I've heard SD live several times and I'd only pay to hear them again if Wayne Krantz were playing guitar. He is the real deal. I think some of you rocknroll boys have trouble understanding Jazz sensibility. He's easily the most talented and most interesting guitarist that ever played with SD.
The augmented backing vocals almost sink this song. I don't mind reworking a whole song, but playing the song note for note except for a few bars here and there is irritating.
Really folks, liking or disliking something and then ripping the virtual throat out of anyone who dissagrees with you is a little bit of an overreaction. The online community (hah, community...) can really be pointlessly vicious. You can always just watch and enjoy/change the page if you so choose.

Oh.
I'm just happy enough to have live Dan to see/hear, good or bad. The recordings can get monotonous. Somewhat.
I agree, the solo doesn't quite cut it for me though I am not sure that's down to me being a consumer of pop music crap and not being able to understand dynamics. ;) Anyway, the solo in the original has a smooth, slithery, mysterious feeling which is lost somewhere in this performance. Good playing as a standalone performance.
What I don't like about the original solo is the fact that he never played over the chord transition, which is a bit boring (though I still liked it.) The thing is, Krantz is amazing, but his style doesn't quite suit Steely Dan live (though he did play on Gaucho to note).
these guys wrote some great songs so trying to determined the composition is worthless and Fagan and Becker wrote some good songs but you have to read books to understand exactly what they are speaking of.
LOVE Wayne Krantz. Saw him three times with DF on his solo tour in 2006 and he just brings something different and great to the show every night. I see there are lots of people here who don't think much of his playing. I think you're missing something.
Some of Steely Dan's music is so scary good its hard to believe it was composed by mortals. Fagen and Becker have not been able to make music nearly as good on their own, and its too bad.
A good version, the guitar solo is alittle loose. Who was that guy? Man I wished they played this at Foxwoods. They only played one set but the new room sounds wonderful, it is at the MGM Grand.
That's what I was thinking (re-guitar solo).. It seemed like he was doing a guitar version of Mariah Carey - reaching and reaching but not quite hitting it. I think he was trying too hard. No idea who it was.
Yeah he toured with them for a while then they layed him off. can't remember his name. He does an evil solo on 'my old school' but he is way too preoccupied with shreading and showing off.
Walter Becker owns him. in fact he owns most. he is amazingly under rated. his solo on 'i got the news' massive.
Actually Wayne Krantz isn't as much of a show off as you think. He doesn't do much of the shredding style as much now. He still plays hella fast, if you listen to one of his albums, 2 Drink Minimum in particular, you'd see how wrong you are. He really takes pride in deep song structure and while on the album you get his shred style even though he is a jazz musician, you'll here things that at times are more complex then Steely Dan
I don't need YOU to tell me about singularly LOUD music devoid of dynamic range, BORING 4/4 time or anything else beyond 1-4-5 progressions. I am a musician, you are a consumer of simplistic Pop music such as this groups crap.
unforunately this isnt just in 1-4-5... i do wonder if your just trolling, and i think your missing the point, just because some music is 'simple'( i would hardly consider wayne krantz to be simplistic or pop for that matter) doesnt make it any less valid than any other form of music. i am a musician as well and i whole heartly disagree with your opinion. The guys who make this music are musicians as well. I find your attempts to put yourself above others to be contrary to the spirit of music
Musicians are all musical critics, never met one who isn't! Especially Classically trained ones. Please do examine your own motives. I'd say your overly influenced by this stuff as you were probably at "that age" when it came out so it has greater meaning for you than it honestly deserves. Come on, we all have this bit of vulnerability.
no i am not of that age when it came out, nor am i their biggest fan, i merely appreciate their music for what it is, jazz inspired pop/funk from the 70s. the fact that they hired a guitarist that i enjoy listening to for this gig helps. beethoven was surely considered 'pop' in his day. the true test of music is if it stands the test of time. i responded to you because of your unjustified total dismissal of the music played here. i thought you were a troll but am sure you are a reasonable person
hopefully you can acknowledge that there are people out there who enjoy this music who arent necssarily tonedeaf or musically illiterate, on the contrary there may even be capable musicians who find inspiration in this. a good deal of thought is put into many genres of music, not just what is considered 'classical' today. i do agree that there is music out there that is utterly worthless both in content and emotion, made purely for commercial purposes, i just dont agree that this is one of them!
@paullubliner Are you kidding? Steely Dan is ageless. I listen mostly to jazz/fusion and Frank Zappa, but recently came across the music of Steely Dan, and consequently they are now one of my favorites. Some of the best music out there, of the rock, and jazz/funk/fusion genres. I am reluctant to call them pop music, because although they had a number of popular songs, their music does not fit any particular form, and has a very novel sound unlike anything prior to, or after them.
@paullubliner you are a fucking joke. these guys got an honorary doctor of music from Berklee, do you know what that means? that this group are utterly brilliant musicians. boring 4/4 time........youve got to be kidding. its extremely hard to get any other time signature to sound good. haha im not sure what kind of fucked up musician you are to call steely dan consumer pop, im really not. not every song has to be incredibly musically complicated or else it's shit you idiot.
@Jourdydogyella You don't know a thing about me but you call me that. Makes you look very, very bad. Sonny boy, I'd love to see you TRY TO jam with John McLaughlin in 9/4 time. I'd like to see you attempt to sight read Music, or write music. Try listening to and follow along with Artur Honneger's Pacific 2-3-1. You are so inept, I will leave it there.
@paullubliner not everything has to be classical music or sound like honneger's song. i'd think out of every artist we hear today, that someone with your apparently huge knowledge of music would appreciate the artistry of steely dan. the chords, lyrical genius, drum beats etc. nothing many musicians can replicate. musicians aren't inept because they dont jam in 9/4 time.
@paullubliner im a singer/guitarist which of course means im not going to write a hugely complicated musical piece which i have to sing over. my genre doesnt require me to and thats something you need to get your head around. i too get extremely angry over the shit we have now with four chords and a synth track creating a song. thats why although i maintain a pop-rock style i add musicality to it. you shouldn't be condemning music like that because its not in superlocrian in 13/5.
@paullubliner take artists like the beegees and michael jackson. comparible to mclaughlin not because of their musicality but their ability to create beautiful songs with great melodies and tone. your comment is just like saying don bradman was a shit cricketer because his technique was lacking. artists shouldnt be required to know the music world in and out to be recognized. i've been to Berklee where the metal players have great skill levels, but their music is disgusting.
Yeah, I think a lot of the comments up here are way to judgemental... 20 years after they were really cutting and STILL sounding good. I have plenty of boots from all eras of this band, and this ain't mediocre... its very smooth. The guitar work is very nifty and delicate and its pretty much a laid back affair... which will do me fine for a certain mood...
then you either have very bad ears or a bad sound system. The bass line is there, and it's tight. But I thought it was Anthony Jackson that played the bass, not tom Barney... hmmm
Damn great solo again bij Wayne ;)!! Is speed and technique is awesome...somtimes is sounds a bit weird but its never wrong but that typical jazz for ya!
