The Phantom in this one was so mellow and human; I could really connect with him. Gerard Butler was the more kickass hero of my dreams though but less likely to really exist.
@jenniijennjenn I completly agree. This one is so loving, and the phantom is sweet and unloed. but the 2004 version is just beast with the actors/actresses, the make up, the plot, and the speciale effects!!
@crazypatronila this is like a two part movie/ mini series.....it's on YouTube , just search phantom of the opera 1/21 and the right video should pop up.....I love the musical, I've known it since I was three, I love the movie, I've read the book several times and I honestly adore the series, it opens things about Erik that I've never seen before.....LOVE PHANTOM!!!
They've really taken his bite away.. "It is really very difficult to be a murderer without killing people from time to time, you know." Just doesn't seem right without the copious amounts of crazy flung in between genius lucidity, wit, and bravado.
I love this movie! And.. even more, I love how the characters kept their promises. <3 "No one will ever see your face.. I'll..make sure of it =( " ........ "I.. I'm your father" Erik; "*nods*.... I wonder when you would say it.. .. you see, MY eyes.. are the only part of my face .. that I can look into the mirror..without wanting to shatter it. But.. they're not HER eyes... they're yours." So touching v.v
@ilovebilliejoearm They chose to play up the human aspects of Erik's character rather than the horror cliche. There are some startling moments in the film, but it is far more tragic and emotional than scary.
@MsAnnoyingComment LOL If so, what? It's an awesome story~~~~~~~! And this one, it's.. the CUTEST, MOST.. HEART-WARMING ONE, so far. It's... truly beautyful.
Všichni mi říkají, že je lepší Erik z verze 2004. Není! Sice má Gerard Butler hezčí hlas a má víc sexy postavu, ale Charles Dance má své kouzlo a když na konci zemřel, tak jsem brečela. :(
This movie is the closest version I could find in relation to the book. The book is considered a romance/thriller NOT a horror. The phantom is more of a perfectionist/obsessive/genius NOT a murderer/insane person.
@4alexza I disagree. The phantom in the book is a total psychopath. He puts Raoul and his old friend(ish) from Persia in a legit torture chamber and threatens to blow up the whole opera house. Of course, we are supposed to feel sympathy for him too, but we're also supposed to be horrified.
@willowbreeze121 I agree. The 2004 version is definately not ranked highly in my favorites. Charles Dance's performance in the 1990 version is so beautiful...it really shows the romantic side to the phantom very well while still keeping him as the lonely, dark being that haunts the opera house. While others may not look on this version, it will always be in my top 5 favorite adaptations.
OMG! I NEVER saw this one. Oh, Charles Dance. Loved him for years. Great actor. Another smoothie. Those blue eyes & that TALL, sleek muscular build....ahhhhh.....wonderful. Every move is just so graceful. Talented actor whose career is still going strong. Ageless.
OK, everyone, this version was a 1990 miniseries starring Charles Dance as Erik/Phantom, and Teri Polo as Christine Daae. Raoul makes no appearences, and you don't get to see the freak face. There's a musical called Phantom that was based on this. Never hit Broadway due to Lloyd Webber's previous success.
@iamhappy4beinhappy While Gerard Butler is a cool actor, the 2004 film kind of misses the point that the phantom is supposed to be ugly...not attractive. Seriously, his deformity in the 2004 version is pathetic... :l
I have been looking for this version forever! The last time I saw it was in 8th grade but I couldn't remember what year it was made in or any of the actors. Does anybody know where I can find the DVD, if it's even available anywhere?
@secrets18 Yes, it is!! You can find it on eBay. They have it on a Korean online store. I ordered mine and its impecable. Only English and Korean though, but its great. I can give you the link if you're interested. Or you can browse it here on YT, the complete version is up by parts.
@SuperSmily88 I know!!!! I was crying. I mean..come on!! ='( He's all always dreamed of! And she actually, kind of.. corresponded his love. Didn't run away like a maniac at all!.... U(T////T)U WHY!!?? LMAO XD His reaction to Carlota's singing "whoa....what is that?!... maybe this is place IS haunted" "God! What are you leaving me with?!...That does it, I'm off with you" Best lines in the movie, had me cracking up all night. <3 it
Eh! This version looks chesey! The 2005 version is 1000 times better. Plus the phantom looks and sounds dorky! Don't get me wrong I love the phantom of the opera, it is my fav play, but it just made me laugh!!!
@twilightoholic30 Please don't judge until you've seen it! It is a beautiful adaptation (believe me, I've seen dozens and dozens of versions), and it definitely deserves a watch. Don't let the terrible characterizations (and singing...and acting...and cinematography...) in the 2004 version be the only adapatation of Phantom that you enjoy!
Here's a newsflash for you: The Phantom is supposed to be socially awkward because of the life he has gone through, which usually leads to "dorky behaviour" or to the fact he might sound like it.. Gerard's Phantom didn't even seem like a Phantom more than just a "sexy stalker" (I digress, I don't find him sexy, just generally handsome) half of the time. The movie gives out a very much better and believable Phantom. One is hard to raise to be normal without social contact.
I adore this Phantom of the Opera version but there is only one thing I dont understand.... 1:19 what does Erik says there ? something about light . Please if anyone would tell me I'll be really thankful ^^
I love this movie so much ..<3 Just wondering if anyone could tell me what the piano music is that starts at 0:54 ? Would really appreciate it, it sounds beautiful
By far the most moving version of The Phantom Of The Opera. It makes me wish Erik didn't die at the end of this story but won the heart of Christine and live happily ever after. Despite Erik being disfigured and having to wear a mask, I do see more of a heroic figure than a villainous one in him. I felt myself crying inside as I watched this trailer.
aawww...this looks so sad. i havem't had time to watch it i have only seen ALW musical and movie 2004. i know little of the other versions but i think i might watch this. looks like a more innocent Erik for sure. can someone tell me what this version is like please? :)
Obviously whoever made this movie never read the book. Erik is nowhere near as...personable as this. Robert Englund's characterization along with Lon Chaney is the most accurate. All other versions have just been too romantic
@boffinme80 I do accept the creative differences. What I find hard to accept is how it affects the way people perceive the character. However, no version is more accurate than Chaney
@UrukHai695 This is only different perspectives of the character. Some versions view Erik as a lonely misunderstood man who wants to be appreciated and others view him as hot-temepered and fiery so it's all different prophecy telling and it's just I wish people would stop complaining that this or any of the other ones are not accurate. It's the same story it's just viewed as different perspectives.
@UrukHai695 I would agree with you, but what eternally frustrates me about the book is that it's a story made of the sort of archetypal stuff that underlies the epic and the tragic; alas, it is written in the narrow form of the detective genre! It's like having to view the Grand Canyon through a paper tube--frustrating and unsatisfying. I cannot then blame writers for taking liberties in an effort to truly know Erik, who is only observed via hearsay and conversation in the novel.
wow...the phantom actually TALKS in this one!! hehe, hey, could anyone tell me what versions are there of phantom, I know the 2004 version, the 1990 version(now) and is there more?????
@thenana011 There's the 1925 one with Lon Chaney (excellent despite the black and white with no sound), the 1989 version with Robert Englund (slasher flick, be warned)
I love this version of the Phantom. Charles Dance portrays an amazing Phantom and Teri Polo a good Christine. The music in this one is "Phantastic" ;). This movie inspired me to learn the songs from Faust and The Daughter of the Regiment.
this is interesting. i've never even heard of this version. only the musical with Webber's music and the Robert Englund version. never this one. i'd like to watch it.
i love this dvd (or really a tv series so they called it) they depicted the phantom very closely to he book. i really dislike the horror movies they make out of this story line.
@onceinalife2010 the original book was meant to be a horror story with romantic themes, all other versions butchered it by either removing the romance or removing the horror, ive yet to see a faithful version to the novel
there's so many versions of the phantom of the opera. though i prefer the 2005 one. i like the more, suspenseful one. BUT THERE'S JUST SO MANY OF THEM!

Yes it's the same story. It's a non musical version if the original Phantom. Not phantom of the opera. Just Phantom. The original musical version of this movie is the best. The newer version was just more popular so that's what everyone knows as the story. But Phantom had better music :]
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The only PotO I recognize is Andrew Webber's version. The play is a hundred times better than the new movie, but the movie still fallows the play very closely and still has the proper music.
It looks kind of interesting but it doesn't wow me like the newer one. The music hit my heart and the songs the singing was gorgous in the new one. It was the genious Andrew Llyod Webber that wrote the new one and nothing can do better than that.
@jilnurse Thank you! But I want it with greek subtitles! A Few years ago I had recored it in VHS cassette from a greek chanel but I can't find it, I think I lost it! It 's my favourite "movie" and for my cousin too! Anyway, I hope someday, somehow I 'll have it in my hands!
I adore the Kopit/Yeston version. I've seen the Takarazuka 2004 stage production of it, and before that didn't realise that there were any different musical versions of the story, besides the Lloyd Webber version. I think I actually prefer this one even though I grew up listening to the Lloyd Webber music. Its so full of heart. Carriere and Erik's scenes make me cry so much.
UGH!!! I want to watch this version so badly....The Raoul in this movie is much more handsome than Patrick Wilson...But this movie seems so much sweeter.
This is my favorite movie ever. It is so sad in the end. I bawled my eyes out in the end. This is a very beautiful movie and I recommend it to many people.
I prefer this fan made video to the trailer that's actually on the DVD itself!. Well done. Whenever I'm in a production this Kopit/Yeston stage version, I always post a link to this trailer in e-mails to friends.
I can just recommand you this movie, it follows much more the original story then the muscial. it is a very beautiful and brilliant movie. got the DVD of it on christmas two years ago and I'm still watching it regularly.
Sorry, I have no idea where she bought it and I can't ask her anymore, I don't know where she is. By the way, I am german and I'm not sure it would help you even if I knew it.
although i will admit this version looks really good, how does this follow the original story? the only thing that seems right is the mask, Phantom's love for christine and fall of the Chandelier. she's not supposed to really go to him willingly nor is does he come to her on the stage and tell her he wants to coach her.
I like this one .he wants to like any other person.

I cannot then blame writers for taking liberties in an effort to truly know Erik, who is only observed via hearsay and conversation in the novel.

wow...the phantom actually TALKS in this one!! hehe, hey, could anyone tell me what versions are there of phantom, I know the 2004 version, the 1990 version(now) and is there more?????
thenana011 1 year ago
@thenana011 There's the 1925 one with Lon Chaney (excellent despite the black and white with no sound), the 1989 version with Robert Englund (slasher flick, be warned)
UrukHai695 1 year ago
@UrukHai695 thank you!
thenana011 1 year ago
@thenana011 There's also the 1998 version, but it's hardly like any of the others.

I kind of want to see this film (even though there's no singing involved). And yes, I do know it's based upon the book.
EmilyMikuChan 1 year ago
@EmilyMikuChan they do sing, but only when they are at the stage performing, this isn't like the 2004 a musical version, this is a mini-series.

A lovely trailer...I love this video! I watch it over and over.

I love this version of the Phantom. Charles Dance portrays an amazing Phantom and Teri Polo a good Christine. The music in this one is "Phantastic" ;). This movie inspired me to learn the songs from Faust and The Daughter of the Regiment.

i love this dvd (or really a tv series so they called it) they depicted the phantom very closely to he book. i really dislike the horror movies they make out of this story line.
onceinalife2010 1 year ago
@onceinalife2010 the original book was meant to be a horror story with romantic themes, all other versions butchered it by either removing the romance or removing the horror, ive yet to see a faithful version to the novel

Don't let the PHANTOM story or its characters be ruined by the desecration to the story within Lloyd Webber's misguided sequel, LOVE NEVER DIES, condemned by theatre critics and PHANTOM fans across the globe.

Yes it's the same story. It's a non musical version if the original Phantom. Not phantom of the opera. Just Phantom. The original musical version of this movie is the best. The newer version was just more popular so that's what everyone knows as the story. But Phantom had better music :]

Namira2991 2 years ago
wow it looks really good!
lmandlh 2 years ago
although i will admit this version looks really good, how does this follow the original story? the only thing that seems right is the mask, Phantom's love for christine and fall of the Chandelier. she's not supposed to really go to him willingly nor is does he come to her on the stage and tell her he wants to coach her.
