@ytannic are you serious? there over 90 million germans and you take one psychopath as a representative? did you for example ever hear of bach, kant, goethe, nietzsche, freud, kafka, luther, einstein, beethoven, dürer, schubert, wagner, diesel, schiller, röntgen, schopenhauer? do you ever thought about where your country would be without some german inventions for example? and you get that mad over a stupid tv show? reminds me the german mentality in the 1920s: totally complex-ridden

And, do your research before you ever attempt to compare your heritage with ours, and before you claim any credit from our country for your "German Inventions"!!!

It's actually quite true and funny, no? Never understood the parade of birds-in-cage; but now i know! LOL. I think there's no need to take offence at such tongue-in-cheek (mis)representation. It's just a bit of poking-fun at our eccentricities. We also find some habits/behaviour of other cultures "weird" or "crazy", don't we? That said, the intolerance of criticism among certain people here is unbelievable - gotta lighten up. Maybe WP could start a Be Less Uptight Campaign? Jokes.
I'm from singapore and everyone needs to calm down,I find it hilarious and any publicity is good publicity. So what if it isn't true,we all have misinterpretations of other countries. We love poking fun at the somewhat odd cultures of other countries but we get so hurt and insecure when it happens to us? Take it lightly. And yes I LOVE living near to my neighbors :)
SARS was misrepresented. As for the Songbirds, its just a rich man's hobby. The Columbarium is indeed a business, but people are still willing to spend on their deceased loved ones. As for SPI, I really think they're a bit siao.

@KayokohMusic ok, if you all want to make a big fucking deal about a pseudo-documentary on a cable tv channel in a country that does not criminalize free speech.... be my guest. There have been several Germans who have tried to assure you that no German will take such sensationalist media seriously, but you can all believe whatever the heck you want. I'm a Singaporean scientist who have dealt with German media & I have never heard of Galileo until now.
@yeraye07 i'm not so sure about that. i've travelled around europe quite a lot and lived in a european country for a few months. many europeans do have strange misconceptions about singaporeans/asian people in general, and shows like this probably don't help! i'm not saying every european should be expected to know everything about every asian culture, but shows like this just add to misconceptions and stereotypes.
Okay, i can admit to both sides. Imagine, an actual tv show, that went to our small small country, and called us crazy and all that. Not only that, show only the bad/weird sides and a slight over-exaggerative tone.
take of the E-Coli virus that is rampaging your country first before you talk about Singapore's prevention methods for the SARS outbreak which by the way was EIGHT bloody years ago in 2003. I've heard of dumb f***s but this is the first time I actually saw one, on television too.
Everyone who watches this video should first read dancceawaaay's notes; it pretty much explains everything in a very logical manner. Thanks for uploading the video too.
In my opinion, the fact that the producers of this show deliberately chose to focus on rather silly issues proves that this was done for comedic value rather than as a documentary. Personally, and as a Singaporean, I found it horribly amusing.
We don't need to get offended. Most Europeans would never even heard of S'pore before, and producers have a quick eye to have a memorable TV segment by focusing on quirky unusual activities of a country. I never knew about the 5 star columnbarium before, nor heard about the SPI. And you know what, if you focus on the SPI people with toy cars yeah, i guess I can deduce that S'poreans are quite crazy. But with my limited knowledge, i also deduced that when in Rotenberg. You might get eaten.
@SnowmanPen Get a life. Nobody needs any vitriol on the Internet. It's easy for you to say what you are saying because you're not on the receiving end. Surely if you've seen the comments on Hitler Nazis Holocaust etc (thankfully I've avoided that), you would've felt just as insulted yeah? Nobody needs to have their own oddities shoved in their faces. Frankly, I'm Singaporean and practically 90% of the bullshit they are showing is stuff I'm seeing for the first time.
I weep for the tight asscracks of my countrymen. To the rest of the world, I am sorry: We really are, in large part, the butthurt people you see here on every video that deviates even a micron from our perception of the truth. But well, give the country time. It's still young.
It is remarkably surreal to see so many unknowingly ignorant comments from Singaporeans on a TV show that is knowingly ignorant (to increase their viewership). Anyone who understands German (and the production of TV shows) will not be offended by this show at all. It's not as if Mediacorp and TNP are not equally guilty of sensationalism. Even Temasek Review.
@bayenor Just by looking at your statement "to increase their viewership", aren't you just telling us that you country is aware of, and completely taken in by such gross misrepresentation of other cultures? What you deem as plain humor is quite insulting to alot of people. Not all the Chinese in the country are Buddhist. Frankly, most Chinese people I know are Christian, or freethinkers. They picked the most uncommon of practices & made them look like part of an average Singaporean's daily life.
@KayokohMusic Of course they did. No one in Germany takes Galileo that seriously except for the lower-middle income. Please don't tell me that Mediacorp doesn't have similar travel shows on Germany (or Europe). Do you think that every German wear a lederhosen or drink beer and eat sausages. It's just bloody TV. By the way, I'm Singaporean and I think that the comments posted here say a lot more about Singaporeans than it does about Germans. The posted video is an unintended Rorsach test.
@bayenor Are you stationed in Germany? Or are just another philiac. Inferring from your channel. Either way, these things are part of what makes Germany popular. It shows it in a positive light. They've just made us look like weirdos in the eyes of others. Look, unless you can draw a clear example of how Singapore has indisputably made a fool of Germany, don't come here claiming to know more about Germany than the rest of simply because you're either there, or because you like the country.
I live in Seoul at the moment, and gum patches are all over the pathway / sidewalks - filled with black patches! they have elderly folks to scrape off the gum patches from the pathway and sidewalks. it is a miserable sight to look at when I saw the elderly folks squatting at the sidewalk scraping it. they also have gum stuck all over public/private places...
Thanks for showing me that Nirvana Memorial! That extravagant is too extreme! lols! But i find this hilarious! yes, we are not allowed gum. thank you, I am quite proud of what he said, Singapore is one of the cleanest cities.
I don't get it really. cause at time 1.00, it shows the merlion hotel, which was only built recently. was the thermometer scene an act? cause we're no where near the SARS period.
It's funny because none of this are even true. Lol. Stupid producers, sent their men halfway around the world and needed to come up with some content.
Er, what is a tuk tuk doing there? You can't find such vehicles in Singapore, maybe in Thailand but not Singapore. Or are we just South East Asians in general? (rofl)
Anyway, I think it's a light hearted show meant to make fun of us. Something like the Noose, so we shouldn't take it too seriously.
Oh geez people stop making it seem as if us Singaporeans are throwing a hissy fit about nothing. We're not pissed because they didn't praise our airport and all that, we're upset because it is a gross misrepresentation of our country. It's like if I said Japanese people worship pineapples, Germans race mealworms and Kenyans eat plastic bottles for dessert. Seriously guys, entertainment can't get thicker than that.
I'm Singaporean and had the opportunity to be exposed to German culture from a young age, been to Germany several times, known Germans of many walks of life. They are mostly very nice people, interested to know more about the "exotisch Asiene" or "exotic Asians". This film is to sensationalise the "exotic Asia" idea which Europeans have. Im sure the viewers will be very disappointed if they visit Singapore with the desire for some strange adventure. Wir sind sehr normal. We are very normal.
Well, if you look for weird things you will find them. I am German, but I never watch TV here, its stupid. Although I think that this show was not really meant that serious I know what the average TV-consumer in Germany is like. He goes to work next day and is like "hey did you see that about Singapore yesterday" Problem is that manyGermans actually believe what Mass Media is putting in their heads. To be fair how about a free shot for you. Come to Germany and make a show about the weird Germans
I guess its fine to mock Singaporeans, I'm fine with it, but on national TV? And the host's expression when he sees all these really makes it that much worse. By the way why did he have to stage the temperature taking outside the mall? This goes to show that it isn't true for us, but they still want to 'show' them how weird we are haha.
hey man, they weren't mocking.. it's done in a lighthearted humorous way, nothing negative abt it. it's a variety show, meant for laughs and highlighting interesting things. thus also the host's expressions.. just like in other travel shows where the hosts make all kinds of faces when trying out good/'strange' food. having a stone-faced tv show host would be boringggg! btw, The Noose is also on national tv (ours).. and the temperature taking isn't staged lol
@dbon89 really? I was pretty sure they filmed it during the Biennale, so I wouldn't see any reason as to why we would still be taking temperatures... O.o
They live close to each other because there is no land.... Unless Singapore is as big as China, USA, Europe, or Australia then they will love to stay as further away frome ach other. The government also implemented a rule for a particular HDB flats to have a specified amount racial groups so as to prevent racial riots. I personally find this quite ridiculous since they donot have the freedom to choose where to live if the particular HDB flat is fully occupied by a race. Although im not a Singap
@lynnkk Who cares, as if you singapoerans know everything about germany, dont act like your country is so important that everyone MUST know everything about it
Asians where always the most symphatical people in my opinon, but with all these comments you just proved that there are as much ignorant dickheads as in the USA.
You tried to defend your country, but you just made it look REALLY bad, seriously, its almost funny how big this fail is.
singaporeans, chill!! this show is just highlighting the quirky stuff abt s'pore and as a sgporean, even i found it interesting and funny. they didnt set out to insult us, but to entertain their audiences. and when they say 'crazy' they don't mean it in a very bad way, but in the weird/interesting/funny kinda crazy. so just have an open mind and CHILL.
if anything, it's the producers and not ALL germans who are being 'ignorant'. if u can't tell the difference, u're probably just as ignorant.
I've lived in Singapore for decades, n I haven't seen a 'no chewing gum' sign before in my life. Sure, we don't sell chewing gum, but so what? I'll take fruit tella or mentos over chewing gum anytime.LOL.
Also, these germans never heard of the SARS or bird flu outbreak? Maybe next they will go to Japan and film a show, asking the tsunami victims, 'Hey your houses are wrecked! Y do you live like this?'
And the mocking of the religious beliefs of some Singaporeans here, srsly, need I say more?
@yuujin7788 Yeah its not like germany paid the most for tsunami victims... no of course not... -.- ,just continue with your piece of shit comments like germany never heard about the tsunami.
The average guy crying here makes your country look way worse than every tv show could.
they must be kidding! since when do we like to stay so close to each other? give us money and we'll buy a few more islands so that we can all live in bungalows!
@rexnova Wait for the day your parents die, I want to see your face then when you remember yourself saying "thank you" for dead people.
You stupid motherfuckers deserve to be mocked on tv, you all just proved to be dumb idiot fags. You just put your country into shame, everyone readin these comments thinks singapurians are all retards, what a shame
People, if u want your complaints heard by the producers, kindly direct your complaints to (website)singapur.diplo.de/Vertretung/singapur/en/Startseite or visit the local German Embassy
Reminds me of the same half-truths, distortions and total canards that appear about Singapore on websites like Temasek Review. Like the blind men feeling a different part of an elephant, seeing only one side of anything can really mislead.
Hahahah bird keeping a hobby of many Singaporeans? My god. I don't remember the last time I saw any uncle with a pet bird. I probably have to make my way to Tiong Bahru side to even catch a glimpse!
sweet to see fellow singaporeans feeling strongly defensive of the country and culture, but seriously, stop overreacting and getting all riled up. cmon, we laugh at parodies and mockeries of other nationalities too. have a sense of humour la.
@chinggybaby This is not The Noose where parodies are made of ourselves (with Singaporean actors) and our country. This video is, from what I see not a parody and it's angle was pretty disrespectful> For a "myth buster" and "educational" show, don't you think they should have done their cultural research a bit better? Additional, half the nonsense in it pertained to "Asians". Do all Asians think birdsongs bring "good luck"? I don't think so.
I would like to add to the housing bit... our Public Housing is NOT like "ghetto" style. Our public housing can cost as much as a condo in the west - so much so that people even speculate in property with public housing.
This video is disappointing. I have always had a better regard for Germans, they seemed to be the more progressive Europeans. Unfortunately, that didn't help with their Western weakness of stereotype the East.
@ambrosialmien Just shut the fuck up you uneducated son of a bitch, you think a tv show represents whole germany? Your all retards, seriously.
If there are people telling about stereotypes, you dont just go and act like idiots, to prove them all these stereotypes are true. only idiots do this. Thank you, these comments here really showed whats the average guy from singapur is like. a total dickhead
@SnowmanPen The show isn't just about stereotypes but about PLAIN FACTS they've either gotten wrong or chosen to misrepresent. Facts that even freaking wikipedia would've set them straight. They didn't even bother to do some basic research for an "educational" show to introduce a country - THAT's what's really disrespectful. Now, go back to school and fucking educate YOURSELF about what the issue is here before you go round calling Singaporeans whiners.
To all those who comment about people not knowing the language, the fact that they only targeted Buddhist customs and traditional Chinese superstitions speaks VOLUMES. There are many other religions and racial groups in our country. Yet they obviously think we are a bunch of ching chong ling long ting tongs because of skin color. While not all Germans will probably think the same way, the fact that this kind of a program is so popular is just a reflection of their culture and society. Disgusted.
Im an " ang moh" ,which by the way is incredibly racist plus i do not have red hair. Anyway i live in singapore and this so called temperature check was way back during the SARS period of 2003 i think.
And POSSESSION of chewing gum isn't illegal, SELLING it is cause people used to stick it on train doors. God, some people are so ignorant.
Wow. Wonderful. Germans that base their impression of Singapore just by going to a few buildings and following a couple of shows. They should probably stay in Singapore for at least a month before they make their conclusion of Singapore.
OH my I've lived in Singapore almost all my life and I've never once had my temperature checked, except at the airport. I must be visiting the wrong building then.
Having lived in Singapore for so many years ... all I can say is HAHAHAHA!!! This show is funny!! ... I don't understand why Singaporeans should be angry ... c'mon, this is comedy/feature show ... it's not a documentary!
the show is most probably made this way to get more viewership. who would want to see boring stuff about other countries where u can read them online? and your post might get deleted if u post offensive stuff. they do not want others to know the truth.
this show is inaccurate on so many levels. Did they even research about singapore? gosh even googling it will give u a much more accurate potrayal of singapore.
For a race of people who are once one of the most highly cultured country in Europe. The creation of such a video really doesn't helps much in sustaining that reputation.
@rainnylovealien17 That is exactly what i am saying no one is perfect if this is part of your country embrace, no one is perfect so it is best not to even try. But we probably will see another report in the next few days that says Singapore is number 1 in something so that Singaporeans can beat their chest. Why not just be and who cares about the rest?
@helloimna except when even your Prime Minister can point out all the flaws in the other countries systems from politics to schools to health providers. Yes Humble to a fault. The guy is putting on a show to make people watch so he has to be that way. I've seen the same done to the US and UK by shows here in Singapore.
@Randomntn I would live with it if it were truly "who we are" and we don't think we're "so perfect". I am not trying to cover up for my country or sugar coat our supposed "weirdness". I have lived here all my life and I am telling you, Singapore is far from what is portrayed here. We're about as weird as a doorknob on a door. Bugger off.
@nattanable Yes I agree but I have seen some pretty weird doorknobs, Why get offended by this show it does not make you what it says but getting upset and using racist remarks as some of the comment have used show exactly how most Singaporeans can be like. Just look at the term Ang mo, It can be quite harmless or quite racist but would U like it if a whole country commonly use a term that could go either way depending upon their mood? That is not nice
Of course adults can all just laugh it off as a joke.
But what if kids and teens watch this "documentary" and actually believe all that crap? The speaker was casting a negative light on us, which is retarded because they should give a neutral point of view and let people just on their own.
The noob film maker should just stay in Germany and make a living by trolling on forums.
Yes, all Germans are stupid and ingorant because of a satirical but also badly researched report on Singaporeans. The way some people overreact and judge a huge group by the actions of a few is ridiculous.
Pls don't get so upset. Part of the problem here is the translation in the subtitles. The translation of "das ist total verrückt" to "crazy" is plainly wrong. it is the literal meaning but Germans use it to express that something is strange, different, and interesting in a positive sense. If Germans wanted to be rude they'd say "bekloppt". Also "They are crazy, them Romans" is a reference to a French cartoon (Asterix and Obelix) loved all across Europe so this sentence is used here as a joke.
@danceawaaay Yes who needs trained translators if we can interpret people just by their tone of voice ... Japanese have a very different tone of voice from Russians as from Germans. And when my boyfriend speaks Chinese, I wouldn't dare saying his tone of voice tells me everything. I did not expect a comment like this from you.
@sweetestkind wow you're going to group ALL ang moh's because of one stupid report that you see where you can't even understand the fucking language. how stupid are YOU.
Eh... To those raging about how "stupid" we look like in the video, you're not doing Singaporeans a favour by insulting Germans / Germany. The feature is inaccurate, and does tend to make us look... strange, yes, but the comments you're lobbing at them are in poor taste and offensive.
Just calm down and point out, "This video is inaccurate, borderline inflammatory and just plain silly at times." Calm down folks - you're showing a really ugly side of yourselves.
WTF?! The birds thing is utter bullshit. I'm a Singaporean and I'm Catholic. I'm not going to splurge $200k to cremate 24 people and I sure as hell find birds annoying. Way to go Germany for showing us GLOBALISED citizens what retarded morons you all are.
I'm Singaporean and I've never been screened for a fever before entering a building. It looks fake, see how the woman is dressed in home clothes instead of a security uniform. Crazy Germans are trying to sensationalize.
@danceawaaay@kiatiolia woah now everybody's all worked up about what I said? Tell you what, why don't you guys leave us the fuck alone, and we'll do the same to you. If you can't learn to respect our socio-cultural differences, I don't see why we should either. Call us crazy buddhists and see the imaginative stereotypes I have for you. Fuck off.
The two women that appear after this guy's "conclusion" seem to be be strolling into the mall. Where's their temperature check? This is so insulting! Why are the Singaporeans even cooperating in this "real life situation"?
there's no need to feel bad about this video at all, it is quite entertaining, doesn't give a really bad view of Singapore too?

TheSpeech 8 months ago
It is remarkably surreal to see so many unknowingly ignorant comments from Singaporeans on a TV show that is knowingly ignorant (to increase their viewership). Anyone who understands German (and the production of TV shows) will not be offended by this show at all. It's not as if Mediacorp and TNP are not equally guilty of sensationalism. Even Temasek Review.
bayenor 8 months ago
@bayenor Just by looking at your statement "to increase their viewership", aren't you just telling us that you country is aware of, and completely taken in by such gross misrepresentation of other cultures? What you deem as plain humor is quite insulting to alot of people. Not all the Chinese in the country are Buddhist. Frankly, most Chinese people I know are Christian, or freethinkers. They picked the most uncommon of practices & made them look like part of an average Singaporean's daily life.
KayokohMusic 8 months ago
@KayokohMusic Of course they did. No one in Germany takes Galileo that seriously except for the lower-middle income. Please don't tell me that Mediacorp doesn't have similar travel shows on Germany (or Europe). Do you think that every German wear a lederhosen or drink beer and eat sausages. It's just bloody TV. By the way, I'm Singaporean and I think that the comments posted here say a lot more about Singaporeans than it does about Germans. The posted video is an unintended Rorsach test.
bayenor 8 months ago

Er, what is a tuk tuk doing there? You can't find such vehicles in Singapore, maybe in Thailand but not Singapore. Or are we just South East Asians in general? (rofl)
Anyway, I think it's a light hearted show meant to make fun of us. Something like the Noose, so we shouldn't take it too seriously.
sarefin 8 months ago

We are very normal.
mingzy 8 months ago 19
Well, if you look for weird things you will find them. I am German, but I never watch TV here, its stupid. Although I think that this show was not really meant that serious I know what the average TV-consumer in Germany is like. He goes to work next day and is like "hey did you see that about Singapore yesterday" Problem is that manyGermans actually believe what Mass Media is putting in their heads. To be fair how about a free shot for you. Come to Germany and make a show about the weird Germans
Bjorno88 8 months ago 3
I guess its fine to mock Singaporeans, I'm fine with it, but on national TV? And the host's expression when he sees all these really makes it that much worse. By the way why did he have to stage the temperature taking outside the mall? This goes to show that it isn't true for us, but they still want to 'show' them how weird we are haha.
whorepresentsyou1123 8 months ago
@whorepresentsyou1123
hey man, they weren't mocking.. it's done in a lighthearted humorous way, nothing negative abt it. it's a variety show, meant for laughs and highlighting interesting things. thus also the host's expressions.. just like in other travel shows where the hosts make all kinds of faces when trying out good/'strange' food. having a stone-faced tv show host would be boringggg! btw, The Noose is also on national tv (ours).. and the temperature taking isn't staged lol

@dbon89 really? I was pretty sure they filmed it during the Biennale, so I wouldn't see any reason as to why we would still be taking temperatures... O.o

The government also implemented a rule for a particular HDB flats to have a specified amount racial groups so as to prevent racial riots. I personally find this quite ridiculous since they donot have the freedom to choose where to live if the particular HDB flat is fully occupied by a race. Although im not a Singap

singaporeans, chill!! this show is just highlighting the quirky stuff abt s'pore and as a sgporean, even i found it interesting and funny. they didnt set out to insult us, but to entertain their audiences. and when they say 'crazy' they don't mean it in a very bad way, but in the weird/interesting/funny kinda crazy. so just have an open mind and CHILL.

sweet to see fellow singaporeans feeling strongly defensive of the country and culture, but seriously, stop overreacting and getting all riled up. cmon, we laugh at parodies and mockeries of other nationalities too. have a sense of humour la.
chinggybaby 8 months ago
@chinggybaby This is not The Noose where parodies are made of ourselves (with Singaporean actors) and our country. This video is, from what I see not a parody and it's angle was pretty disrespectful> For a "myth buster" and "educational" show, don't you think they should have done their cultural research a bit better? Additional, half the nonsense in it pertained to "Asians". Do all Asians think birdsongs bring "good luck"? I don't think so.
ambrosialmien 8 months ago
I would like to add to the housing bit... our Public Housing is NOT like "ghetto" style. Our public housing can cost as much as a condo in the west - so much so that people even speculate in property with public housing.
This video is disappointing. I have always had a better regard for Germans, they seemed to be the more progressive Europeans. Unfortunately, that didn't help with their Western weakness of stereotype the East.
ambrosialmien 8 months ago
@ambrosialmien Just shut the fuck up you uneducated son of a bitch, you think a tv show represents whole germany? Your all retards, seriously.
If there are people telling about stereotypes, you dont just go and act like idiots, to prove them all these stereotypes are true. only idiots do this. Thank you, these comments here really showed whats the average guy from singapur is like. a total dickhead
SnowmanPen 8 months ago
@SnowmanPen The show isn't just about stereotypes but about PLAIN FACTS they've either gotten wrong or chosen to misrepresent. Facts that even freaking wikipedia would've set them straight. They didn't even bother to do some basic research for an "educational" show to introduce a country - THAT's what's really disrespectful. Now, go back to school and fucking educate YOURSELF about what the issue is here before you go round calling Singaporeans whiners.
ambrosialmien 8 months ago
@ambrosialmien its not about plain facts, its just a report, i dont see anything that says "THIS IS REAL, 100% scientifically proven"
And singaporeans making themself looking stupid are more real than some tv show where you cant even see the producers
SnowmanPen 8 months ago
To all those who comment about people not knowing the language, the fact that they only targeted Buddhist customs and traditional Chinese superstitions speaks VOLUMES. There are many other religions and racial groups in our country. Yet they obviously think we are a bunch of ching chong ling long ting tongs because of skin color. While not all Germans will probably think the same way, the fact that this kind of a program is so popular is just a reflection of their culture and society. Disgusted.

MrHorse16 8 months ago
Pls don't get so upset. Part of the problem here is the translation in the subtitles. The translation of "das ist total verrückt" to "crazy" is plainly wrong. it is the literal meaning but Germans use it to express that something is strange, different, and interesting in a positive sense. If Germans wanted to be rude they'd say "bekloppt". Also "They are crazy, them Romans" is a reference to a French cartoon (Asterix and Obelix) loved all across Europe so this sentence is used here as a joke.
