I know direct drive is easy to do, but why why why dont they put a gearbox on electric bikes??? would it not have the same benefit of increased speed AND range as a gas engine?
@paradoxb3 There is no need because of the torque characteristics they can just gear them low. Obviously if a car tried to take off in top gear it would stall, but an electric motor can pull from very low rpm. also because it does not need to idle, no clutch would be required, benefits from lighter weight and simplicity as well. Where petrol motors rpm varies because of air/fuel ratio, fuel delivery, valve lift, etc electric is basically increase current = increase speed.
@skyhacker6 Ive only ever owned motorcycles, never a car. I love the sound of their engines. If they ever make an electric that just plain works, it will easily beat a gasoline powered bike any day, as they can give 100% torque at 0rpm. That little humming noise could be the new sound you relate to action, if they can get it to work.
@skyhacker6 Sound is wasted energy, if your bike is sounding like a 200 watt stereo that's 200 watts which by definition are not being used at the wheels, and that energy is coming from fuel you have bought. Not smart. A totally efficient machine would turn stored energy into movement without generating (not just not producing) any sound or heat.
@EvendimataE because the looks of a bike is awesome, you are not only riding over 2 stupid wheels you are also riding over a beautifull horse, makes sence to you?
rich man toys? maybe. but they are better for the planet and if no one plays them we are pretty fucked and tomorow children will have a fucked up planet because of us
The only one I saw they had a couple years back looked like a puch moped. The racebike was completely different. I guess it was the "Enertia"but it might have had skinnier wheels. Once it was repaired for the 3rd time, I rode it and within 5 minutes the power meter read 30%, after charging overnight. I guess if You lived where it was completely flat it might be ok. I can think of better use for 12 grand though, lots better. This junk is rich mans toys.
@ManMeatMusket We had a brammo at out shop as a demo that they sent customers to test ride. They were trying to sell them through best buy stores. It was a pile of junk, more an electric moped then anything else, and it was broken more than working. To fix it, the guy had to drive down from Oregon, if You paid $12K for one, would You accept that?In nearly 30 years around electric vehicles,I have yet to see a practical one for the general public.

this technology is incredible. Im glad that they are coming up with this stuff. I will sure as heck not buy now, but give it a few years when the bugs are out, sure
@510gambit a) Could you name that 210 km/h scooter? b) I've seen engines explode under the rider but never seen a battery pack explode c) you must have a scary cool vacuum cleaner as these bikes sound like the bikes from the first version of 'tron. d) you're thinking of petrol bikes that you need to pull apart at the end of every season. These electrics need a brush change every 100 000 km and that's the only "pull apart" task.
@lucky51762 I think so: Where I live, lots of Taxis are Prius now, and taxi drivers comment how difficult it’s to drive in high populated areas.
Also a friend of mine had an electric scooter (big ones) during a weekend, and he said it was crazy, not because of other cars, but because of the people, they just jumped into the street. It is like riding a giant bicycle…
It's 65hp. 7.5 kwh battery. Top speed of 130mph (210km/h). Same light weight as a GSXR 600 'wet' at 380lbs (170kg). 130mile (210km) range, which will cost about 75 cents in electricity.
@kbyecruzer Well this is electric. You plug it in to charge it for probably 8 hours for 25 mins of ride time so to answer your question gas is alot more efficient. I can ride my bike all day and it takes me less then 5 mins to "recharge"
@tansit2344 Range is about 100 miles, it's 30 kg *lighter* than the petrol bike it's based on. You're right that combustion does some things that electric can't, but are those things that it does, something that most people do? Generally not. Most people's trips are much less than 100 miles and most people don't spend much time riding faster than 210 km/h.
@coalandnuclear yes it is only good for a commuter bike. The motor only weighs 2.5 Kg and is equivalent to a 110 cc engine but it has a lot more lower rpm torque.
Tesla an electric car beating most engine cars off the line.
My only real problem with this, is that one of my favorite things about bikes is the sound. I'm a big Ducati fan, and this things just seems a bit bland. Good to see the technology being used more now though.
@ArtisticwithaK it is a real motor :P just not a petrol one...
itll never sound like a petrol engine, that's something special to internal combustion but just imagine when we start tweaking with the battery, adding different cooling methods, messing about with the drivetrain and so on
There may be a symphony hiding underneath this technology
