Sometimes, I can't understand people. Who the hell lands in the Arctic or the flaming hot desert and says to his people "OK guys, let's just settle here" ???
I live in AK, my Ex is Native, and I have alot of Native friends (very nice people )but, I am not a fan of walrus or seal, it was nice to try, but it tastes like really fishy steak.
Since more than 10,000 years, the Inuit people of Canada's eastern high arctic have considered this traditional country food to be a prized delicacy. Let's hope what you and I ate for dinner last night will be thought of in the same way in another 10,000 years.
Solutions: Tear open a bag of chips! OR.. Dial for a pizza!! hehhe
But these strong and optimistic people, in order to survive in such bad environment, they did everything they could!!! Including digging up dead walrus at RIGHT TIMING!!!
Boy, how lucky we are!!! Be grateful for what we have, dude! xD
That's incorrect. From a scientific point, absolutely nothing but working out helps you gain muscle. It might provide a large amount of protein, but you only need .8 grams per Kg a day to gain as much muscle as you want (correlating with working out)
@meffindrizzie No, its because it would be a waste of food if he were to bite a bit from a huge chunk and ends up wanting to toss it aside. I don't think the other people would want to eat from his half-bitten chunk.
@FXThug "Fried chicken? BY LORD, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?"
Seriously, it depends on how you were raised. If you were raised to think "BLUE IS EVIL! KILL IT ON SIGHT", you'd most likely think blue is evil, and you'd probably kill it on sight.
What exactly "blue" refers to, I'm not too sure of, but that isn't the point. Point being, don't knock what you ain't tried.
Fermentation would be a better word than decompose. Walrus meat sometimes contains trichnosis. I knew someone who ate raw walrus by accident and suffered their life from a disfiguring and painful, slow muscle degeration. One consolation - you ate that with real eskimos who know they are doing. That fermentation and long freeze probably killed the trichnosis. Aarigaa aiviQ nakuupalluktuq! AiviQtullatuurunga! Cool vid.
@NorthernMostTours wow I didn't know that. although its still confusing...why didn't they just cook the meat to kill all this bacteria and disease? I don't understand how eating it decomposed will help at all? in fact if we eat anything decomposing that would probably kill us? strange.
@jualkyn Traditionally our diet has paralleled our fuel sources - what could be eaten raw or fermented was - I have always known to boil the walrus after it has been fermented, perhaps then refrozen. Because of the lack of trees, and the use of marine mammal blubber oil as a/the main source of heat and light - there was not always the luxury of cooking all the time...
@jualkyn This might be a better explanation - for thousands of years Inuit have survived in the Arctic with an almost pure meat diet - approximately 99% (my estimate) of our diet traditionally was meat - with roots and berries to supplement. Over millenia our digestive systems have adapted to this almost pure meat diet and allows us to digest proteins that may be too much for other cultures - not that we wouldn't get sick or poisoned from truly rotten meat.
@NorthernMostTours ah that is really interesting that human evolution can happen that way although i still do slightly question it because in the end inuit are still human beings and we physically cannot survive from a pure meat diet. somehow vitamin c and other nutrients would be needed. I heard that the huns tribe were similar and to make up to prevent scurvy, they drank alot of mare's milk or something of the sort which contains more nutrients than a cow's.
@NorthernMostTours which brings me to ask, has there ever been a reported case of inuit people suffering from scurvy or malnutrition of any sorts? scurvy I imagine would have come up at least once from such a heavy meat diet. And I think i understand now since it all depends on how things "ferment/decompose". If you just take milk out of the fridge and let it sit outside and you drink it after it goes bad you'll be severely sick. Cheese though comes from old milk but still made differently.
@jualkyn A pure meat diet doesnt meant that vitamins and minerals are absent - Marine Mammal blubber serves in replacement of fruits and vegetables - it contains the vits and minerals needed to survive - when shipwrecked sailors in Barrow in the early 1900s got scurvy because they would eat only fish and caribou - our elders knew to give them blubber and they quickly recovered because blubber is truly a SUPERFOOD! We have a rich ecosystem here - harsh, but rich.
@jualkyn There is a science to meat handling in the arctic - defined in tradition and experience - at the store if i bought yogurt - i could make a video called "eating decomposing cow juices" - which would be true - but just as there is a science behind making yogurt, again there is a method to meat handling. Just as cheese, wine and fine steaks are aged or fermented, so are some of our meats. Again I think a better word would be fermented - but that is not as attention grabbing as decompose.
Different local dishes become known around the world. We Polish taught Western Europeans eat fermented cucumbers, sour cabbage and beetrots in all forms :D It can be surprising for them when somebody who has never eaten beetrots eats a lot, because well... poo is red :D
Pierogi are also fairly known now :) I've never seen Polish soups become popular however, and that's a shame, because krupnik or ogorkowa are very tasty and healthy :)
he says "very strong" but im sure he means "disgusting." that would obviously be rude and ignorant given the circumstances. nice display of respect and culture.
@FAMINE2005 By "very strong," I think he meant that his stomach isn't used to digesting that type of meat. On the other hand, you interpreting it as "disgusting" is the opposite of what you're preaching.
@yawenalice i see what your saying, but my point is that he has enough social etiquette to understand that any rude comment would be accentuated by the circumstances. so, like him, even if I found the food disgusting, would refrain from saying anything to make me look like an idiot. so i am making an assumption which is never good to do, but its at least an educated one. lol.
