yes thats why if you really want a protection dog the best thing to do is go to a training facility and buy a family protection dog fully grown and fully trained. You can be put on a schedule for your new dog and tought just what it takes to keep these awesome dogs. And people forget the need to come in for maintaince a lot. It costs a lot to get one properly but it will vost a lot for an idiot who desides to train for one themselves.

if anyone seeing this is a dog trainer, or specifically a security dog trainer, is it true or false pit bulls or pit 'bully' breeds are rarely used as police dogs because of the proported instability of the breed? please comment if you have the appropriate knowledge . thanks

Not a trainer or anything specialist but (Myself wanting to join the K9 Unit) My Criminal Justice classes said they less used because they tend to be at risk of causing more damage to suspects than other dogs, though every dog may run into the same problem.

German Shepherds have been bred specifically for this type of work for a century, and police are really big on tradition and having a consistent look which may also have something to do with it. Also keep in mind that often working or show pit bulls are referred to by other terms, like Staffordshire Terrier.

when dogs are put into good use like this, our society benefits. this is the positive side. unfortunately there are too many people who want them as "toys' and cannot properly take care of them, they get abandoned and end up euthanized in a pound. this is the reality of the negative side of what we have done to the majestic wolf: dogs that end up dead by the millions annually under euthanasia.

You hit the nail on the head. When dogs have a PURPOSE, a good job to do, like K9 dogs do, both humans AND dogs benefit. For thousands of years dogs were bred and used for work, to help humans, and dogs were better for it. Now in these modern times we have all these dogs with no work to do; I think that is why so many dogs have behavior and other problems. Anyway, great comment.
