  • its not ian singing here its rod fuck me ,, get real

  • this pic, this band, this day, this year.

    all i can say is:

    drive carefully!

  • oh wow!

  • A Heavy Pop song , It sounds good / Not flooded out with That church Keyboard sound.

  • amazing.....!!! I think the original vocalist sing it before.... but in 1:30 , oooh yes... It's Gillan...

  • Comment removed

  • "Rare case of Ian Gillan handling a Mark 1 song?!?!" More like he ate it!! every mark I song that Gillan sang is better than the original. After him singing it i never listen to mark I original.

  • 1:30!!!!!!!!

  • Ian really gave this song a whole new level !! :-)

    peace

  • VERRY GOOD

  • wow, amazing version

  • wow, amazibg version

  • The guy most to the left at the picture at 1:14 , is that glover or simper?

if it is simper this pic is quite special!!!

  • @SUPERMANfromMETROPOL Its Glover, around the time of the Concerto.

  • @Dimagg1973 thanx!, fantastic version of fantastic song, fantastic picture of the faboulos 5, paice king of flowerpover, and glover not even recognized by me, but i can see it clearly now, what a heavy heavy group sitting on these stairs in 1969

  • @SUPERMANfromMETROPOL

Use your brain superman..Simper wasn't in purple when Gillan was, Gillan is in the picture so it has to be Glover.

Then again any real Purple fan would know Glover without having to ask.

  • @theyorkshirewhites so at least you would agree that it would have been a rather special pic, if it had been gillan and simper, at the samer pic !? but u r right, it was too bad i could not recognize glover, because it clearly is glover. gillan and simper are freinds, by the way. both pretty wonderfull persons.

  • @SUPERMANfromMETROPOL

It would have been special, but not very likely.

  • @SUPERMANfromMETROPOL I can see why you ask, that doesn't look like Glover but it is sadly. Loved Nicked Simper

  • @exc123 I agree, but also love Glover. everything about mark 1 is tip top.

i would not have changed mark 1, but look what happened when they did.

  • @SUPERMANfromMETROPOL Good Point

  • @exc123 Thanx!

  • Life long Gillan fan. Gillan is the MAN!!!

  • I'd like to hear David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes cover this track! Wish Mk.3 had played a couple of Mk.1 numbers.

  • This is so GREAT>>>>>>>>>EXCELLENT!!!!!! \m/

  • that is not deep purple and there is no gillan on it.

  • from which lp or cd is taken? maybe a bonus track? please let me know, thanks!

  • Ian Gillan greater screamer. Rod Evans greater singer. That is the main difference. God bless we had a Mrk1 Purple to enjoy.

  • @oberfour

I agree that Mark 1 was magical,.

As to who was better singer, I think there are many songs that show Ian to be awesome singer and not just a screamer. Actually even when some think he screams in CIT he actually sings there and not screams.

listen to CIT original in Rock.

Rod did good job in the Mark 1 era

  • @Dimagg1973 - let's not get caught up in the better than/worse than, they are both brilliant in their own ways. I so wish that Rod would resurface and let his fans show him the love he has earned. This business of the 80s bogus Deep Purple is long ago now, let it stay dead and buried. If Rod resurfaced we could perhaps get a tour of the cream of Deep Purple from all marks, one that perhaps even Ritchie B would embrace and participate in. Anyway, raise a glass to both Rod and to Ian!!

  • @EmeraldGemstar09 Couldn't agree more,

great reply, yes a tour of all the members would have been something.

Like it or not we are running of time, the lads are not getting younger.

Maybe Tommy brother Johnny Bolin can be in his stead for couple of good songs.

  • @Dimagg1973 - thanks for noticing and for caring. My favourite Mark One album is the third one, though I do love their version of Help! from an earlier one. As well as the album version of Bird Has Flown, I love Lalena on that album too.

  • @EmeraldGemstar09

Rod cannot sing DP songs now, after the bogus tour he signed an arrangement to say he would not.

  • @theyorkshirewhites That was sad part. I think changes in the agreement can be done if he stepped forward.

After all today only the drummer Ian Pace is original from the Mark 1 era.

  • @oberfour I agree...this version is missing the deep moody vocal tone Evans brought to it, don't get me wrong -I like Ian Gillian quite a bit however Rod Evans vocals had a certain charm and tone that fit the mk 1 material far better the Gillians voice...although I'm thinking Ian Gillians voice might work on Emeretta

  • @oberfour

I hope you're not suggesting that all ian gillan did was scream..if you are you need to open your ears.

  • This would have been hard for Gillian to sing because he sings higher than Evans.

l mean the song was written around Evans vocals style .

l didn't know Gillian could sing that low .

Bit like asking Evans to sing Child in time i suppose.

  • rod evans never screamed like that......i think this was first put out on an E.P. with grabsplatter and another track (smoke....?) in '77 or '80......another record you lend to somebody and dont get back.......eh, Phil?

  • Ian Gillan rocks!!!!

  • @Banner1979

    You are correct.

This was the EP and it also fitured Freedom an aoutake from Fireball.

I never could figure why it wasn't included as its a great song.

  • @Dimagg1973 Freedom was cool. You can get this version of Bird Has Flown in a Deep Purple box set that has lots of rarities from 1968-76.

  • You are rigth!!!!...thanks man!!

  • thats gillan singing for definite

  • This is not Ian Gillan its Rod Evans!!!

  • @eddyhunter69

    You are wrong.

This is Ian Gillan, Rod with all the respect didn't have this range of voce and the melodic screaming (singing so high) As Ian Gillan could.

Did you even listen to this version of the song? ANd did you listen to the version with Rod which I love very match.

  • True, it's Gillian !

  • @Lucian078

    It's NOT GILLIAN.....It's GILLAN.

    FOOL !!

  • @eddyhunter69

Definitely Gillan...Evans could never scream like that.

  • @eddyhunter69 its clearly gillan...

  • This is cool! Thank you for posting this

  • This is Ian Gillian singing. Rod Evans had a smoother voice with out the scream.

  • Thanks for posting this. I have this but it's being sung by Rod Evens. This is really a rarity. Thanks Clive.

  • 3 or 4 numbers *

  • What a great idea..get all past Purple members to do a concert..say 3 or numbers from each line-up..then "Smoke"..as an encore with the vocalists and guitarists each taking a turn.

Leave all animosity and ego's at home !

  • This is definite proof of the metamorphosis to the In Rock sound. The rest is history. Thanks.

  • Yes, great way of putting it. That pivotal turn of the decade, when rock went from hard to harder.

  • Wow, when i saw the name of this video I thought it would be a crappy bootleg, but OMG this is amazing. I knew it would be cool 'cause Gillan would be singing MK1 stuff, but the quality is perfect. Is it a studio recording?

  • BBC Deep Purple Mark 2 recorded this track for the BBC on 11 August 1969 and it was released as a track on New Live and Rare vol 3 in 1980. It remained (officially) unreleased on CD until the 6 CD set in 2002.

Unofficially circulated on BBC Stew Bootleg.

  • I really want this on CD but the box set is so expensive when you find it. Wish they'd bring out a single or double CD of rarities that includes this. I've got the Mark One version but I'd just like this for completion's sake.

  • @EmeraldGemstar09

In 1982 I think there was a CD released called rare, live etc

It has this song on it and also couple of other out takes like Freedom.

  • Comment removed

  • This song was one of my faves to play live

  • When Ian Gillan screams at 1:30 something happens inside my brain...

  • Every one in this band called Deep Purple is a star.

    A band of Stars

  • BEST ROCK VOCALIST OF ALL TIME

  • I agree with you man!!!!!!!

  • and Freddie Mercury

  • DOESNT GET ANY BETTER

  • Thats debatable. I liked Rods voice and this is a classic of Mark 1.

But Ian's range and power are far greater and different.

Hey there are people who liked Coverdale better , this is individual.

I treasure Mark 1 and Rods, Nick's contribution to the band, don't get me wrong.

But Ian and Roger was a complete revolution and as Jon Lord tell god bless them what made Deep Purple most famous and classic Mark 2.

  • Good but he just ain't Rod. Rod had the richer better voice !!

  • I love this voice!!! Thanks for all Ian!!

  • The version with rod evans will always be the definitive version of this song, but this version is fantastic! they should've released this. kinda strange, though, its like a cover version, but by the same band

  • I posted the BBC Stew boot leg version.

But there is a better quality and cleaner recording available on Deep Purple - Listen, Learn, Read On cd 2

    3. Ricochet (BBC Session)

    4. The Bird Has Flown (BBC Session)

    9. Speed King (BBC Session)

    11. Hard Loving Man (BBC Session)

    12. Bloodsucker (BBC Session)

    13. Living Wreck (BBC Session)

  • I have the Live In Montreux 1969 Live album, and Gillan does a damn good job on 'Kentucky Woman' there, which they do as an encore. Apart from that one, they also do 'Mandrake Root', 'Wring That Neck' and of course 'Hush' from the MK.I era. Heard rumours of that they rehearsed 'River Deep, Mountain High' with Gillan, but never knew they ever did this. Thanks for sharing!

  • Is this officially released, can I find this bootleg, cd or whatever somewere? Gillan does this well!

  • Its funny that Mark 1 or Mark 3 only would need to borrow

    Ian Pice from current mark.

  • Stranger still that this song is just over 40 years old but still breathes life and contemporary excitement in it..... If I had a band I would record it.....

  • A show with all the members of Deep Purple would be a super show. Imagine Satriani, Blackmore and Steve Morse on stage with Nick, Roge and Glenn. ( Maybe Boiln's brother will honor Tommy?)

I would love to hear Burn or Mistreated with David, Glen, Blackmore, Lord and Pice again, that would be a treat man.

Or Chasing shadows with Nick and Rod with the rest of Mark 1.

    God bless them

  • This thought has crossed my mind as well. Every lineup performing a handful of songs each. Would be a huge success. Too bad Tommy Bolin and probably Rod Evans would never do such thing.

  • Comment removed

  • Dimagg1973, Yeah, I've always loved Chasing Shadows. Pity Purple never performed it live with Rod or Ian Gillan on vocals.

  • My first Deep Purple song that I loved was Lalena mark 1.

The third deep purple mark 1 album was and still is a respected and wonderful guest in my car and home stereo.

Unlike the previous 2 albums this one is heavier and I love all songs on it.

    Masterpiece

I agree that original Mark 1 version is awesome, And the ending of this song with building tension and drums getting fuller and louder.

  • There's no denying that this version is ballsy and has guts, but I prefer the slower, more thoughtful version with the Rod Evans vocals and the extended keyboards from Jon Lord.

I wish Rod Evans was still around today, I'd love to see a Purple show with all lineups having a set each. Good enough for Yes to do just that, good enough for Purple. But it'll probably never happen, can't see Ritchie Blackmore giving up the folk trail for DP again, can you?

  • You are probably right! I doubt Ritchie would do it. Rod Evans wherever he is, would never do it. I think Nick Simper would. I bet Glenn Hughes and JLT would do it as well. I also think Lord would do it, if it was only for a couple of shows. Satriani never did anything with the band (studio). He did excellent Live renditions of 'Ramshackle Man' and 'Knocking At Your Back Door' though. Sadly Tommy Bolin wouldn't be there either.

  • Wow, I was not convinced it was Gillan singing until I heard his signature scream mid-song. Great music and pics. Thanks for the post!

  • It WAS on the New Live and Rare volume 3 single (along with Grabsplatter, and a version of SOTW from the '72 BBC In Concert show).

  • This is fucking ( sorry ) brilliant..excellent post..thankyou for this amazing piece of musical history.

Should have been on one of the New Live And Rare issues.

  • Ian has amazing range.
