without any problems,
just go park your car down in long beach over night, in the morning it will magically be gone, my brothers was stolen last weekend in long beach, beware!
What if my catalyctic converter is insanely rusty on the bolts there is no possible way for me to take it out and the mechanic wants $600 to repair it when i found the same replacement part for $250 can somebody please tell me anyways to get all the rust off, thank you.
@NinjaRuben I would do two things, I would soak it on PB Blaster for a good half hour and try to take them out using 6 point sockets and if that did not work I would pull out my drill and drill the centers of the 2 or 3 bolts. Wala, you are all set to go. Just an FYI, sometimes some part dealers can sell you the entire kit as opposed to just doing the converter.
If the bolts are rusted you can try soaking them in penetrating oil for a while then try to remove them. Another option is to heat the bolts up and try to remove them or cut them off and use new bolts if possible. Good Luck!!
I been reading about catalytic converter cleaner called SOLDER-IT CATALYTIC CONVERTER CLEANER & DEODORIZER, what is your opinion on this stuff? Another person also uses basic household chemicals. Now I seen guys take it off and wash it, but hey did all that, I prefer a new one. Let me know what you think, you seem to be very smart.
Bolts between the resonator pipe and muffler or converter and resonator pipe? I do see one between resonator pipe and muffler, but none elsewhere. Maybe it was replaced like you said.
Yes you are right, I did see a rusty clamp between the converter and the pipe that goes to the engine. On the other side, I did not see no clamps, it continues on until I see two more bolts, the resonator pipe attached to the muffler. They do seel the complete deal (minus the muffler) with free shipping for $170.00 (shop quoted $200 just for the converter). For that money I can replace the whole thing myself. Replacement pipe goes all the way to the engine and those bolts, are scary.
Thank you once again. Question, I notice on a 2000 Corolla the catalytic is welded by the factory, how can I add a direct fit one without a welder, is there some type of pipes that I can buy to make it work? I need like two 2 or 3 inch converters so one one side I slide it into the old pipe and the other unto the new pipe like plumbe) At Harbor Freights I saw they have a muffler pipe cutter (straight cut) I was thinking maybe I can cut the catalytic converter off on both side and add a new one?
The catalytic converter from the factory has a clamp on the front of the catalytic converter that attaches it to the front pipe and two bolts that attach it to the muffler. If you find a direct replacement catalytic converter it should bolt right into place. If your catalytic converter is welded to the front pipe and the muffler then it was probably replace at one point.
OIC, if the break they can be drilled out, only problem, not a lot of room especially on the left one, maybe I can use a Dremel and drill for hours. My thinking if I am doing 70 percent of it, I might as well do the muffler too. God this project is expensive, all because of that darn converter. Do the pipes come with the holes for the oxygen sensors?
I been checking prices out for the whole pipe lay out. I went under my car and I noticed it has two bolts at the header and one almost seems unreachable. The bolts seem old, rusty and brittle, do you think they will come off if I soak them in PB Blaster? Also it does NOT included a muffler, do you think the new pipe can be attached to the old muffler? BTW, rather pay $500.00 for a direct fit catalytic converter, I rather pay 500 and do the whole thing myself (assuming I can) thanks for the idea.
It's hard to say if the bolts are going to come off or break (you never know) soaking them is highly recommended. The new pipe should bolt right up to the old muffler.
Thank you for the info, I was quoted, 200 from a shop for a universal one. and 580 for a direct fit one from another shop. To be honest, I road bad things of universal ones, they still often trigger the check engine light. I think buying the whole thing and doing it myself might be cheaper than forking over (300 labor) to the mechanic for a 30 minute job. This video is very nice. From where should I buy the whole thing, who has the best prices, Rock Auto? This idea actually sounds great.
I have a 2000 Corolla, it has no bolts, what do you do there? Also, I got a PO420 reading,. how do I know it might be the sensors or this item? Thanks
To replace the catalytic converter in your Corolla you have a couple options, you can replace the converter and all the piping (it comes in one piece) up to the muffler (with doing it this way everything bolts together, but probably more expensive), or you can go to a muffler shop and have them cut out the old converter and weld in a new one. Definition for code P0420 (Catalyst Deterioration).
If you’re going to remove the catalytic converter you will need to install some sort of piping otherwise you will have an exhaust leak. You may also want to check your local emission laws to see if it is legal to remove your catalytic converter.
The entire exhaust system in my '97 Ford Aspire needs to be replaced. The car is only worth $565, but to replace the exhaust system, I've been quoted as high as $2,500.
Your car has two catalytic converters (one is right below the exhaust manifold, the other one is in the same location as the one in the video) if it is the second catalytic converter it will be the same basic procedure.
Removing the cat should not do any damage. However it will defiantly pollute the air, and is illegal in many states (you may want to consider these things before removing).
I have a 1991 Mazda B2200 SE5 and I was wondering if this would work because my vehicle did not pass emissions. I found all the parts I need but I have not attempted to replace it in fear I would not do so properly. Would the process be generally the same as this video?
I have a '87 Chevy K5 Blazer. A local mechanic said my cat con needs to be replaced. Is it a similar process? If it's as simple as this I'd rather do it myself then pay a couple hundred dollars for someone else to do it. Thank You.
I have 2002 Camry 4 Cyl. It is having a CEL and the code is P0420. What could be cause? O2 sensors or Catalytic Converter. I assume I can hear some rattles..may be from Cat con I think.
Is it easy to remove Cat con this model?
Should I replace cat con or clean the current one?
It sounds like you have a bad catalytic converter. It should take about 1 hour to replace it; there is no way to clean the catalytic converter. Good Luck!!
Your catalytic converter is welded into place on your car; unless you know how to weld you might want to take it to a muffler shop to have it replace. Good Luck!!
i have a ? i have a 93 gmc jimmy i can mash on the gas all i want and it seems to like bog down and i have to barely pres the gas to get it goin k but it takes me awhile to get up to speed
It sounds like a clogged exhaust (a bad catalytic converter). You can remove the catalytic converter and see if you truck runs any better and to inspect the catalytic converter.
Awesome video!!! I was just curious.. I have a 2002 Volvo S80 T6 and it needs a Catalytic Converter replaced. Can I buy an off brand, or do I have to buy a volvo brand cat? Also do you know how to replace them? Haha I am sure you get a lot of questions.. anyways great video and keep up the good work!!
Yes you can buy an aftermarket catalytic converter for your Volvo. Replacing the catalytic converter on your Volvo will take more work to replace than the car in the video (more things have to be removed in order to replace the converter). Good Luck!!
Hello, great video. I have a 01 honda accord. I purchased a cat for approx $160. I will attempt to install later. I had to put some pb blast on my bolts because of rust. In your video looks like your jack goes pretty high. What type of jack are you using?
Excellent video! I have a P420 code on my 02 Corolla and estimates have ranged from 1500 to 800 $. I dont have this equipment(bolts, car jack etc)so thinking of buying the part and shopping with local mechanics to fix it if not will come right back to this vide and Do It Myself.
my car has some problem with the cat converter atm. I have a Honda civic 2000 EK model and I'm plannin to visit a wreckers to get the parts for it. Do u have any advice on any particular civic year/model or just need to look for any Civic produced in yr 2000 ?
As far as replacing your catalytic with a used one I don't know what to tell you, here in California that’s not allowed. I would look for a same model year car. Good Luck!
an important question here i think my mechanic wants to rip me off. i have a vw 2003 jetta and he says the catalytix conv is alittle bit more of $1000!! and i went online and it is like 300$ can u guys give the exact price
I have a Honda Accord 2002. I just had the cat converter and the two CO2 sensors replaced. I paid $1400 for parts and labor. Now my car smells like rotten eggs. Is this normal? Will the smell go away?.
The rotten egg smell is from a release of built up hydrogen sufide (H2S) from the reaction of organic sulfur compounds in the gasoline with the catalytic converter. Almost all gasoline contains some amount of organic sulfur compounds. You can try changing the gas that you use it might make a difference. Good Luck!
@carpios u fucking........ omg, i did my own for 300 bucks sir, and its O2 sensor, not CO2 sensor, such thing does not exsist on cars, 175 for a new cat, and 60 bucks for 2 O2 sensors, u people really know how to get ripped off these days eh? white collars... pshhh
I'm curious, my wife has a 2002 pontiac grand am, and the service engine light is on with a cat converter code up. I am looking at replacing it myself, however the bolts are hardcore rusted out. What would you do in this situation? Drill them out or something? Also, its a long piece of pipe that goes all the way up towards the motor, its not like the one here. Are the steps the same? Thanks in advance!

What if my catalyctic converter is insanely rusty on the bolts there is no possible way for me to take it out and the mechanic wants $600 to repair it when i found the same replacement part for $250 can somebody please tell me anyways to get all the rust off, thank you.
NinjaRuben 6 months ago
@NinjaRuben I would do two things, I would soak it on PB Blaster for a good half hour and try to take them out using 6 point sockets and if that did not work I would pull out my drill and drill the centers of the 2 or 3 bolts. Wala, you are all set to go. Just an FYI, sometimes some part dealers can sell you the entire kit as opposed to just doing the converter.
dcfs2005 6 months ago
If the bolts are rusted you can try soaking them in penetrating oil for a while then try to remove them. Another option is to heat the bolts up and try to remove them or cut them off and use new bolts if possible. Good Luck!!

@NinjaRuben GRINDER... new bolts.

Let me know what you think, you seem to be very smart.
dcfs2005 6 months ago
I'm not familiar with catalytic converter cleaners, sorry.

Bolts between the resonator pipe and muffler or converter and resonator pipe? I do see one between resonator pipe and muffler, but none elsewhere. Maybe it was replaced like you said.
dcfs2005 7 months ago
Bolts between the converter/resonator pipe and muffler. Note; I show the converter and resonator in the same pipe.
canobd2 7 months ago
BTW, are you saying that the original has bolts and clamps on both sides?
dcfs2005 7 months ago
Clamp on the engine side and bolts on the muffler side.
canobd2 7 months ago
Yes you are right, I did see a rusty clamp between the converter and the pipe that goes to the engine. On the other side, I did not see no clamps, it continues on until I see two more bolts, the resonator pipe attached to the muffler. They do seel the complete deal (minus the muffler) with free shipping for $170.00 (shop quoted $200 just for the converter). For that money I can replace the whole thing myself. Replacement pipe goes all the way to the engine and those bolts, are scary.
dcfs2005 7 months ago
Thank you once again. Question, I notice on a 2000 Corolla the catalytic is welded by the factory, how can I add a direct fit one without a welder, is there some type of pipes that I can buy to make it work? I need like two 2 or 3 inch converters so one one side I slide it into the old pipe and the other unto the new pipe like plumbe) At Harbor Freights I saw they have a muffler pipe cutter (straight cut) I was thinking maybe I can cut the catalytic converter off on both side and add a new one?
dcfs2005 7 months ago
The catalytic converter from the factory has a clamp on the front of the catalytic converter that attaches it to the front pipe and two bolts that attach it to the muffler. If you find a direct replacement catalytic converter it should bolt right into place. If your catalytic converter is welded to the front pipe and the muffler then it was probably replace at one point.
canobd2 7 months ago
OIC, if the break they can be drilled out, only problem, not a lot of room especially on the left one, maybe I can use a Dremel and drill for hours. My thinking if I am doing 70 percent of it, I might as well do the muffler too. God this project is expensive, all because of that darn converter. Do the pipes come with the holes for the oxygen sensors?
dcfs2005 7 months ago
The replacement pipe should be identical to the original one.
canobd2 7 months ago
I been checking prices out for the whole pipe lay out. I went under my car and I noticed it has two bolts at the header and one almost seems unreachable. The bolts seem old, rusty and brittle, do you think they will come off if I soak them in PB Blaster? Also it does NOT included a muffler, do you think the new pipe can be attached to the old muffler? BTW, rather pay $500.00 for a direct fit catalytic converter, I rather pay 500 and do the whole thing myself (assuming I can) thanks for the idea.
dcfs2005 7 months ago
It's hard to say if the bolts are going to come off or break (you never know) soaking them is highly recommended. The new pipe should bolt right up to the old muffler.
canobd2 7 months ago
Thank you for the info, I was quoted, 200 from a shop for a universal one. and 580 for a direct fit one from another shop. To be honest, I road bad things of universal ones, they still often trigger the check engine light. I think buying the whole thing and doing it myself might be cheaper than forking over (300 labor) to the mechanic for a 30 minute job. This video is very nice. From where should I buy the whole thing, who has the best prices, Rock Auto? This idea actually sounds great.
dcfs2005 7 months ago
No problem, as far as were to buy a new converter I'm not sure, I would do some research and compare prices. Good Luck!!

I have a 2000 Corolla, it has no bolts, what do you do there? Also, I got a PO420 reading,. how do I know it might be the sensors or this item? Thanks
dcfs2005 7 months ago
To replace the catalytic converter in your Corolla you have a couple options, you can replace the converter and all the piping (it comes in one piece) up to the muffler (with doing it this way everything bolts together, but probably more expensive), or you can go to a muffler shop and have them cut out the old converter and weld in a new one. Definition for code P0420 (Catalyst Deterioration).

when removing the cat, which i plan to do on my firebird, do i need to replace it with anything else at all? i wish to no longer have it on.
asheepslife 8 months ago
If you’re going to remove the catalytic converter you will need to install some sort of piping otherwise you will have an exhaust leak. You may also want to check your local emission laws to see if it is legal to remove your catalytic converter.
canobd2 8 months ago
The entire exhaust system in my '97 Ford Aspire needs to be replaced. The car is only worth $565, but to replace the exhaust system, I've been quoted as high as $2,500.

gixxxerk5 8 months ago
Your car has two catalytic converters (one is right below the exhaust manifold, the other one is in the same location as the one in the video) if it is the second catalytic converter it will be the same basic procedure.
canobd2 8 months ago
@canobd2 awsome, thank you so much!

hey, im just wonderin does removing the cat do any damage to the car, or does it just release a lot of emissions?
cause i wana remove the cat on my car cause it makes it sound kool as fuck! :)
its a diesel engine...please reply, thanks :D
Gerard24689 8 months ago
Removing the cat should not do any damage. However it will defiantly pollute the air, and is illegal in many states (you may want to consider these things before removing).

I have a 1991 Mazda B2200 SE5 and I was wondering if this would work because my vehicle did not pass emissions. I found all the parts I need but I have not attempted to replace it in fear I would not do so properly. Would the process be generally the same as this video?
thebacanaut 8 months ago
It looks like your truck has two catalytic converters; the rear converter replacement would be similar to the one in the video.

I have a '87 Chevy K5 Blazer. A local mechanic said my cat con needs to be replaced. Is it a similar process? If it's as simple as this I'd rather do it myself then pay a couple hundred dollars for someone else to do it. Thank You.
TheSandBoxxx 8 months ago
The catalytic converter is should be welded into place in your Blazer, this is a different procedure than the one in the video.
canobd2 8 months ago
I have 2002 Camry 4 Cyl. It is having a CEL and the code is P0420. What could be cause? O2 sensors or Catalytic Converter. I assume I can hear some rattles..may be from Cat con I think.
Is it easy to remove Cat con this model?
Should I replace cat con or clean the current one?
Thanks in advance

It sounds like you have a bad catalytic converter. It should take about 1 hour to replace it; there is no way to clean the catalytic converter. Good Luck!!

It sounds like a clogged exhaust (a bad catalytic converter). You can remove the catalytic converter and see if you truck runs any better and to inspect the catalytic converter.

prettiimrsp2007 9 months ago
Kia Sophia catalytic converter removal;
Remove one nut and one bolt attaching fresh air duct.
Remove heat shield.
Remove the nuts that attach the converter to the exhaust manifold.
Raise car.
Remove splash shield.
Remove the nuts that attach the converter to the front pipe, remove converter, and gaskets.
Install in the reverse order, Good Luck!!

Thanks,
Bronson
BronsonKatz 10 months ago
Yes you can buy an aftermarket catalytic converter for your Volvo. Replacing the catalytic converter on your Volvo will take more work to replace than the car in the video (more things have to be removed in order to replace the converter). Good Luck!!

Hello, great video. I have a 01 honda accord. I purchased a cat for approx $160. I will attempt to install later. I had to put some pb blast on my bolts because of rust. In your video looks like your jack goes pretty high. What type of jack are you using?
Thanks - Troy

I have a Honda Accord 2002. I just had the cat converter and the two CO2 sensors replaced. I paid $1400 for parts and labor. Now my car smells like rotten eggs. Is this normal? Will the smell go away?.
Great video by the way. I wish I saw it before.
carpios 1 year ago
The rotten egg smell is from a release of built up hydrogen sufide (H2S) from the reaction of organic sulfur compounds in the gasoline with the catalytic converter. Almost all gasoline contains some amount of organic sulfur compounds. You can try changing the gas that you use it might make a difference. Good Luck!
canobd2 11 months ago
