David Rudder is a great song writer but the year 1986 his performance was nothing compared to Gypsy. Gypsy deserved it that year. It was actually a little more than a tad bit uproar....
Not sure where you got your information Getonbad, but the reason we say King David Rudder is because he was and still is the only person to win calypso monarch, road march and young king monarch in the same year (1986). It has nothing to do with Sparrow who continues to be the supreme calypso king of the world. One Love.
The issue of David Rudder takes away from the point that Gypsy's performance was the best. Just because he ripped the judges which we know at times the voting has been questionable. The all round performance was d best at Carnival. As for David Rudder I will not take away from his talent or awards. But I have seen first hand (NJPAC) promo material espousing him as the King of Calypso. That is Sparrow's title and Rudder doesn't need to go there. His talent speaks for itself.

David Rudder stole the title King of Calypso which rightfully belows to The Mighty Sparrow. I love King David and while he is a great song writer and singer, he can't dance with Gypsy. He can't ad lib like Gypsy and he certainly could never match Gypsy's wardrobe. Not to take away from Rudder or Black Stalin. They are both great calypsonians. Let's argue with the outside world that we need MORE calypso.
Well said! I totally agree with you my friend. Gypsy did lose the Calypso Crown and Road March to David Rudder's Bahia Girl and The Hammer. In 1987, Gypsy was trying to come up with a better strategy to outdo David Rudder or any other calypsonian to get his share. Gypsy is a good guy. I spoke to Gypsy a few times before.
This kaiso was in response to his losing the Kaiso crown the year before when he came second to David Rudder (who sang Bahia Ghyul). Although his comps were really good, Rudder's hit was just the hottest thing that year and he lost. I don't blame him...LOLOL

Being a HUGE David Rudder fan I find it hard to admit that this is an absolutely amazing song, but it really is. And quite the performance too.
